Burger here. I had kidney stones as well. Had hyperparathyroidism. Had to get a pretty minor surgery to get rid of the adenoma. Towards the end of all the testing and shit my insurance lapsed (i was in uni). Luckily everything was already scheduled so i still got the surgery. Didnt take more than 20 minutes in surgery, although i did have to stay overnight. Just for that and I owed over 50k in medical bills.

The thing that kicked it off was because as countries began to consider the question of it, in the US, employers were offering health benefits as a manner of attracting new employees, because those health benefits had non-taxable value. Fixing the healthcare system might actually save the US trillions over the long run, but that would also demolish the stock values of the healthcare companies, which would cost our politicians both their campaign money and their personal wealth.

One of my friends has literally called, said he couldn't afford to pay, and they told him it wasn't a problem and waived the fee. I believe public hospitals are also legally required to provide some form of charity care as well.
