How Ace Combat almost died

Director of Ace combat confessed about how the franchise almost died
twitter.com/kazutoki

>Game was constantly being rebooted in development due to the game not being fun
>Ace Combat 7 really started development in christmas 2017
>the team was convinced that their dreams of a new HD game could be realised on modern day consoles
>but development died multiple times
>Without fan support in PSX, it helped them bore the laughter at how Ace combat premiered live on stage multiple times (is this game really gonna fly???)
>team lost their goal when everything they worked on failed to realise and brought nothing but pain
>Though it was for the fans, it caused a huge inconvenience to the company, no, to everyone involved.
>I apologized many times, made enormous amounts of materials, persuaded, asked, explained, presented, did everything conceivable, moved, talked
>What was reassuring was that a former colleague and former main developer joined the team together. “Wait, you’re going to do Ace Combat?” joined the team
>The higher ups told them to cancel the game, it's too much for them
>His Boss defended him and said he'll make it through but time and money is limited
>“Ace [Combat], we stop now and break up, or continue as is. Which one has a future for the brand? Will you do it forAce [Combat]?”
>managed to convince the company to let them keep working on Ace combat
>I was going to write [about how things were] until it was finally delivered to you guys, but…
>It’s kind of impossible tonight.
>To everyone who read this, thank you very much.
>I’m grateful.

Needless to say the game came out, is a major success and now they can bring the next game sooner than the 12 years it took them to release 7. If you did your part in buying Ace combat 7, you've saved the franchise from death.

Well, the game was great. Story gets a bit disjointed in parts and I guess it would have been fun if some characters were a bit more fleshed out (no closure for Bandog and Fullband comes to mind).

But the game is solid. Probably because they ditched all the gimmicky shit they tried to introduce in Horizons and just focused on good game feel. Good game feel sells games.

>made in one year
>still one of the best games of this gen
mad men

Attached: ac7.jpg (960x540, 46K)

i can tell by the weak ass story and lack of multiplayer modes that it was rushed

The game being rebooted multiple times explains why it feels so disjointed and how some storypoints werent fully explained.

based cringe ac memers

That makes me happy. Its easily the best if not one of the best in the series and you know there's an enormous amount of passion involved in it. Looking forward to the DLC, need my Falken.

>team lost their goal when everything they worked on failed to realise and brought nothing but pain
Sounds like my life

is the game "successful" for bamco standards? ...we'll get that trilogy port, right? at least 8 being futureshit like 3?

The game clearly suffered from development hell but it's still pretty good, I hope the next one gets full development.

Attached: 1538935892808.png (610x441, 393K)

Will this game ensure the future of AC games though?

The game did very well and had a lot of vocal fan support for it. The fact that the director is hopeful for the future bodes well for the series.

they were always saying like that

I just hope they don't implement any new features. New planes (maybe some OC:s from 3) and maybe drones as special weapons for FUNNELS would be fun, but I don't want any of the retarded stuff from Assault Horizons.

I want to dodge the missiles by swerving and doing a barrel roll, not by pressing A.

Also more dog

Godspeed, aces!

This guy needs a raise. And some hookers.

Unironically one of the best games I've played in a decade.

My wish list for 8 is:
>No changes to base gameplay of 7. Like literally just reuse everything if saves you budget. I don't give a fuck. More maps and story instead.
>New mechanic is just a new wingman system
>Instead of the sterile tech tree, you got a hangar and a mechanic to interact with.
>You also got a lounge where you can eat food and interact with wingmen and AWACS and guest NPC:s
>Simulator rooms to train wingmen in planes and aptitudes

Basically, I want the outside mission stuff to be like X-Wing Alliance, but with more VN elements so I can bond with cute tsunderes like Count.

Attached: 1552163296904.jpg (800x900, 77K)

>Final Mission was underwhelming
>Game was far into development and new assetss weren't being made anymore
>Kono peronally asked Keiki to make a main theme that would give players chills
>Result was "Daredevil"

Based

I hope the next one is like 0 and not like 3.
Fight me.

Half-Life was reset a year before release as well.

>yfw AC4's soundtrack was made on a shoestring budget

it's fucking amazing how good they are.

Attached: hqdefault.jpg (480x360, 10K)

Now how do we replicate this success with Armored Core?

This is the game that broke my no pre-orders rule and I even splurged out on the Strangereal edition.

Same, although i opted for the regular edition.

How the fuck does Namco release a PC port this bad? You'd think they would have learned something since the original Dark Souls.

Attached: ace combat 7 controls.jpg (1024x724, 356K)

>made in one fucking year
>turned out to be the second best game in the franchise
Jesus, imagine what they could fucking do with an unfucked dev cycle.

