Yes, I know how to say Noir, but I've always interpreted Loire differently. If his last name was, let's say, Louwre, I would've gone for that sort of substitution as you did.

It's supposedly a subtle hint at his connection with Squall. Both of them (and Raine) have water-inspired named. Laguna takes his surname from a river, which flows calmly, contrasting with the more turbulent imagery Squall's name invokes.

I honestly don't know what the fuck Square's problem is, they've ported the games to so many systems at this point, they could easily sit down and do a retranslation. The FFT translation was crap, Xenogears was serviceable, and VS was excellent. Meanwhile, FFVIII has one of the best JRPG translations of its time except for Ultimecia's speech in Deling, which was inexplicably completely rewritten.
