I really couldnt get into cave story.
I loved the characters, I liked what the game was going for, i liked how dark it was, the musics great. but i hate playing as quote. I have a simaller problem with samus in super metroid, but I actually finished super metroid.
the weapon level idea is cool but completely fucks over the player. Yeh i need to "git gud" but the challenge should remain consistent. the second you fuck up in cave story, it gets harder. I stopped playing because I tried to beat the final boss for hours.

I've been chipping away at hard mode for a long time. 3HP the whole game and I believe the rocket launcher is nowhere to be found too. I've gotten all the way to the balcony and I'm stuck on the Misery, Doctor, etc. multiple boss sequence It can be a hard game but if you focus on dodging and pick the right weapon for the occasion then it's very manageable.

I "beat" (got the normal ending, fuck Ballos) 3HP hard mode a few weeks ago. The Undead Core is easily the worst part but if you just take down Misery, then Sue, then get in front of the Core and just chip away while avoiding its bullets it becomes pretty easy.

Im playing on normal and even im stuck. and platformers are a genre im pretty decent at. ive beat celeste, HK, stuff like that. im at the final boss gauntlet with misery, the doctor, and the abomination at the end. why the fuck wont it let you save in between?

I really want to replay cave story but I don't know what version. I played through the original freeware version in early 2017 but is there anything worthwhile in any of the other ports that warrant a purchase? Like new areas or more content? Or do I just stick with the freeware one again

The machine gun lets you clear the game in a more challenging fashion by keeping the mimiga mask and getting different dialogue through the last areas, though.

Talk to Chaco a couple of times after the fight with the Doctor, all the mimigas in the cages will get hearts above their heads that you can collect to restore some HP.

Non freeware versions have a boss rush mode, let you play as Curly for slightly different dialog (not worth it really, it’s the exact same game with a different sprite), and have a graphical/musical “upgrade” (downgrade) compared to the original look.

I’d stick with the freeware.
