Because a watered down DF is something anyone can get into, where as the real deal is a max autism simulator that most people can't or won't bother with. You can say the obtuse nature of the game is overhyped and you'd be right to some extent, but it's still above the level of your average game consumer, and the reputation scares people off to boot.

I live in a country where health is 100% free, but shit is fucking broken. People want to abuse the shit out of the system (ie. claiming medication and then selling it off elsewhere), hospitals are always crowded, staff is underpaid on top of being understaffed, it takes 3 months for you to get an appointment with a general physician. I think good healthcare us the one where you pay a small fee monthly and it covers x% of total medical costs while you still have to pay for the rest.

I dunno if I'm autistic, but to me ASCII allows for way more room for imagination.
With a tileset you get a certain style and the game essentially tells you what your world looks like.
With ASCII the world is more malleable in your head and allows for a more unique experience every time.

Basically teamed up with a group for an "official" tileset and will plop it up on Steam with it, new music, and workshop support.
Update will still be posted on Bay12games as a "classic" edition with the ASCII default.

Basically nothing really changes, just a new way to get the game if you want a all-in-one package without having to do the work of installing the tile set, changing the music, and adding in mods yourself.

Free. But the modsupport and graphics mod is paid.

It is, but dialed to 11. Dwarves will grumble if they eat without a table. They'll grumble if they're left out in the rain. They'll grumble that they were accosted by pests. They won't spiral unless someone they love dies.
In Rimworld, missing a table can be just as bad as killing their parents. DF is more of a management sim where your CPU lmiits how many individuals are working for you, while RW is more of a babysitting sim, where individualities limit the number of assholes you're caring for. They also eat like bastards, so you immediately have to trim the fat, getting rid of anyone that's not pulling their weight. There's no rush to get rid of soap makers in DF, in fact, next season, you might just build a soap shop.

The default tileset bothers me purely because it isn't square, it's rectangular. I remember getting nauseous staring at it for a long time until I just got a tileset thats "ASCII but square" and feeling a lot better.

Prior to the one pictured, the available tilesets were all fucking awful, and tended to attract people who preferred Grafix to readability or clear information. The type of person who actually wants realistic arm hair and heat lensing.
Since the tileset was much, much worse at being a functional way of getting information to the player, that meant it was unpopular with people that wanted that information - people who played the game as a game.
People using the tilesets were huge fuckin casuals who preferred constant eyestrain to learning the alphabet.
This new tileset though ... seems good. So it might be different.

The problem it's possible some game mechanics won't be available.
With no simulated history, your dwarves will only make references to things that happened in the fort itself (no masterwork engraving of an epic duel that happened 100 years ago).
With a 1x1 embark tile it's possible to "miss" the adamantine spire, which I believe are arranged in a checkerboard.
With a low population cap, you won't get sieges and you can't become a barony/county/dukedom/mountain home.

Let's assume that, due to DF's lack of a clearly defined goal or restriction, that most of the fun of the game comes from defining your own goals and restrictions.
Multiple people working together can think of more of these than others.
Moreover, while there's obviously joy in achieving something just to see if it can be done, there's also joy in sharing that accomplishment with others.
Either to get their input on how to optimise it even further, or to inspire them to try something similar, or perhaps just to share a mutual love of overcomplicated plans working.
I get a good deal of joy from these.
But there is a problem: They require interaction with another dwarf fortress player.
Other dwarf fortress players get harder to find amongst a sea of casuals.
On Yea Forums? Tons of people with shitty tilesets posting their failed abortions with the least efficient bedrooms I have ever seen.
Bay12? Don't make me laugh, Bay12 is a joke.
Try to do something valid in these places and it is an uphill struggle against neurotypical faggots who think that it's "fun" to be incompetent.
Moreover, even if it doesn't affect me, there ARE plenty of people who will have their playstyle swayed by the sea of casuals. That is a terrible tragedy and it's a shame to lose someone to "storytelling".

This never existed and will never work in Dwarf Fortress, because blood is an entity, not a fluid like water or magma, you just CAN'T HARVEST blood.
The biggest problem with Dwarf Fortress it's because it's filled with epic stories that never happened or they are just stories told in a autistic manner (adding features that never happened so the story can look more cool)

The game basically consist of digging, hauling and crafting a lot of stuff that your dwarves will never use and are just used for trading. Sometimes this game can be very tedius and annoying, you can lose a 5 hours of fort progress to a single Werebest because the IA is a big mess. Your dwarves don't have any sense of danger, they will literally grab a log of wood in the middle of a goblin siege if you don't micro-manage a lot of stuff just to get that dwarf to safety.

Stuff like this is doesn't give any "gameplay" value, it's just a wall of text. In fact, the only thing that you need to know about a dwarf """""""""personality""""""" is if he can handle stress or not. Awesome, one of the two biggest gripes for me from DF was the confusing graphics. Even with a decent tileset it was a bit...ugly. Or i dont have a vivid enough imagination to pretend that "c" moving around the screen is actually a 4 legged cat.
Now if i can rebind my keys or use a mouse as well it'd be perfect. And maybe if adventure mode was fleshed out more. Excited to see what they do.

The default ascii graphics suck, but user-created ascii graphics are actually far better than graphics sets. The game's just not built in such a way that you can get good graphics which are also easy to make sense of.

Considering how long it has been out that's actually pretty fair. Similar thing with Cave Story, La-Mulana, and Treasure Adventure Game. The free versions are still floating on the net but the paid versions get additional stuff or bumped up graphics.

Then there's stuff like Battle for Wesnoth and Toribash that got Steam-based download pages rather than going paid on Steam. ... Now that I think about it I wonder if anyone still plays Toribash actually. It has been quite a while.
