it's still pretty good if you ask me, it's not hard to knock it out in an afternoon and enjoy yourself the whole way through
the camera is probably the main thing that puts people off
it's kino
youtube.com
Still my favorite Devil May Cry. The sequels never really captured the same magic for me.
I just bought the bd collection and I’ve been playing through 1 for the first time, it feels a bit dated but it’s still fun.
But the fucking camera is absolute aids and makes me want to kill myself
I love it but could be nostalgia. I got it when it came out and I was 8 years old.
poorly if you're looking for the gameplay from 3 onwards
otherwise it's got all the cool dark/high gothic of 3 & 4 mixed with a banging ost
Still a good game as long as youre okay with the lack of combos.
I just got it on PS4 and started playing it (never played a DMC game), it’s not just nostalgia the game is pretty damn fun except for the camera
This, the music is fucking amazing
The setting of the first one is unbeatable. This is the only game in the series that actually feels scary, which is great contrasted against Dantes personality.
I'm not talking about cycling through a movelist on a target here here, but the general grounded swordplay feels best in this entry especially when you take into account the swordcancelling.
Deserves more recognition
I played DMC4 first so I don't really like it
My wife played DMC3 first and she doesn't really care for 1 either
Then you should’ve played 1 first
I grew up with 1 but have little desire to go back now that I have 3, 4 and 5
I did replay it last year in the lead up to E3 but it was mostly for novelty
3 and 4 I replay every year and 5 will probably be added to that list
>time to go to work, guys
appreciate it. The series only goes downhill from here, and I really mean it.
I think it's a PRETTY GOOD GAAAAAAAAME
I played 1 at release, and still play it today. I followed the series, but it didn't go the direction I wanted thematically or mechanically.
highly primitive in multiple respects
worth watching a mission or two, but it borders on unplayability with its offensive retro-ness; even DMC3 is starting to feel dated
Just finished my first playthrough the other day
It was pretty good
the shmup phase of the Mundus fight is pretty gay though
It rocked, pity you can only see it in a museum nowadays
I really want to go through the series, so I played DMC for the first time a bit ago, but I wasn't really blown away. I still liked it overall, althought I wasn't too fond of the whole leftover RE feel. The highlights for me were definetly the Nelo Angelo and Nightmare fights. As I understand, DMC2 is supposed be shit. Does the series really kick off at 3 and 4? I still have hopes I'll be able to get into it.
the series peaked at 1 in everything except gameplay.
Same guy who is afraid of new things
DMC3 tries to emulate a little of the RE feel from the first game, but it just comes out as something diffrent.
Gameplay wise, yeah it peaked in 3 and it kept building on it in 4 and 5, story is alot better in 3 too
How do you kill the fire crab?
I don't like the control layout for the PS2 version but the HD version is kino. Played it for the first time last year and it's probably my second favourite action game after Bayonetta.
3 has the perfect story for an action game.
nah Itsuno is just a talentless hack who turns anything he touches to shit.
This is one of the few vidya tracks that always gets me pumped up no matter what.
Not as big of a hack as kojima
it's better than the rest of the series put together simply because of drew coombs audibly trying not to laugh while delivering this line youtube.com
Newfag to dmc here, is there any reason to play the original games over their hd collection/port counterparts
no
Phantom? His weak point is the top of his butt. Jump towards his back, enemy step off it and then come down with a DT'd helm breaker. Double jumped helm breakers do way more damage, even more with DT obv. Stinger his face when he thinks he's gonna shoot a fireball or summon his lava pillars like a bitch.
I agree, only the first two MGS games are good. The rest is trash.
