Halo literally started the trends of fps campaigns being cinematic, with cutscenes and with A.I.-controlled buddies at your side and regenerating health/shields as a get out of jail free cards.

FPS prior to that were more akin to dungeon crawlers, with minimal story and an emphasis on traversing a dangerous environment by yourself.

Because it brought competitive FPS to the consoles for the first time and introduced a fun soft-arena shooter to console plebs. I was 13 when Halo 2 came out. In 2004 it was a lot harder for a kid to have access to a PC that could play many games properly, but it was easy for my parents to get me an xbox for 200 bucks. So I spent most of my 8th grade playing halo 2, and when we got DSL I got my parents to pay for xbox live and it was the first time I properly experienced online gaming. That's why it's remembered fondly by many. It's also just a good game with good design and plain old fun.

You were 16 when halo 2 came out, and maybe had a job already and made money, and you bought a PC, and were playing quake, I can see why halo never interested you.

The original Halo General was there from the very beginning and Halo was accepted, if fringe, game since the Reach days. That's almost ten years ago. Halo 3 is twelve years old.
