If you get Nier Replicant because you want the japanese audio, and you're unable to name your character, go into rpcs3's settings, under the Emulator tab, and uncheck Use native user interface.
This will make the emulator just use popup windows for things like text input and saving and loading instead of trying to do it inside the emulation, which will allow you to copy and paste katakana characters from the web for your name. The game won't accept english characters for the name, you probably had a similar issue with that russian thing.

And one more thing, do I need to make any specific changes in the emulator to make sure the game runs well? The menu was super fast, and I was getting like 1k FPS even though I set a 30 FPS limit. I had lots of issues with the emulator basically, but I should try more later.

For Replicant the only changes from default I had to make were in GPU settings use Vulkan for renderer, Framelimit 30, and check Write Color Buffers
For some reason with western Nier it ran like shit with the same config untilI I used LLVM in CPU settings, then it ran just as perfectly.

It's an ARPG with some character action elements thrown in because of Platinum. You'll be alright as long as you don't go crazy killing enemies because they are on your path while completing sidequests or traversing the world.

It's challenging on hard mostly for your first playthrough when you can't put together a good chip build. Once you do, normal encounters become trivial. Mostly, you'll be forced to adapt to bosses and change your tactics according to their moveset. For example, there are melee and ranged focused bossfights and some insane once where you'll have to go full defensive to be able to survive. Gameplay is varied enough and gives you a lot of tools to go through it.
Just pirate it as a sort of demo and buy it if you like it. Just remember to do it before reaching the final ending.

Yes, I wanted to use the chapter select feature to fight against the cooler bosses like Adam and So-Shi again, but because I was level 70 or some shit they would get killed almost instantly no matter the difficult setting.

I know the RPG mechanics were a reference to the original Nier, but I wish they would have either kept the level scaling very low or scrap it completely and let the RPG mechanics be only collecting and customizing chip setups and finding & upgrading weapons.

Story is different from any other videogame
The way it changes from one style to another feels unique (from space shooter to action rpg, all the camera changes)
The menu is exist within the universe by being the OS of the androids, and the fact that you can turn everything on/off is a nice touch
Each different zone looks spectacular
The combat is flashy, feels fluid and good to play in general
The main character trio is unforgettable for their relationship with each other as well as their visual design

cons:
runs like shit and crashes in a lot of pc (I'm lucky and never had a problem though), get the FAR mod fix
the lvl system is fucked up and either the enemies are sponges that oneshot you or you obliterate
All the different weapon feel useless compared to the default ones except maybe lance+long sword
Only like 5 or 6 different combos from each combination of weapons which would sound like a lot but in reality it's lackluster

It's a really good game that's held back by the mediocre rpg+combat system. It could be passable if you didn't know it was made by Platinum, that makes you think what it could have been

I didn’t like it. Couldn’t connect with the story or characters. 2B is a completely static character and never really gets tested, she starts off loving 9S trying to keep herself distant because she knows she’ll have to kill him if he finds out the truth, and then just dies the same way. 9S never actually confronts her, she doesn’t make a decision to betray the commander or not, nothing about her character ends up changing. 9S changes, but he turns into a lunatic. A2 is ridiculously underwritten and undergoes a sudden and dramatic about-turn due to a player dialog box (where the other choice is a joke ending).

I find the plot weak and meandering. I get the idea that most of everything is pointless because it’s a story about people trying to find meaning in a purposeless existence, but there’s way too much that happens just because. Also it has way too many Nier 1 callbacks at the end for no reason. Which was a game that pulled off the senseless tragedy thing much better because all of the characters were building up to have it unknowingly all come crashing down at the end.

I dont get it. I was hyped for the game but when I finished it I felt dissapointed. The only thing I was emotionally invested in was ending E . Every plot point felt somewhat forced to bait a reaction out you, but they were so frequent near the end it lost its surprise.

The game even fails its storytelling as a game at times when it could have been incredibly easy. The ending and everything about it is good, but much simpler things like 9S death could have been player controlled instead of just plain cutscenes. All the flaws in Automata exist no matter how much it costs. 100 dollars, 50 dollars, 20 dollars, or even free, the boring 80% of the game would always be boring and the good 20% of the game would always be good.

The progression of skills and unlocks only made the combat easier and more monotone, and because there was zero incentive to do stylish combos there was no point to doing anything other than basic attack mashing.

Yup, it really was. Not perfect for sure, but it was really good. My main complaints are with the difficulty curve and difficulty settings and also with the technical side. As far as the difficulty goes, Easy and Normal are too easy at all times and provide basically no challenge whatsoever thus making the game boring to play, while Hard is quite punishing early game but then still gets too easy late game if you have a decent build, know how to play and have done side content which easily gets you overleveled. The difficulty curve could've used some more work I think, or at least they should've had some more optional late-game content where you could've gotten a bit of lore or something and more challenging enemies to fight.

On the technical side the game is also fairly messy and they never patched it. It has a display scaling issue and on top of that suffers from things like pop-in and short draw distance, occasionally bad textures, ugly 'fog' probably used to mask the draw distance, low AO resolution, low light shaft resolution (IIRC), overly demanding GI which isn't worth its performance demand and a few other things. The game thankfully has a fan-made mod which fixes most things, but they really should've done better. There are a bunch of low-hanging fruits which could easily have made the game look and/or perform better.

See what I wrote above, but keep in mind that this is primarily an RPG and not an action game. Its core combat system is more technical, faster and more action-oriented than what you get in most other action RPGs, but it's not Bayonetta. Your build and level still matter a whole lot in how effective you are and if you're underleveled and playing on Hard (as you should) you are very fragile and in some cases can die in a single hit, while if you're overleveled with good weapons/build you can kill enemies so quickly you hardly ever get to do anything other than a few basic attacks, then you win.

If you play the original Nier before playing Automata you'll definitely know what's going on. I don't think playing any of the Drakengard games is necessarily at all for either Nier games, they're pretty far removed.

DOD or Nier? Actually neither of them are very good games and Nier takes place after DOD1, not 3. They may be worth playing, I suggest playing the original Nier at least, though it would really be for the best to play it before Automata. Automata greatly spoils its story and probably spoils you since it's much better as a game than the original, but I still maintain that the first Nier is worth playing for its story, characters, lore, atmosphere and music. Gameplay is sadly very barebones and repetitive, it gets a bit better but only in the latter part when you get more options and can more liberally use the magic.

Not him, but even with the limited movesets, the perspective shifts do help out in keeping things fresh. That and the bosses and sidequest help with that too. Even the more mundane sidequest tend to have some sort of satisfactory payoff

You can (and should) play on Hard from the start, or if you're having trouble with the tutorial/intro, play that on Normal and switch to Hard after that. The game is decently challenging and sometimes extremely punishing on Hard. You can dodge pretty much anything but against some enemies even a single fuck-up will mean your death, so for a good while you'll have to play well and be very careful unless you want to die all the time. Once you get good weapon upgrades and a good build with good chips it becomes less punishing. The real problem with the difficulty is that if you do all the content the game gives you, you'll end up overleveled. Being overleveled is what really trivializes the game, except a couple special/secret end-game bosses which can/will beat your ass even at max level.
