If the fate of a mario 3 speed run comes down to getting luck on these hands then why don't people just use a modified rom that disables them?

Because that would be cheating. You're not allowed to modify the game.

It's considered cheating to use modded roms

Why stop there? Why don't people just play a version of the game where you start at the end credits?

the skulls make a stomach

>why don't they just cheat?

i have always wondered why super mario sunshine runners don't just agree to skip the 10 minute long i ntro

why not finish the game before it even starts. like you start it up and it's already been beaten for 5 minutes.

you scoff but this is exactly what they do in bioshock infinite speedrunning

Two homos don't have a hetero.

The problem isn't there. There's no gameplay or skill manipulation involved in RNG while there definitely is in actually playing the game from start to credit. There's an argument to be made for RNG manipulation where possible, but this seems like a case of pure RNG.

>bioshock infinite speedrunning
like that dumb bullshit matters.

ISO =/= ROM
learn the fucking difference

It's not cheating if everybody else if playing by the rules as well.

by those rules*

PC speedruns allow shit like savestates and RNG manipulation because they're degenerate modfags who can't enjoy a game without editing the code in order to suit their needs. It's an entirely separate community from console speedrunners.

Meanwhile any speedrun of a game between the n64 and wii era revolves around clipping through walls to avoid 9/10 of the game

actual answer, OP: tradition.
the game has been played the same way for as long as it's been out. sure, they could modify it to make it faster and more accessible, but the community has just gotten used to and, embraced it, at this point.

pc speedruns are a joke

What games have "honest" speedruns?

SMB1 Warpless

That doesn't involve actually changing the game, though.

Super Metroid and Mario 64 are basically the pinnacle of speedrunning. Fucking Banjo fags allow a glitch that requires you to play on another save file that requires 6 hours of gameplay every time and that savefile doesn't count towards the speedrun.

Orcarina of time speedrunning is hilarious because they basically allow everything, including emulators while Majora's Mask crowd is the opposite telling you to play the Wii VC version(best version though).

For some games that is what people are doing.
They set up a second leaderboard for the modded version of the game, and you can choose to run that instead if you don't want to be a slave to rng.
See Ocarina of Time's faster quest for an example, although in that case it's looking like it's going to be used mostly for races rather than for competing for world records.

Doesn't Mario 64 have a long jump that skips most of the game?

Randomizer speedruns are the best, not really super competitive, but by far the most entertaining and interesting to watch. People play a game for so long that they forget how to play any other way, they just sit in front of a screen all day, playing a game the exact same way hoping to get different results. Randomizers force them to think on the fly and use old tricks and methods that may no longer be used. You had that one castlevania guy at SGDQ who couldn't beat the game normally after he fucked up a few tricks "the games hard".

It depends on what category you play as. 120 stars is the heart and soul of the community, 70 star runs is typically without the backwards long jump, 50 stars and 16 stars are ran and these use the backwards long jump and skip a few doors. 0 stars is basically any% and is basically a meme because its boring to watch after the novelty wears off.

120 stars is where you play the entire game and entirely based off your skill, 70 stars and 16 stars are also popular.

Vice city is one of my favorite games and I love watching people do everything in it quickly but god fuck it is not fun to watch somebody abuse save states/replay to skip every other mission in the game, which every single runner does. Yes I get that it's the most optimal time-saving wise but it just doesn't make the run entertaining to watch whatsoever

They don't really expect anyone to watch besides other runners, they just want their name high up on a leaderboard. Sometimes this autism runs deep and they actually think people want to watch it, that is how we get stupid shit like in ratchet and clank where they run and jump up a wall to skip a bunch of shit for 10 minutes. Exhilarating.
