It's true here in the Netherlands though, most people live with their parents untill either their studies are finished or they really need to move out to pursue a certain education. It's cheaper to just live together and make use of public transport.

Statistically speaking there's a near 100% chance I've seen her walking around there (when we were there there were ordinarily about 150 freshman, 100 second years and 50 third years) but this was well before MGS fame so I couldn't tell you. If she was one year ahead of me, there's a good chance we had Classical Japanese together because most people fail that class the first time around, but that class was exclusively lectures given in a large, dark classroom.

Because after high school I was sick and tired of having to do courses I didn't want to do or knew I'd never use in real life, so I wanted to do something I thought was actually interesting. My first pick was game development (harhar) but that didn't work out. Japanstudies was the second choice. There were a lot of anime and game fans yes, and a lot of the girls were dorama and/or jpop fans. There was one girl who showed up in a pikachu costume every once in a while, for which we all mocked her, but other than that I think it was just a pretty ordinary gathering of nerds. I don't know if they still do this, but there was a mandatory anime course during the first semester of the first year that was infamous for being pretty difficult. I heard they did that to weed out the people who started the bachelor because they were anime fans, but who weren't committed enough to stick with it. Because you could still get your money back if you quit after the first semester.

It was a long time ago so I don't remember the specifics, but there was a lot of Mamoru Oshii and Satoshi Kon, and reading Susan Napier who also showed up one time.
I think the main difficulty was in the fact that it was basically the first college course most of us had ever done, coming straight out of high school, and it just happened to be about anime, with a teacher who took himself very seriously (Dr. Chris Goto-Jones, who later went to a different location, in The Hague, because apparently none of his Leiden colleagues liked him very much).