The timing of the chorus and the Arsenal Bird's shields dropping was great. Best single use of the OST in an Ace Combat game.

>shoestring budget
>first flight game OST to use a Gegorian chorus

It's a hell of an accomplishment for a shoestring budget.

>muh shitstick
go to hell

Christ, no wonder Kono had looked like he was dying the past few years on his twitter photos.

>bad PC port

What problems were people having with the PC port, exactly? I know there was the debacle with the HOTAS sticks not working.

I can't compare to Assault Horizon's port but 7 has been running beautifully on my less-than-stellar laptop.

I was surprised at how well optimized it was, it ran pretty well on my shit pc
wouldnt know about flightsticks I use a controller lol

Cope, poorfag.

Attached: P4wBXEY.jpg (4048x3036, 2.82M)

Remember when Jumpforce fags shitted on him about Ace Combat 7 being in a convention and playable and how dead he feels inside and how worried he was about the series existing? I can't imagine how bad he felt that he apologized for it, knowing at the time that maybe Ace combat would have been dead since nobody cares about it.

This passion is why nip games are the best.

The PC port is godly in all aspects except controller support.

Nice plastic shit for little boy you got there.

Jesus. This man is an unsung hero. I've never been so grateful to a dev for making a game actually happen.

Maybe it was the restrictions that made AC7 so good? Because it's so focused and tight, I feel like maybe it was a blessing in disguise the devs didn't have time to bloat it up and ruin it.

Attached: acestonehenge1-mini.jpg (1500x600, 223K)

At least they got their just deserts in the form of an absolute turd of a game.

Megalith is awesome for a low budget song

Daredevil is legit my favorite AC song ever. So majestic.
Can't believe Keiki pumped it out on a hurry past the deadline

One dev in Project Ace is worth a hundred western devs.

Says a lot more about modern games than it does about Ace Combat 7 specifically.

Goddamn holy shit. Glad they did it because it turned out to be the best. I wonder what their standard were if the first version didn't meet it. Maybe they thought it would be fine to just do an AC4 HD

Agreed

Where's the tweets about that exactly

Attached: 1527508338723.jpg (2000x1539, 247K)

I still more of the game had been about Spare Squadron taking on questionable missions. There really wasn't anything interesting about Strider and the only character with development was Count who was from Spare anyways.

Even in the golden days, AC7 would've still been regarded as a really good game.

>You're ttelling me there's only two aircrafts taking that beast on?
>No...
>...Only one

Ace Combat is a masterclass of making the player feel like an absolute badass. Other dev teams should take notice

>dude we need a song that will give us goosebumps during gameplay
>ok boss no probrem
The fact Daredevil was a last minute addition makes me really appreciate it more.

That mission where you intercept those flying resource packages through the clouds is the ultimate boner fuel.

here's where the translations are from

Thanks

It's legit impossible to port he PS2 games due to how expensive the licenses would be

>Simulator rooms

Electrosphere

Attached: 1522009966608.jpg (794x1059, 158K)

The only way I could see it happening is if they manage to work out some kind of deal with all those companies when they're hashing out the next game, but even then I'm not too hopeful.

is this why 7 feels like it has a soul? Like in particular 0 or 3

port is great you mongoloid.

Very good

Attached: 1534907037440.png (358x374, 115K)

w2c?

I really hate that they dropped the penal unit stuff, it gave me some Area 88 vibes

youtube.com/watch?v=SowhxMT3dzE

I wish that had been the whole game rather than just like 1/4th of it. The bandog stuff was great and the game could have easily been the most kino title if they added in some wingman stuff and let you grow with the other prisoners instead of just Count.

etsy.com/listing/631784938/ac7-release-date-unknown-rosa-cossette

>It's a hell of an accomplishment for a shoestring budget.
If the rumours are to be believed, they basically threw $100 their way and said " it's a flight game. Who cares about a soundtrack. Just do whatever so we don't have 15 hours of silence."

based

thanks

yeah the other prisoners were much more interesting then strider or cyclops. I really got my hopes up that when you went to that island you would be reunited with them.

Reminder that Kono is one of the most based individuals in the industry

>Good night!
>Oh...my god......
>Why does @IGN US’s ACE COMBAT 7 review movie...
>Why do you use “Normal ”flight system...Why don’t you use “expert”?
>Oh, I disappointed you...

Nice to find an AC thread. Never played AC6 before, and I was wondering if the yurop version only has french text/english audio? It seems the game isn't region locked, and I can't stand french translations/dubbing, so I'm willing to order a NA version to play on my European X360. Would that work?

Tried AC7 with the t.flight hotas recently, was pretty gud but I'm not accustomed to flight sticks at all.

