Reality is though, that when Steam came out, pc gaming was on its deathbed man. It was ultimately a reasonable compromise at the time between gamers and developers.
I'm not blaming piracy either, because developers were the ones going apeshit with ridiculously intrusive DRM back then. No one wanted to buy that shit and then get fucked over because the DRM was forcing limited installs or all manner of other bs.
Steam was a compromise with its ability to download a game, and then go into offline mode. Also, steam cracks were as common as no DVD cracks back then so Noone really cared, knowing they could just download the game and crack it so you didn't need steam.
These days however, it's big business again to be on pc and now the vultures are circling, companies like EA, Activision-Blizzard, Epic, Microsoft, etc are all seeing the potential revenue in making their shoddy launcher the next big pc digital market.
That's the attitude of a lot of people who "support" steam anyway. We don't like it, but it's generally a fair compromise and we don't trust the other companies to not act like total ass fuckers if they ever gained market dominance. Just look at how epic is acting, they're pushing console tier strategies into the pc market, and this is just the opening salvos. This is definitely going to get worse, and pc gaming and the customers will inevitably be the ones hurt the most if this continues.
I'll go back to pirating before I fucking install another launcher. Steam was the only compromise I was okay with.

When Steam came around I hated the idea of digital games, I bought my copy of Half-Life 2 at PC World so I could feel like I actually "owned" my copy, but in the end digital distribution is just too convenient to push back against. Almost all my PC games are on Steam and I've really got no interest in adopting new stores.
