Conan Exiles is kind of an odd game.

The building part is really good, and mods that increase the ability to place/overlap things kicks up over the edge, it's really great in that regard, you can build awesome castles and shit.

But the base game is just sort of limited. There's very little to do, the map isn't particularly big, with the main limiting factor being that you have to move across it on foot at one speed and are constantly bothered by mobs along the way.

It's a server survival game, which I guess has it's audience as a genre, but Conan is one of the smaller games in that aspect.

It really could have been great, and I guess it might be if you play on a server and make friends and stuff. I know tons of of people in streaming who love the RP servers and stuff.

I dunno, I had fun for a little while collecting trophies and building a big castle, but then got bored.

it was decently popular here when it first came out. there were a couple /vg/ servers that were active up until last summer. it's not a bad game, but it's not really a great conan game either. it's a pretty good survival crafting game first and foremost with a bit of a conan veneer on top. I think the biggest detractor from it being a good conan game is the fact that it doesn't take place in hyboria. sure there are cimmerians and shemites and stygians, but they're all on a largely empty landmass not connected to any of the stories we like. I know it would have been impossible for them to do a game like this that covered all of hyboria, but they could have had it take place in one of the kingdoms
I haven't played since late last summer myself, but when I played there were hints of a good game but they just weren't fleshed out. the world was nice to explore, and the bits of lore they did have were nice, but there just wasn't enough there. there was only one neutral settlement, and you could barely do anything there. you went there and saw conan sit around doing absolutely nothing, then you went around and knocked unconscious any good potential thralls and dragged them back to your base. I get that it's a crafting game and they want a blank slate for people to build their bases on, but I think it needed something more.

PvE is shallow, incomplete and the part of it that is supposed to be the biggest threat to you (the 'purges' that attack your base) are either:

>Fail to function properly.

PvP is crap. The combat system is alright and shit but raiding is just grinding and then going and doing something tedious and just like every other game ever made in this mold it's 90% returning to a server to find your whole base was fucked while you weren't logged in OR leaving someone else with that same situation. God forbid you catch the attention of some group of 10 to 15 fuckers who're all liplocked on an admins cock and built their base in a spot purges don't reach and explosives wont properly work. The problem isn't the game's fault at times, its the people.

That said, the game CAN be cool for building comfy homes. Just don't count on doing it in multiplayer. Like all games of this type PvE servers are often incredibly laggy and PvP will punish the shit out of anything nice looking that doesn't have an admin threatening to ban people for ruining.

I'd love the game more for the comfy if the co-op private worlds didn't have a retarded tether limiting having fun with just your buds.

These devs would rather reskin the top tier building materials and resell them over and over than try to really make this game exceptional. I feel strongly that the only reason the most recent patch had so many actual positive changes is because they're hoping the game snags some of the people who try it free who don't realize the game doesn't have any meat on its bones.

It was another early access survival game in an era that early access survival games were being pushed out every other week. And it was more "early" than most others. There was very little content at the start so it didn't compare to its competition. It's a lot better now, but the fad's passed and ultimately the gameplay boils down to tedium. I only have 100 hours in it and I can't find the will to play it again. I've done everything there is to do. I've built a castle full of named thralls. I've done all the dungeons. I've fought other starmetal. I've destroyed other players' bases.

Conan Exiles was ruined by the fact that the game encourages griefing to the point of 1 clan lording over an otherwise dead server on every server. It turns people into sociopaths and you wait until PVP hours start when a competing clan isn't online and then destroy all their work in a matter of minutes and reduce them to starting from scratch. Nobody really likes that shit, they just leave the server, either they find their own dead server to lord over or they quit playing entirely Then the PVE servers where a clan uses the fact that nobody CAN attack them to make sandstone roads linking all their bases and claiming most the map and there's nothing anyone can do about it. I've never seen a game's COMMUNITY ruin a game so fast.

