I played lost alpha for the first game and that was fun just freeplaying but I think the 3rd games mods are better than that.
not sure what the best one is the ones that use call of chynoble as the base mod are the best ones some one on twitch was playing apocalypse mod or some thing the other day.
just play what ever is considerd the best CoC mod of the mod. and wait till some one makes openworld multiplayer work

Clear Sky is objectively better than SoC. Only retards think otherwise.
Weapon upgrades, faction, territory control, better exploration and undegrounds, better side missions and optional content.
If you disagree you're probably some shitter than reads reviewers say like IGN or PC Gamer.

Possibly, however, SoC and CoP have far FAR superior modding community behind them.
And then if you're done with the vanilla story, play Anomaly which has all the maps from the 3 games, a 64-bit engine, and a fuckton of mods on it for maximum stalking.

seeing every enemy patch on the pda map was a huge decrease in tension walking through the zone and the latter half of the game where all you do is shoot monoliths by the truckload with even a helicopter boss. no way is it anything but the worst of the trilogy

Yes,some of the newest features like disguises were a bit rushed but you can still disable them,a new version is coming out SOON.

It's very playable. Performance is excellent, and the only crashes I get are the odd no error loading CTDs between maps, and those are basically once every eight hours. Stuttering is nearly non-existent in Anomaly, outside of when you first transition into a map. I've been having a blast playing it recently.
