Crossbell is the RE4 of Trails. It's potentially the best in the series, but it's also where everything started going wrong.

I have no idea how anyone can be optimistic about the series after the trainwreck that was Sen. Everything unique and interesting about the series more or less was run into the ground by Sen and instead traded for a shitty harem protagonist literal gundam pilot katana wielding self insert. How can you take any of the world building seriously anymore after Sen, they took this vibrant fantasy world and basically made it into "not Japan" with a few European buildings thrown in. The world completely lacks any verisimilitude now, and you really can't get that back after you destroy it.

Yeah, didn't they actually start to back off on the harem and then the Japs pitched a fit and they reversed course? Which is why none of the females could build up their own stories or relationships, everything had to be centered around Rean. Only Millium managed to escape, and surprise surprise, her relationship with Jusis was one of the few highlights of the Sen series. All the other girls just got caught in the black hole that is Rean. It also really is shit going forward because none of the girls can have a canonical relationship with Rean so they have to dance around that if they ever use any of those characters again, further handicapping their ability to tell a good story.

They need to go for the nuclear option and confirm Laura as the canon romance.

Yeah, Persona is a harem game done right. It's pretty pathetic that Falcom tried to copy Persona without understanding why it works and how it works, but all they seem to grasp is that it's popular to be able to romance every girl, so they'll throw their storytellling and characterization under that bus in a heartbeat. The entire world, plot, and every supporting character revolve completely around Rean. Every single girl is madly in love with him including his little sister, the Princess of the Erebonian Empire, and his super elite incredibly talented teacher, as well as every single female classmate, and later student, he has. Fie being super popular was one of the big reasons they backed off on moving towards a canon choice, though. All the Japs got angry they couldn't romance Fie anymore and so they just said fuck it and went back to a full harem.

Laura, Altina, or Alisa could've all worked, they had genuine chemistry with Rean and it actually made sense in the story for them to become romantically involved. If Falcom had committed to one of them and actually fleshed out the other characters relationships, personalities and goals outside of Rean, Sen could've still been a good series, but instead it's easily the worst of the entire Kiseki franchise.

Another thing about Sen that's really fucking annoying is that the writers decided that, despite the setting being a massive war, virtually no one dies and everyone that did die, gets resurrected because fuck having consequences or real impact in your story, right? It makes Crow and Milllium's deaths pointless and nonsensical. It's one of the worst things about Sen, if the writers couldn't or didn't want to write a war story with all the implications and consequences, why make that the setting? After what I saw in Sen I can only conclude that their reasoning was that it would make Rean look cooler if he was a war hero, because every story decision they make is based around his character.

Was there a single female outside of Millium (who you could still somewhat romance anyway) that wasn't after Rean? A sad corpse of a series with even a more tragic fanbase, who cling to it either because they think niche is cool and because they spend years learning japanese just to play a literal fan fiction of a retard who played Suikoden and Xenogears and thought that a long lasting series in the same universe would be good, with political themes as understood by a 11 year old and mechas. Literally everything that Kekseki ever did has done by literally any other jrpg series, but better and ten years before. Moragh would also be a romance option. She would not be allowed to interact with Zeke at all, thus cutting out plenty of fun and hilarious moments between the two.
Brighid would also be a romance option. Her relationship with Moragh would be heavily downplayed.
Poppi would be a romance option. She probably would never have been made by Tora and just been some robot you picked up off the ground.

Basically, by making haremshit a thing, you agree to fuck over your characters, which thankfully Xenoblade 2 avoids.