The circular structure. Oh man. I remember the day I realized I could do that effectively. I spent so much time experimenting. Building was definitely the star of this particular show.

It hurts they didn't have some system in place to allow you to set thralls to patrols or to make your thralls interact with the base a bit more. Like, if my guard thralls actually sat in chairs at tables and shit. It would have made the comfy factor skyrocket to make it look like your little hamlet was in use.

I'll admit to it. We waited 4 months for a fix that made it so that entire bases wouldn't randomly vanish due to servers not properly saving during restarts and they sold us reskin DLCs in that time instead. It stung. Made hanging in there for these guys hard.

Now on private servers you CAN harbor a good community where people have open map rooms and the like, but problem is you'll have maybe 5 people on simultaneously at any time, it's just dead.

The game would be fun if the community weren't so shit, if people had the respect to NOT destroy someone's base if there was nobody online to defend it, etc. Last time I played I thought the other clan on the server was cool, they were leaving us alone but it turns out they were just giving us 2 weeks before they obliterated us with stockpiled explosives they'd been saving up for months since they had chased off all the other clans on the server. Not only did they do that but they waited for a night when none of us were able to log on during PVP hours like we were an hour late logging on and the first guy say he logged in dead in the desert and he swore he had logged off in the base, he got back and saw that our entire base was getting cleaned out. Really, waiting until there was nobody to defend to pull that shit how big of bitches do you have to be?

While this is a dick move I'll admit that the mindgame aspect of this sounds really fun.

Did you even play the game after the updates a year ago? He's voiced. In fact the entire game is an example of the only survival game done right in my opinion.

I don't have a picture of my castle, but it was like, way too big and not in a particularly great location (it overlooked the big Norse city), but I stopped working on it when I realized that even with mods I couldn't have my map room on the top floor and cover it with a ceiling, there was just no way to support it.

sure? But what good is that if you have a fucking empty server. Sure you can kill a few new players from time to time but that's gotta be boring as fuck, logging in day after day to nobody on but you and maybe 1 other clanmate farming mats to instantly wipe the next hapless clan to show up on the server.

I mean we wanted PVP wars but we wanted to be on to defend, and we wanted to have it be drawn out, if they just raided for any treasure and took out our mats and any high end gear they found laying in chests and left most the base intact so we just had to patch up and try to get them back that's one thing.

But when they destroy everything in the base, all the crafting stations, all the foundations so the whole thing crumbles.. you can't just get bakc up from that, you might as well leave and start on a new server hoping the community is better. Eventually you give up because you realize every server is this shit. Spics or Russians or Chinks who wipe you when you're offline.

If you think so you'll just end up lording over a dead server. How fun is that? Last I checked that server it's fucking dead. Empty except for that clan. For building yes. For the horrible bosses and dungeons that require an absurd amount of prep time and resources to not die? Absolutely not. Unless you run a private singleplayer world and fuck with the sliders to make that shit somewhat doable.

yeah. when you play singleplayer you run a local server, so you may get a bit worse performance than if you joined a good server. or you could join a server and just play by yourself in a random corner of the map. that's what I did when I played
also boss health doesn't scale and it assumes you're in a group, so you should either overlevel and abuse mechanics or use a mod to scale it for singleplayer if you're going that route

It can. You should include mods that work to reduce crafting costs of stuff to a level that respects the time of a single person. The game is built assuming you're probably working with the combined effort of a few people and shit takes fucking ages alone. The gameplay loop itself isn't entirely awful, but it'll be a shitload of running back and forth.

On that same note, there are also mods that bring boss health down to a level where encounters can be beaten without cheese by a singular person. Personally, I use a mod that rescales boss fights to levels meant for 2-3 people in order to keep them reasonably tough investments.

The best way to rescale the bosses is a mod, in my opinion, because then you don't have to fuck with sliders to the degree that no normal enemies can pose a threat to you just so that you can fairly square with a boss. There are simple health reduction mods that do the trick just fine.

