Let me tell you something: I LOVE the Doom movie. Karl Urban, The Rock before he became an insufferable prick, ROSAMUND PIKE'S TITTIES BOUNCIN AROUND IN A SPACE SWEATER? Damn, that's a good ass movie. I read the novelisation about a dozen times when I was 13. Loved it.

What made Doom a great movie, even though it's actually pretty bad, is that they just made it a fun little action flick with some gross out monsters and pseudoscience bullshit. It has a really classical structure and if you look past the dumber bits, it's a tight, gripping film. It's barely a doom movie, there are 0 fireballs.

But there were also no 90 pound women cartwheeling around brapping BFG orbs into CGI demon faces. There was no message, no slant. Shoot monsters and don't dick around with alien mummies, and some sort of incestual undertones with Karl Urban and Rosamund Pyke's characters, but that's a story for another day.

There is no inspiration or design from Doom 3, nothing. Also, in original there was dark areas too, but it's doesn't justify as horror.

There was x2 Silent Hill movies and neither is very good.
Silent Hill (2006) gets everything about the game wrong but is a somewhat decent to watch film (about witch burning for some reason) that you can watch with normal people and they won't have any problems.
It's sub-par but it's fine.

Silent Hill Revelations is retarded schlock that is both more like the games and less like the games at the same time.
The plot is a hodge-podge, it looks cheap, it's full of schlock and is just full of terrible decisions that make very little sense.

For example one popular reviewer pointed out the doll spider thing that turns teenagers into plastic so they can become part of it, saying "you just know this is some enemy from the game".
It's not, obviously to us.
But the film maker made a decision so bad people just assume it's a consequence of the game.

tl,dr I believe you can make a good movie adaptation of a video game, but you can't go into it thinking "I'm making a video game movie" much like you don't try to make "a book movie".

Nah, the first movie had the right idea. It should start out as a horror movie and then go full action in the last act. Either by awakening Doom Guy or one of the main characters becoming Doom Guy like Karl Urban did. The problem with the 2005 movie is mainly that the script is really shit and they were going for more of a Doom 3 type action rather than ridiculous Doom 1/2/2016 style. Video games are fundamentally about interactivity. The good ones have it at their very core, Doom certainly does since it's basically all gameplay with almost no story. That isn't really something which can be translated to a movie at all, I don't see why people even keep trying. Video games are different from other forms of entertainment since they require interaction, this is probably why other media inspired by games ends up bad/lackluster and why games inspired by other media often end up bad/lackluster as well. It seems to me that whenever these adaptations are done they don't look into the original source sufficiently to understand why it works and to figure out if/how they can adapt it to the removal or addition of interactivity.

My ideal DOOM movie would rip off From Dusk till Dawn' more than anything. Like how that movie suckered people in by having an incredibly hard boiled first half full of gritty realism, only to throw it all out in the second half and give way to killing naked vampire bitches with crotch guns. The first half could be your standard horror movie set on the UaC trying to survive the demonic outbreak on Mars. There'd be tension, drama, character building, everything. Then halfway through the movie, the remaining survivors manage to free nuDOOM's DoomSlayer, get killed off instantly by a Pinky for comedic value, and have the entire back half of the film be an over the top, unspoken gorefest where the DoomSlayer fucks shit up to a glorious heavy metal soundtrack. The trailers would not hint to this second half at all.

There are aspects of the new film that are DOOM 3 related. Betruger is the name of the Irish guy talking about the portals opening, as well as the Imp's design. They're taking different aesthetics and throwing them against the wall to see what sticks.

What if you make a story based on a tripulation running away in a demon-ridden station with doomguy being what they think is one of the big baddies until it turns out he isn't?

You could get away with dialogue between tripulation members fleshing the story and with only showing doomguy like 4-5 times and making him an absolute murderbeast

In Terminator and Terminator 2, the female lead is a maiden and then mother archetype. In Alien she is just the last survivor and in Aliens Ripley is a mother archetype. Those are why they are good characters.