Attached: Ace Combat 6.jpg (1280x1024, 853K)

It's a shame Japs are so bad at English. They don't realize the translation makes it sound like "normal" like default mode. They should've rephrased it to "beginner" and "normal".

>Joined Spare at mission 5
>15 Spares
>5 Spares died in the 5 missions we were with them
>Count, the only one who stayed with us, almost died in the final mission
What if they wanted to do this in the first place? We'd get to know Spares better, but their numbers would dwindle throught the game until you're the only one left. Expendable, just like drones.

Make the games fun again

For Answer was the high point of the series IMO, with V being a massive downgrade (to the point I didn't tuch Verdict Day, lol). Make the games fast and get rid of the gay rock paper scissors damage mechanic, make the 'Cores look cool again, and make sure it doesn't run like dogshit at launch.

Also get rid of the multiplayer RTS shit V had. That was an absolute bore compared to FA's NEXTs boosting to above escape velocity and pulling enough Gs to liquefy the pilot.

To be frank, I really don't know why they went with the "normal" term.

THEY PORTED AC5 TO PS4

HOLY FUCK STOP REPEATING THIS "EXPENSIVE LICENSES" SHIT

FIGHTER JET MANUFACTURERS WANT THEIR PLAINS TO BE IN GAMES - IT IS FREE PROMOTION

Wasn't Kono himself the one who said a modern collection would be nearly impossible to do?

Yeah, if you go back and look at some of Kono's tweets from when the game was still in development, you can tell he slaved over it. Even then I was more worried about him than the game, he would mention the late nights he pulled and how rough the Japanese winter was on him. I'm really glad the game did well (and was good), for his sake.

Attached: 72722119_p1.png (783x572, 10K)

Who exactly are the planes being promoted to?

V's multiplayer was a ton of fun though.

It's not perfect but I enjoyed it a lot, hope Bamco releases more stuff like it and less cheap anime tie-in games

Yeah but that's just a port, it's the same product resold
A remaster would be way more challenging since you have to secure all 50+ of those licenses all over again

Image spending $60 on a game and you get a jpg of a dog. The series should have been cancelled.

@454121935
Great bait

Attached: 1525467618503.png (610x699, 381K)

Fuck off back to plebbit, Sony cuck

Not him but I've been consistently having problems with the hangar view only loading low-res textures and the game immediately crashing at the end of every multiplayer match.
Nothing gamebreaking, but apparently other people have been having the same problems and bamco has yet to release a patch.

you NEED to go back

>that F-16 throttle
lemme guess, none of those rotaries or anything actually work

>have a USB DAC
>game slows to a crawl during every single menu when it's plugged in
I unplug in when I'm in menus and everything runs fine but it's so goddamn annoying.

Bump

Fuck off, the dog is the best part of the cutscenes

I dunno, I think the AC4 mission where you save two civilian planes with defectors is great. I'm a sucker for protecting the weak even if it means an escort mission.

Escorting McKinsey just made me want to pull the trigger myself.

Pulling the trigger on him actually nets you 1000 points, and Bandog even says the load wasn't worth protecting anyway. But without him you'd get stuck on the island with the rest of the Spares so it's a mission failed.

>Escorting McKinsey just made me want to pull the trigger myself.
Then do it. There's special dialogue for it.

ADD MORE MISSIONS YOU JAP FUCKS

Man as much as I want to criticize them for the story and jarring narrative shift that happened when you switch from the based penal legion sqaudron to the random meme squad at the high point of that arc, Im just glad that the game was fucking finished and as good/fun as it was.

Attached: 1545697975346.gif (807x560, 191K)

Military guys who are passing off downtime by playing military games. Most of them are Boomers you know.

I did like having Count bounce of the Strider squadron though. It made Count more of a standout characters, while during the Spare bits he just came off as that one cunty guy.

Perhaps. It might have forced them to focus on just making all the planes feel really good to play, rather than adding bloated and annoying quicktime event functions.

That and muh ultrawide support

Better cinematic game than 100m western games. Rockstar should be ashamed.

It works because it's only ever done in actual gameplay moments where you're in control rather than being told you're awesome throughout the story and it's cutscenes. It's kind of imposible un other games because they don't have the story disconnect between gameplay missions and in-between mission cutscenes.

ultra retard

You're retard. SeeProject Aces made a superior cinematic game by keeping you in control all the time. Compared to RDR2 which is a glorified animation watcher. So it's not particularly cinematic either.

>mission 7
>mission 9
>mission 10 (second half)
>mission 14
these ones made me feel the coolest, with intense music when heading into a dogfight. especially mission 7. I wish it was this game's B7R and we'd visit it multiple times.

they will make a 0 type game, they already have all the assets they need. I don't know what the story will be though, or the time period

Mission 19 though. I almost wish you didn't have to take down the Arsenal Bird or deal with drones afterwards and it was just one giant air battle between the last remaining forces on both sides.