The Elder Scrolls is basically the same kind of game and those games are famously singleplayer, I wouldn't feel bad about it.

RPG, we should see the uniqueness of Conan's world with all the civilizations of the Shemites, Picts, Hyborians, Hyrakanians, Zamorians etc. You wont see that shit in any of those other genres you listed.

Heavy Armor, Axe and shield. Swords are kinda poopy, the axe is your best friend and will make you feel like a barbarian.

There's no full nudity in the NA version so that's like half the playerbase gone.

Got about 600 hours put into the game if anyone has questions. The game sank after the initial 1.5 million copies sold down to an average playerbase of about 5k people due to it being a buggy unfinished mess despite having a lengthy early access period AND a testlive server.

If you're wondering whether or not they've fixed the core issues in the game years later, no. They've definitely made a lot of improvements and if you play it as a pve experience with some friends, it's a lot of fun and I can say with relative confidence you'll get your money's worth.

If you're wondering if it's worth it for the full PvE/PvP combo and whether or not the devs are going to unfuck the title at any point, I'll remind you it's developed by Funcom so expressing any kind of hope or optimism is proof that you are a moron.

Plenty of single player games go free to play, especially if they have an online component they need players for. They keep the DLC paid so they can continue to make money but make the game free so that it can actually have a playerbase.

When you read the Hyborian Age it tells how the world had cultures with basically medieval levels of development thousands of years before Conan's time, then earthquake, volcano and tsunami changed the entire world leaving scattered survivors to resettle and redevelop from hunter gatherers into a bronze age equivalent world.

It's basically Conan meets a woman whom he sees a part of himself in, and he takes her as an apprentice of sorts. They have the same general ideals but have different methods and a few core incompatibilities that make things exciting.

Conan exiles is a great game, it had a ton of interest on launch but they fucked it up and lost steam due to lots of broken patches.

The greatest tragedy is that Age of Conan was actually a decent MMO. It was fun, but stillborn, so the community wasn't there. The actual game world, combat, storylines, and trade skills were WAY better than WoW. I was sad when I got to max level solo and couldnt find anyone to do end game stuff with. I miss that game.

I read the original Conan short stories a while ago, and was surprised at how great they were. Easy to read too, with awesome prose while not stumbling into Lovecraft-styled mumbo jumbo.

There is an ending with a cutscene but its hard to achieve

I played it with a friend over the weekend. It was fun but pretty grindy, it took us two days and me disabling dropping items on death just to get to iron tools.
The journal progression is really fucked too. Inflicting basic combat debuffs onto enemies is in chapter 6 but making a skinning knife is in 3 even though the rewards for getting iron are in chapter 4.
Also we tried the most popular sex mod but when we tried to fuck he got stuck and I got launched so far into the air my game crashed.

Its not that hard. Once you progress in the tech tree and build a little base its a blast.
Basically what i did was keep migrating to more efficient resource spots and building better bases everytime.

We made our base near where the three rivers in the middle desert area meet and that had enough iron/coal. I guess the problem is now that I'm back to solo play it's turning into a bigger grind. 500 stone isn't that big of a deal when you have 2-3 people with iron tools but if you're alone and have to get that plus 300 something wood, who knows how much fiber for twine and then some other stuff the game gets a bit slower.

everytime you go up in tech it gets easier. At hardened steel you can start doing challenging things around the world.
Then it sort of snowballs from there and you are drowning in loot.

I rated this game 10/10 ,when my clan was the alpha, then I rated it 1/10 when we got wiped.
More seriously I'm looking foward to that single player Conan game before Funcom jumps ships with Dune

Also building systems in these games are always trash, the most viable buildings are always some form of commieblock rectangle with as many walls between the outer perimeter and the center as possible.

