Their translations are also often pretty bad and are full of memes.

Really? Got some examples? All I know is Ys 8 port was pretty bad, which was a shame as their others PC ports were fine.

I've tried to get into this series and I don't get it. The catgirls are super cute but the games were boring and the anime adaptations weren't great.

If you were playing Mask of Deception, know that Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth are basically one game with MoD being the prologue. It does get a little insufferable but if you hang in there, once shit starts going it just keeps going. I'd say give it a try again and try not to focus so much on when something's going to happen and instead just settle into the world.
