On a more serious note, I hurt my wrist somehow and I can’t play any video games. At least I got halfway through SoS, but I’m hoping to be back in action by the end of the week. It’s killing me.

No one cares about Sparda or Mundus. Over explaining it means they'll rob it of its mystique as well.
He has no enemies he has personal regions to fight anymore and he's sealed in Hell with his brother.

He beat him when he was 20 years old and he's crushed Urizen, who was far stronger than Mundus, and absorbed the Sparda. Nobody cares about Mundus anymore and even in Before the Nightmare, they make it a point to say that while he's around he's a shadow of his former self and Urizen replaced him easily.
Vergil as the Demon King was always the most obvious desperation option but they've bungled it so Vergil, while killing thousands in DMC3, as Urizen and later while he sits on the Tree and watches it eat people en masse, isn't redeemed (because he never actually thinks he did anything wrong and still acts selfishly) but the plot stops treating him as a villain (Nero wants to save him, Dante just wants fun).
They also removed a lot of the qualities that made Vergil fun by turning him from a cold,clinical and focused villain who had goals outside of Dante to a hotblooded whiny retard who squeals "DON'T SAY IT" and did all of his scheming as Urizen and V for no fucking reason besides 'muh revenge on Dante'