They sell you on the idea of great sieges on player castles but nobody builds like that because building pic related would be extraordinarily inefficient. Some Russian would just glitch his way through the walls, or instabuild shitty wooden temporary scaffolding to get up, or simply climb right over the walls (pick one or more depending on what Ark/Rust clone you're playing). It's literally the "Y Online: THIS COULD BE YOU" genre, just replace "YOU" with "YOUR CASTLE/BASE/CLAN/KINGDOM", and then in the game you end up with a box with no windows rather than pic related.

That just removed 75% of the promised appeal of the genre then. As bad as they do PvP, PvE is done just as bad if not worse.

the pve exploration experience is really good. Most fun ive had. Built a base and just pick a direction and walk that way looking for lore and treasure.

Your friend was hacking mate. The only way to fast travel in the game is from constructed giant map rooms, and only to obelisks you personally have found in the world. And once there, you have to run back all the way to your base where the map room is, unless you have another map room there, which are expensive to build.

My only and best experience in a conan's game wasnt even a game, but a mod in neverwinter nights 2.
The only way to do a good conan game is to create one that support the entire world, and nw2 was able to do that. Magic, gods, classes, dialog, skills, races. Since conan is a underrated fiction today you can only see a good story and campaign by modding.

Usually once a clan has a monopoly on a server they also end up with a pretty brutal monopoly of resources too.

It was possible, even easy, to block the spawns of resources in different locations with simplistic structures and if those structures are made of higher tier parts players starting from their beginning wont be able to scratch it for a long time. This is probably still a problem. The game accidentally made it very easy for players to act this way.

That's because God similarly also does not exist. The only difference is there's organized worship or "God" while there is no organized worshhip of Crom. I don't even know if there's a priest to teach you the "worship" of Crom.

Other Gods actually exist in the universe. You offer them things and they give you boons in return, either protecting your base from sieges, or calling on them to manifest as an avatar and lay siege to our enemies.

Yeah. Difficulty is up the ass sometimes, but you don't NEED other players. Bring a combat thrall or a beefy pet when you go into dungeons, that's usually all you need. If I remember right, if you're lucky enough to spawn a locust queen from a locust egg, those fuckers can solo some of the endgame bosses.

They are not smart. The world/setting itself offers nearly unimited potential for making great rpgs. Better yet, they can also be interlinked story-wise.
In one game, you play as some explorer/adventurer getting some artefact, you fuck over some temple guardian (he is a boss - its not necessary to kill him - more like just evade/confuse/trick). Guess what. Next game is about consequences of this theft, since it kept some ancient sorcerrers undead/demon army asleep. Guardian has some great mystic powers, and now has to kick army's ass. Both games follow intertwined story, both play differently - former is Dark Messiah style, latter is Diablo 2. Or something like it.

The problem is whether or not you'll even be able to do said thing. It's very easily possible to maintain a monopoly of the best and safest build locations. After a certain point this will mean coming into the server you're running further for resources, making you easier and easier to kill. It's also possible to hog resources and build close enough to location you don't hog that you reduce resources available on the map. You can both shorten your grind while lengthening the grind of would-be challengers.

Another inherent issue is gear. There is a gear game that you have to play to. As they've been on the map longer it tends to be true that they'll have access to Tier 3 and 4 thralls for their weapons and armor. The significance is the quality of the crafted armor. While you're making simpler armors they're building Flawless armors and weapons. Even if you assume you grinding your level up efficiently they get a numbers boost on that alone and that is before you're outnumbered in a fight.

It also tends to be true that when they reach that level of dead server they don't always top grinding explosives up. Clans end up with ludicrous amounts of crafted anti-base tools to just sit on forever. Sure, you might sneak into a base and turn their explosives against them. The more realistic outcome is that they notice a stranger online and tell the clan. Then they search for your base while you're offline and completely erase it. Even if they don't find you, they'll typically have plenty of chances long before you even out in tech and resources with them. You have to expand the size of your operations to get better shit to play catch up. Bigger bases are easy to find.

Most dedicated servers(non official servers) have rules against this though. You aren't allowed to build over resources or claim too much land. Also after a while most people reach max level which levels the playing field a lot.