>other thing is worse
Not him and I like itsuno's work but this argument is always retarded
>Double jumped helm breakers do way more damage
what the fuck, this makes perfect sense but I had no idea that was a thing
Weird, I played 3 first and thought it was fine
Not really, the HD collection is fine but it has some sound and graphical problems is all
The PS2 versions are pretty solid on the other hand and have no issue afaik
Nobody cares
Makes easy work of all the ghosts too, makes the death scythe your complete bitch. Just get under them, jump up then off their faces. ezpz
THE SKY IS FAIR
I wasn’t really trying to make an arguement as much as I was sharing my opinion on Japanese devs
Absolutely not
OG DMC1 didn't even have proper subtitles until the most recent version of the HD collection
Plus OG US DMC3 starts on the first unlockable harder difficulty for no reason
I absolutely loved the light horror element DMC 1 had, you can definitely tell it was meant to be a Resident Evil game.
Except the jump button is circle
Don't forget that Air Raid is free damage if you feel unsafe
Is there anywhere I can practice this shit because he's the first real tough guy I've come across and he's wrecking my shit every time.
WOOOHOOOOHOOOO THATS TOTALLY CUHRAYZEE MAN
>*flips pizza and does three backflips*
I remember triangle being jump and circle being melee
Understood, have a nice day
How do I beat Nightmare on DMD? reeeeeee
>3 shadows secret mission PTSD comes back
youtube.com
>His parents got him M games
Lucky
Pray
>Itsuno is just a talentless hack
He's not though, and I'm not dick riding or anything, the man knows how to make a game it's just that his less familiar with horror-esque games because he never had a history with them and more history with fighting games
You fight him a few times, which fight are you on?
The first one.
The progenitor of a new style of action game, however its roots are heavily mired in the fact that it was originally a resident evil game.
i dont know why you can find that mission so early other than to mess with you
only good game in the series
that's okay I just dislike his entries in the series, because personally I think he steered it in a completely wrong direction.
Just save before mission 3. Fight until you run out of yellow orbs and load if you have to I guess.
And while we're at it, vortex is all i-frames during it's use making you effectively invincible. DT abilities were so strong.
I am a DMC newfag who just started playing 1hd, I beat phantom last night, make sure you focus his face or his butt because those are the only parts that do damage wheb you hit them, roll around a lot and jump to avoid his lasers and shit and go for his face whenever you can
Best atmosphere in the series by far
And Ifrit is the best weapon
I like how it has a tower that you explore, and doesn't feel like youre just going from random room to random room killing hordes of enemies.
It was only a 15 in the UK
WHOS GOT THE HERB WHEN IM DRY
I WANNA GET SO HIGH

IM A FEIND FOR THE GREEN STICKY LEAVES
WHOS GOT THE CHRONIC THAT I LIKE
RIGHT BETWEEN THE LOWS AND THE HIGHS

THE RIGHT STATE OF MIND
I wouldn't mind another horror-esque DMC. Another thing I love about this game is how dante was introduced. This fucking lady crashes into his office with a motorcycle and all he can say is "woah slow down babe".
haven't played v yet, but compared to 3/4 it holds up pretty well. better level design, better enemy design, better atmosphere, enemies are more aggressive and won't just stand there waiting for you to juggle them. bosses are harder to compare, i think they're fairly consistent in 1, more of a mixed bag later on. some are better than dmc1's bosses, some worse, et cetera
overall i think dmc1 is more challenging and consistent. if you just want to easily juggle enemies with endless combos the game is not for you
IMO it's its own thing. IMO Dante feels like he has a lot more weight in DMC1, which I kinda like.
How would've like it than? Kamiya seems happy with how it is, and has played them and even incorporated ideas from it into his games
And Itsuno seems to have tried to do what DMC1 had with the horror gothic feel in 3
Not gonna lie, I tear up everytime Dante & Trish reuinite and hug all akwardlike. There's real sincerity found here. The cutscenes are unbelievably stiff today, but there's a easily a budgeted charm to that now.
2nd best DMC because it has actual level design

Backpedal and fire the pistols at him, and stinger him after he attacks. Try to stinger him when he charges up a fireball. When he stops glowing orange, you can get some safe attacks in on his head.
How hard is DMD? Is beating it enough to be considered truly gud at the game?
Being truly gud is joch1 level. DMD New Game.
What does this have to do with DMC.....?
It's mostly the music that carries it.
youtube.com
I just don't like them.
