But it doesn't function like in that movie
In what way? You get dumped on an island and have to scavenge for weaponry and supplies. You then fight until one remains.
Battle Royale games are okay as a concept, I just think that not only the genre is getting saturated, it's being pushed to games that don't work well with BR modes.

No because that didn't happen.
Yeah, because every single one so far has been shit.
It's still a great concept, hopefully someone will get the implementation down right before everyone is fucking tired of it.
In the movie it's not just fighting. They make and break alliances (with the enemy, not a predetermined team) and set up traps.

Pre-2017 Yea Forums had battle Royale threads on a near daily basis.
That's stripping down the genre to its base values. Something like early DayZ would be more like the BR portrayals in books/movies.
Part of what made BR great was the narrative of it taking place in this dystopian world.
A multiplayer game cannot present a narrative even close to that. It should have been a singleplayer game where you can choose who you want to ally with and the story branches out into the appropriate branch or path