It COULD have been the Comona or B7R of AC7.

>PVE mode for multiplayer likely isn't going to happen
>multiplayer will remain boring and dead
Wasted opportunity.

Attached: 1525222379888.jpg (984x750, 36K)

I just want the fucking ace squadrons back. 0's aces were much better than recurring scripted fights in 04 or 7 where lol enemy plane is invincible

the ace combat games don't like to reuse specific gimmicks from earlier games. we will never get a 4 man squadron to command, won't get ace squadron intros, or the allied command thing from 6

No one wants a fucking remaster, we want a straight port. Stop buying into this idea that unknown bargain-basement coding houses tampering with classic games is a good thing.

>we will never get a 4 man squadron to command
thank fucking god
>won't get ace squadron intros
we got them in AC3D
>or the allied command thing from 6
nooooo

Did you just pull that out of your ass or what

I'm building a new pc and I am so excited to play this at 144hz. My poor shitty rig really struggled with a couple of the more dense missions.

Attached: happy sword.gif (550x550, 190K)

The fact that game is as good as it is despite being a rush job is incredible

What hasnt' happened in an AC yet but what I'd love would be the ability to do a custom mission/sandbox sort of thing. Basically:

>Choose map
>Choose type of opponent or % of land vs air
>Choose quality of land/air foes
>Choose percentage chance of mid-mission threat (Drones, aces, ect)
Ect

I love straightforward dogfighting missions but you end up limited to just a few of them, so a way to be able to calibrate a specific custom battle would be great.

sounds fun

>Game was constantly being rebooted in development due to the game not being fun
This is fucking rare priority nowadays

>mission 7 but with altitude limits so you can't just fly above the clouds

Attached: D0kQZwNU8AMMgUR.jpg (444x501, 19K)

it's a prediction buddy, I'm saying that now that they have all the assets and aircraft it will be much easier to make another game. we might not get ace combat 8 until the next console gen but we could get a game like 0

>mission 7 with stonehenge shooting at you so gotta stay at below 600 meters

You guys did buy the Season pass right? Pre-ordering it was probably a retarded decision, but I just wanted to give the team more money.

Attached: D1TS8VwUcAESlOD.png (700x560, 230K)

Not yet, I was gonna get it when I get paid next week.

"they were such enthralling creatures"

I didn't know Wit was a pedo

>is a major success

Except it's not. It flopped and didn't make back the huge budget it had due to the VR stuff. It isn't getting another installment.

I understand that line, but how that really worked in reality ? AC7 is in the end exactly the same as all other ACs, why did they needed several cycles when the previous attempts were mostly likely exactly the same as previous ACs too.

clearly says for ps4 faggot

>No one wants a fucking remaster, we want a straight port
I don't know what reality you fell out of, but pretty much the entire fanbase has been asking for a remaster, as in something like the games being remade in UE4.

Mihaly is kept alive so he can fight on your side due to nanotech medical bullshit in next AC.

And i´ll be there to ground him again

Idolm@ster skins when?

Attached: 1546897180360.png (377x543, 169K)

For S ranks I need to kill everything or just the targets at sanic speed?

Isn't AC5 running on a custom emulator?

You'll get CG or Side M garbage at best.

>fighting next AC's ace
>he's in a new superplane and it's impossible for you to hit him
>at the end of the fight mihaly headons him and both go up in flames
>the old man killed one last generation's ace before he kicked the bucket

prease wait warmly

A bit of both I think? Basically be as efficient to get as many points as you can in the shortest amount of time possible?

Maybe they tried some westernized shit at first but based Kono was never satisfied at the results

It better be the OGs. I don't want any spin off shit on my plane.

Do I need to buy the season pass or can I just buy the DLC as it comes out? Season passes are one of those things I refuse to spend money on, even if it's for Ace Combat.

Remaking them is retarded when all the games still hold up really well today. AC3 is the one that actually deserves a remake.

>Isn't AC5 running on a custom emulator?
It appears so.

There's both points and time thresholds that you need to pass to get S ranks

An Ace 3 remaster would be fucking great.

I think so? They might make you wait though because skins were made as a seperate purchase from the Season Pass a month after the game came out

It was excellent so I'm glad they stuck with it. They just made a fun videogame, simple as that. A long time ago I used to play 4 with an old childhood friend but I never fully got into the series until a month or two ago before 7's release. I played 6, then the digital copy of 5, and then 7. I also ordered 4 and 0 as well and still need to play them. I've always known about this series but I feel like I kind of rediscovered it and now remember how good they are. I played a little of 6 back in the days of the 360 but actually went and fully completed it right before 7 released.
