Classic will get a portion of the people currently giving up on BFA, but you're crazy thinking Shadowbringers will bomb because a fifteen year old game is getting ressurrected. FFXIV is still a little niche being a story oriented, Japanese (J)RPG style of MMO, and a numbered Final Fantasy title to boot. This holds it back from becoming the kind of huge MMO WoW was, but also has helped keep it at a relatively stable and separate subscriber base all these years.

Also many of the people making noise about Vanilla were playing it on private servers years ago, and they are an extremely difficult crowd to please who would jump ship from one private server to the next. If Blizz Classic isn't everything they hoped for they won't be around long.

I haven't been following it lately but from what I can tell Blizard is extremely tight lipped about how they are going to impliment it. It's just a very difficult thing to do. What patch version will it release on? Will it have staggered content releases or just throw it all out there day one? And once it has run for a year or two, you can bet your ass people will start calling for Burning Crusade.

Some of these questions might have been answered already but my guess is they are going to go with the 'safest' option or just create a massive headache for themelves down the road, and will end up alienating some people either way.

The game is made to make catching up to current content extremely easy. The only thing is that you have 100+ hours of story content to get through first, so if you're fine with that then jump right in.

Relative to WoW itself you are new. You can’t really be fooling yourself and think that a reboot created by a Director who adores WoW didn’t use modern WoW as a basis.
