Protagonist was pretty shit too. Then in localization Red Magnus was changed from being a bancho into literally The Rock.

The story was fair but some of the characters and their conflicts were below par.

The DLCs were a bit tough to go through as each previous Disgaea protagonist showed more personality than Killia.

I almost want to work my way through the series. I love the series, so I really want to prove my devotion to myself by trying the post-game in every entry. Though, I am wary of the first Disgaea given it's somewhat sluggish nature.

Japanese values. Westerners make porn of characters based on how they look and Japanese make porn based on how they act. That's why even within the examples you mentioned there is more porn of characters that appeal to Japanese values than ones that do not.

I'm a newbie to the series and D1C is fine. It took me a while to get through the main story because the systems weren't clicking with me, but now that I understand how to efficiently have fun it's a blast.

Popularity and relevance. Artists are inherently more likely to draw things that they like and that align with their audiences interests.

Disgaea is a cult classic, though not massive. D1s cast (ESPECIALLY Etna, who is an eternally popular character) are well known. However they aren't exactly relevant right now.

Etna will continue to get content forever. Other characters will get content while they're relevant.

PW has plenty of lewd art and some doujins. Certainly not as much as some other series, but keep in mind it was a series that started, and would've therefore peaked in relevance, during the GBA/DS era in Japan where this kind of thing wasn't nearly as well circulated in the west as it is now.

Both Senran and DOA have pretty pathetic amounts of porn relatively, user. Though in DOA's case that's mostly because it's old hat and out of perverts' systems. It had a lot more during the earlier games.
It's really not hard. Most of the jap artists(with obvious exceptions) aren't in it for their waifus. They're in it to make money. They look at what's going on each season and go "what can I draw that's gonna really fucking sell". You can even watch them manipulating the "market" on twitter - you can tell the ones hyping a series for their sales apart from the ones who actually care, by how much they post about the series vs. how much they just advertise what they made for it. Especially apparent with gachashit nowadays. The ones just in it for the money never post screens. The fans have feeds full of them.

It's better than 3 for sure. Marginally better than 4(much better mechanically, eh story-wise. Depends on your taste of characters.)
