You end up spending hours upon hours altering the game and barely playing it. The best way is to add a handful of mods to fix whatever you consider the most egregious of issues, then just getting on with playing.

There's no catch all mod handling program for TES. There's isn't even a catch all program for creating merge patches. The program that probably matters the least in this mess is the one in charge of copying the mod files to the game directory. You can use old "defunct" shit. It works fine. Shit, you can just windows explorer if you want.