Reuben made Dante too campy for me, and all the tack-on characters are pure anime
But I like anime, I watch it every day :(
Which should've translated better to the actual DMC anime but I also like the portrayal of depressed dante
youtube.com
based
he was really campy even in dmc1 though
I’m a DMC newfag and didn’t even know there was an anime, the intro is pretty kino
despite being a little bit dated it will always be my fave because of the resident evil influence on the etting and atmosphere, none of the other games have the same level of detail regarding the environments and shit and none of them hae that spooky vibe
yeah but not in-your-face-look-at-how-wacky-this-is
he was walking a fine line between chad and cringe, that's what I liked about him.
The new Dante does flips above the blade from below the both sides chasm
Proof of his camp
youtube.com
It's a decent anime on it's own, although Dante doesn't go too crazy and the Devil Trigger in the final battle is off screen.
Watch it subbed if you get around to it, not in english out of any kind of VA loyalty bullshit. Reuben is out of his element here.
that's my point, it's as if Itsuno based his whole persona around this one sequence, and ramped the childishness up to 11
Honestly my main issue is the lack of mission/difficulty selection. I'd enjoy the game a million times more if I could just choose which mission I wanted to play.
You can tell this poster has shit taste.
It really gets good in DMC3.
I did the same as you.
I started DMC and beat normal mode DMC 1,3,4 and 5 and I went back to play DMC3 before really getting into the nitty gritty of 5, because it was just that good and I wanted to give it the attebtion it deserves.
Dante and Vergil's rivalry was absolute kino.
On the otherhand the camera of DMC1 just made me want to kill myself at times.
Dante's not doing any overdone acrobatic feats here.
I just started playing 1 as my first DMC game, would you say two was 100% worth skipping?
dmc2 is an abortion
Yes. Watching the cutscenes on youtube isn't even worth it either. The game's badly designed and equally bland. But by all means, go see for yourself if you must.
It's still pretty campy with how laid back he is about the whole situation.
The only worthwhile thing in that game is laughing at how bad it is and the line about the king and his crown.
I still like it for its horror-like setting and weapon loadout. The latter may not have a whole lot to choose from, but the mastery of the weapons and guns available feels great without being too overwhelming. I often forget all the tools and moves I have available in later games so I usually end up in a rut of the same few combos or mashing like madman. There’s a simple stylish feeling to the first DMC I don’t get from later games that incorporate so many new things which compels me to learn them all to really style on enemies.
It’s probably my own fault for stretching myself too thin amongst all the weapons and mechanics rather than learning and mastering just a few to start. Still, the lower skill ceiling of DMC1 works for me and set a great precedent for future titles without feeling too easy since Style disappears fast and enemies can be pretty tough.
How is that camp in any way? He takes a sword to the chest and calmly shoots a motorcycle out of the air. He doesn't show off or exaggerate once.
Is it really worth getting back into? I got it in the HD collection, and after getting my ass kicked by that first spider boss I kind of figured out I should move on to 3 which felt much more forgiving.
the HD editions have some visual glitches, but I think they are still the best way to play them today
You got casual filtered BOY
I took the advice and skipped it and to be honest I was already really close to dropping DMC1 halfwaythrough to get to 3, because I could barely stand DMC1's camera.
DMC3 is 10/10 though.
One of the best rivalries in vidya and conbat is really good
1 is still my favorite. The sequels (besides 2) are all great but I prefer 1's combination of action and adventure rather than the just straight-up action of 3, 4 and 5. Same reason I like Ninja Gaiden Black over NG2 and even Sigma 1.
so thanks for confirming every DMC1 boomer is a mega hipster with no real reason for hating the other games other than to be a special snowflake
have a good day
>after getting my ass kicked by that first spider boss I kind of figured out I should move on to 3 which felt much more forgiving
Get the 2nd sword then grind orbs until you can EZ mode the entire game with the flying DT bullets. Or git gud the options are plenty
As another DMC1 boomer I beg to differ, I've played 3 100 times as much as I played 1 but 1 is still my favorite. It just shouldn't even be compared, it's a different genre altogether. 1 is more slow-paced, atmospheric, almost a horror game. From 3 onwards the series goes action, and does it really fucking well, just wish there was more games like 1
I'm actually playing Devil May Cry 1 for the first time now. The mission structure weirds me out, especially how some of them are essentially "go back to the previous room you were in then enter a different door", and that's it. Other than that, I'm having fun, but how am I supposed to know how to activate the moves I buy? Just guessing?
