How popular is Banjo in japan? There's shit tons of evidence and reasons why he should be in, but I still think bias plays a big part in character choices. I think the only time they gave a character specifically for us was with Little Mac, since nips don't give a flying fuck about Punch Out

The Banjo games on N64 did well there, both sales and critically. SNES/N64 era Rareware actually had a decent following in Japan overall (which surprises me with how distinctly British the humor is in the DK and Banjo games). Banjo also frequently shows up in Jappo Smash fan polls.

They've got presence in Japan, though it's not mega-levels though. It's a bit so so from what I heard. Not dead but not booming. Still enough to make a difference though.

I find Steve unlikely because he can't work as a fighter and the Music from Minecraft doesn't transition well to Smash. Stage would be neat, but I'd rather have Spiral Mountain. I doubt the pack with Banjo is going to be a shared deal with Minecraft and Banjo-kazooie.

When you thunk about it, Japan really didn't get much specifically geared to THEM this time, at least in the base game (and thank fuck). Chrom was Japan's bone throw, AKA yet another goddamn Marth clone. They'll have to rejigger the blocky models to make it work. The main emphasis would be on the Diamond sword and Box head. If anything I'll wager that the Diamond Armor set with the sword could be fit around the Mii model to showcase Minecraft. Let's be real, Steve himself is at the very bottom of the merch line. The weapons, world, and monsters are far more iconic than Steve.

I played all the DKC and Banjo games during my childhood (unlike certain people who are just riding on the twitter "hype" wave) and I couldn't give less fucks about Banjo. I voted for Simon and Rool, Sakurai did both plus a Richter skin, would love to have more characters I like but I'm not a greedy dumb fuck like certain autists who wants 5 or 6 rep, all of them from old and busted game franchises.
After all Sakurai has donde all I want right now is for Smash to sell as much as possible and if Steve brings a lot of lil kids to buy smash, then so be it.

I think one of the biggest reasons I want to see them in, is so they can finally have a good, up-to-date design.

Don't lie, you shit. I've played the game too. Flight pads aren't readily accessible in most sections of a world, so when something's too high up, it can only be reached with Kazooie's higher Z jump + gliding (like the egg that needs hatching at the top of Terrydactyland)
And I can't believe you're defending Mumbo. He's literally a crippled character. One single jump and a shitty melee attack. His whole shtick is finding a way to get to the Mumbo Pad with his extremely limited moveset.

Well, there are not that many true Banjo fans remaining. A hundred, maybe. It's mostly Smashfags who jump on the bandwagon of Banjo. Same thing happens basically with K. Rool, Geno and Isaac. Instead of wanting the revival of the character in their franchise or the revival of the franchise itself, they simply ask for a character in Smash, believing that it'll help their character come back for some reason (when really it only helped Kid Icarus).

The team that made Banjo great is kind of dead. Everyone's either moved on or retired, and nu-Rare doesn't got what it takes to make the magic of a new Banjo. I've come to terms that they're dead.
I want them in Smash as a final resting place because they were always Nintendo characters to me. They were designed that way and would've stayed exclusive and probably be in Smash by now if not for the Microsoft buyout.

I'm far from being a Banjo fan, but I understand what you feel, after all Banjo is still seen as a video-game character. But I also don't see Nintendo or Sakurai bothering to bring Banjo into the game. At least not anymore. If we go by what Sakurai said, characters who have "no future" are rarely chosen for DLCs. Rarely doesn't mean "zero" though. But it's pretty unlikely.
I also don't see Microsoft lending a character to Nintendo.

We don't know if Nintendo is using the ballot results or even has access to them, since Sakurai is independent of Nintendo. And Joker was the first DLC character revealed and he definitely wasn't a ballot choice. Raising your own hopes because of something Phil said is a little bit silly since when don't what other characters Phil is ok with seeing in Smash Bros or whether Phil will prioritize a business decision over what he personally prefers.
