To conclude a game has flopped or been a success, you first have to take in account how much it cost to make. You can't just take a random succesful game and measure every other title against the first game's selling numbers. And DMC isn't particularly an expensive AAA franchise.

They have no interest in PAYING money for Nomura's next games. i dont know off hand but if you look at lifetime sales it's guaranteed to be comparatively low to other titles with the same total sales.
dmc 5 just doesn't have the luxary of being a currently popular franchise or have a gameplay style thats similar to something that is popular.
the game is good enough to be a sleeper hit and it will be. dmc 6 week 1 will be much better.
