Honestly that take isn't even that accurate. The problem is it was clusterfuck from day 1. I think I figured it out too, it pretty much all comes back to Quinn in the end. Because of the way the drama unfolded everyone forgets that the initial 2 weeks of drama (before it was even named gamergate) were inexplicable and bizarre. People were getting hacked and doxxed but in really suspicious ways that reeked of them doing it to themselves (or alternatively being framed as doing to themselves,) all discussion was getting deleted and locked all over the internet, sites would report on the controversy and get taken down hours later and excluded from wayback machine archives, sites would get ddosed and no one could decide whether it was the sjws or game journalists that they were mad about. And shit Nathan Grayson never reviewed Depression Quest, but Zoe's ex-boyfriend never said he did, and neither did anyone who actually read his autistic break-up sperg-out: they accused Zoe Quinn for sucking dick for coverage (which... might have been true but I honestly can't tell anymore) but as the controversy went on this weird line about Zoe Quinn sleeping with game journos for good reviews kept popping up even though that wasn't even what the whole scandal was about.

According to gg all the game journos were supposedly in some massive conspiracy to cover up the whole Zoe Quinn scandal. Some thought it was because she was connected to all these journos and writing about this scandal would cause the site to loose credibility, some thought it was because she was a woman being accused by a man of emotional abuse. But reading through GJP it's clear that all these journalists are actually shit at their jobs and have no idea what they were doing (at least imo)

Yes but reading those leaks the problem I had was it seemed the game journos in question had no idea that what they were doing was wrong (like donating to Zoe Quinn's patreon or the hypocrisy of them covering the Max Tempkin rape allegations and not the Quinn ones.) Plus it was also clear that what they thought people were upset about was the 'she had sex for a good review' claim, even though that wasn't what anyone had initially said and that people were upset about a whole host of other allegations against Quinn (most of which were actually true - although the sex for press allegation, different from the sex for reviews allegation, is still a grey area.)

Really it just proved to me that the staff of Kotaku are a bunch of fucking retards, which, like... y'know no shit. Did anyone see the time Totillo tried to play the original Doom? The take-away I had was that while they were breaking loads of the rules of journalistic conduct they were so fucking shit at their jobs that they didn't even know it was a problem.

Besides I think Vice, of all places, summed up the problem with gg really well. Progressive blogs wrote articles condemning gamergate essentially because people in gamergate were sure to click on them (and these sites all worked on a clicks for ad-revenue model) and get long spergy comments debunking them (engagement with the content) and then link it to whatever subreddit or weird cripplechan board causing it to get more clicks. Sure gg tried to archive everything, which was supposed to prevent click views, but some people just had to comment on the article or ended up reading it without the archive.

Basically gamergate's supposed enemies made a lot of money by loudly dissing gamergate. Yeah, gg also targeted advertisers of gamasutra and gawker which did have an effect particularly on the latter. But all these other shitty news blogs weren't targeted and shit did they make some good money off the outrage.

The only problem with the whole 'gamers are dead' thing being a conspiracy is that there's no evidence of it being a conspiracy (there's no mention of it in any of the leaks). It looked like one, don't get me wrong, but there is another possibility. Leigh Alexander had written the similar thinkpieces saying basically the same thing about 3 times beforehand (each one getting more and more exasperatedly condescending, peaking with the infamous one) so it's clear she was always going to write something like that. But all the other articles that quickly followed can be explained in a different way than collusion.

Maybe all these other sites saw the amount of traffic gamasutra was getting from Leigh's piece (remember a hate-click is still a click,) the glut of comments and engagement the piece was receiving (even if all those comments were line-by-line rebutals of the piece) and the sheer virality of 'Gamers are over they don't have to be your audience any more. Maybe, just maybe, the editors of these sites got their writers to quickly shit out their own take on this article to quickly grab a slice of this outrage pie. I mean, none of them liked gamergate and they all believed Quinn's version of events so that helped. But maybe it was just a quick trend to make a quick buck.

Of course the problem is that it undoubtedly looked like a conspiracy from the outside. 14 different competing blogs all running the same piece on the same day? Fuck me. I'm not saying I'm right about this either - but there is the possibility that this was just the business of clickbait reaching its hideous logical conclusion.

It's very simple. Someone slept with someone else and it got out so everyone got excited that they had the smoking gun to say fuck journos (and fuck jannies when the threads were getting banned and even moot had to comment on it lmao). It started gaining traction so a slew of "gamers are dead" articles came out to say "nah fuck you losers" all those websites a parasites and feed off eachother anyway so not really that shocking that a bunch of similar headlines popped up. Someone had the absolutely genius idea of writing to the advertisers on those sites to complain about the articles and it actually worked. Lazy clickbait sites chucked a fit. Anything after that is just messy whatever that no one cares about. I actually miss the beginning of GG it was like a mini revival of old chan culture with everyone actually being excited and having fun together for once rather than being bitter in a race to see who cares the least about anything to seem cool.
