Why does almost every Japanese game do this? It's incredibly aggravating and makes the act of experiencing the story in these games a literal chore. By contrast, virtually no Western game suffers from this issue because they have text appear instantly on the screen.

The most perplexing thing is that this shitty phenomenon is making a return, specifically in indie games that are derivative of Japanese games (e.g. Undertale). Why on earth would you copy such a horrible 'feature'?
