I bought DR for the first time last week and think it holds up fine. Actually just finished NG+ and reached LV50.
Save points are fine, and the game places them around the mall liberally. Being forced to stand still while aiming is admittedly annoying at first (especially since you can move while aiming your camera) but I can kind of understand if the devs wanted to make the player feel vulnerable.
I've never actually struggled with animations getting interrupted.

The AI is dumb but predictable. They only engage with zombies if stopped. As long as you call or set markers and keep moving with them, they're a non issue.

Never really managed to get into the second one as I did in the first one, it just wasnt as addicting for some reason, sure a good game but the series lost something I have a hard time to define.

Is this a problem with the game? i have a slim 360 i got in 2013, runs everything else fine, barely use it and only have like a dozen games for it, i got it for obscure stuff like Lost Odyssey and Virtual On

I’m a bit torn on it. On one hand it does challenge you to plan your routes and all that, but on the other it seems like a mechanic that was carried over from Resident Evil. A series that’s much more linear and slower paced than DR.

If you're talking about the same version as the Steam one then I'm pretty sure that's wrong. I don't recall there being any difference with the VAs.