>His weak point is the top of his butt.
Huh. I just attacked his head the whole time, felt a little bit clunky but not so bad.
What really DOES feel bad though, is HOW ON EARTH ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO FIGHT THOSE GOAT SKULL WRAITHS? It seems to block everything I do, I swear it scares me more than every boss I've fought so far.
1 can be your favorite because there's things from 1 that I love the most too, (best Dante outfit, best sword Alastor, best music) but when people start claiming 1 is the only good game and the other ones are worse? Then there's a problem because they're simply and factually wrong.
And your wife's son?
Go to the far left 'Actions' tab of the pause screen.
I never cared for le combat juggling meem.
The series essentially began and died with 1 for me.
>goat skull wraiths
You mean the Scissors?
Hit them while they aren't neutral (while attacking or recovering) or parry them with sord
Shotgun also helps
>parry
What on earth
I'm gonna go look this up
It's good but super basic and rather dated.
>HOW ON EARTH ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO FIGHT THOSE GOAT SKULL WRAITHS?
Most efficient way is similiar to Phantom, Helm Breakers. Get under him and jump up and off his face and come down with it DT'd. If you can't get under him, naturally you could try the wall. He'll enter an enraged state after taking so much damage, so when he starts darting in and out of the arena lock-on to him so Dante points with his guns where he is and roll when necessary. Taunt on the off points when you can to build up your DT bar.
>good action gameplay is a meme
1 literally introduced juggling. You just don't want to admit you're a fucking hipster.
This is only possible via infinite DT costumes and DT'd enemies. Not normal play ever.
Devil may cry has always been pure anime you doofus. The biggest inspiration for Dante was
Space Adventure Cobra.
yes, the gameplay is trash and the games that come after it in the timeline basically act as if it never existed.
That’s just when you swing your sword at the same time as them and cancel each other’s attack
Wow you're really fucking stupid AND hipster. Hahaha.
Now that 5 is out, watching Yea Forums make some of the most pathetic excuses you could possibly think of to be special snowflakes sure is funny.
I browse pornhub regularly
I watch way too many javs
Is DMC3 in the HD collection an easier starting difficulty?
high peak autism. sorry dmc1 killed your dog or something
yes. HD version is the special edition, which toned down the difficulty of normal mode and renamed the previous normal mode as hard mode. the original dante's awakening was closer to DMC1's difficulty. special edition is better overall though, more content
im still in the honeymoon phase so i will hold my opinion on 5 atleast until i beat DMD, but 1 had the absolute best DMD in all of the games for the following reasons.
>enemies dealt a fuckton of damage but they had 90% of their health.
>enemies only DT after a set period of time which allowed you to kill everything before ever seeing one of them pull the trigger.
these 2 design aspects along with having the most consistent bosses in the series in terms of quality, best basic enemy lineup, and environment design (debatable) makes it a classic.
1=3>4>DmC>2
It's not bait. You simply don't let enemies DT in DMC1 because you can dispose of them quickly. Yeah ok so you can juggle one DT'd cool.
It bugs me more than it should that he went through it on NG+.
Not as good as 2.
gameplay wise is dated, but as a whole it's the best in the series, nothing comes even close to it
I love that cheesy castle horror vibe it has. Gameplay is also pretty fucking solid for a 3D action game of its time.
I feel exactly the same, DMC 5 feels like a completely different game compared to what DMC 1 was
now we've got some shitty looking plant and a boring destroyed city, also the worst OST in the entire series, not a single memorable theme.
>b-but devil trigger
meme status doesn't count
