I think he's fun if a little generous with style meter. Changing the bird to trigger so you can use him and panther simultaneously gives him a lot more potential if you don't mind multitasking.

I find the enemies going for me more fun since makes it more proactive instead of just sitting in the corner. I also have to worry about the summons dying fast. I do think the style meter should've revolved around Shadow only.

I like his playstyle a lot, but I wish he was a bit harder to play, or at least had a bit more depth.
It's way too easy to get high style with him. I think it's because his repeated move diminishing returns are way lower than Nero/Dante.
As it stands, just charge Griffin for lightning spam, mash shadow or DT install him, and summon nightmare whenever you can, instant SSS even on low quantity mobs.
Seems like itsuno was worried that players would just get frustrated with him and have difficulty getting their heads around the puppeting and ended up putting out the most shallow character in DMC with a ton of unused potential.

Took me a long time to warm up to him. He didn't really click with me and I dismissed him as the weakest part of the game.
However, he does actually have a higher level of play just like the other two and feels pretty good to play him correctly. Getting a whole room full of baddies in checkmate and then wasting them all at the same time feels pretty good. User your own dodge and double jump to get your pets out of danger makes you feel smart. Still haven't found a reason to ever use enemy step though.

I would like V but my problem is I have a hard time understanding where the panther is going to appear. A lot of times I'll lock on and press attack and the panther just pops up 10 feet away and starts attacking the air, and then I do R1+Forward+Triangle and he dashes at the guy, but then I try to continue the combo and now he's facing the wrong way attacking the air again. Nidhogg was "hard" just because I spent half the fight attacking nothing.

I feel like I'm missing some critical part of how he works.

One thing I can't figure out is how to consistently combo with Griffon while combing with Shadow, I tend to just charge Griffon for red lightning spam but I'd rather be more stylish with him. I like how they balance him a bit by making it so you can't attack with a summon if you use it for evasion.

Could use more summons. Story-wise and presentation-wise I like him a lot. Will experiment with him a lot more in Bloody Palace, and I'm curious to see how fighting Vergil with him would work.

They’re essentially materialized trauma. As part of V, they knew what they were part of was wrong and wanted to atone. As unabsorbed parts of Vergil, they had no purpose now except to die. And they needed to die, since they were a net negative to the reformed Vergil.

I mean, as soon as we saw the letter V we all knew and I think most people thought it was too fucking obvious. Even then, the game goes out of its way to never say his name until mission 12 or some shit, like it’s a mystery.

Yeah, I'll concede it would have been WAY better if he was Mundus, but again, they showed Vergil in the first fucking trailer and then afterwards it was leaked that there would be a third playable character named "V". I think it would have honestly been better if they had just let you use the cane. I appreciate what they where trying to do with the summons, but it is just kind of a mess and V's sections are about the only knock against the game I have.

There are so many cool animations with the cane(especially on higher difficulties when you start fighting different enemies) that it just kind of took the wind out of my sails when I had to immediately go back to praying that Shadow would stay near the enemies so I wouldn't drop my combos.

His character design sucks and embarrasses me a little. I think his gameplay shtick is kind of cool, though the execution is middling.

Maybe they could have added a charge feature to the cane so you could do damage with it while being limited

He's too easy to get an S by mashing your face on the face buttons, but they should've explained Shadow's positioning AI better.

His gameplay issues stick out in SoS mode where his kit just doesn't cut it sometimes, again mostly because of Shadow positioning. I personally can't S the Nidhogg fight for the life of me.

Griffon was a nice character though, and I wanted a good-guy full pure demon character. The series has none, so Griffon's death is a huge waste and not really even necessary.

I feel like to make him work better, Shadow shouldn't be roaming around the map. It would probably defeat the point of the whole summoner thing and it would ruin the separate health mechanic, but it should have just been, "press triangle and shadow does melee" instead of "press triangle and shadow has to run up and attempt to do melee".

Rebinding griffon does help a ton in regards to your range options so definitely do that.

Story-wise, I like how fragile he is compared to badassness of Nero and the even further badassness of Dante, also how he recognizes when it's time to fuck off and when it's time to see things through, most of the time in DMC the characters are unstopable killing machines that ocasionally makes quips so he really shakes things up. Gameplay wise he's the least fun of the three for me, I understand the whole shtick of being a summoner is that you don't have full control over every creature you send for the job but I felt like I had very basic control over them which led to them being KO'd over and over especially with how low their health really is and made his fights a lot longer than they should be. Summoning Nightmare is also basically an "I Win" button, there wasn't a single time I didn't summon him that didn't instantly result in an SSS combo.

If thats the case then the literally will not be able to beat Vergil, since you have to vary your moves

When is Dante supposed to get fun? Balrog seems like a complete waste of time, it's slow, boring, you can't tell which moveset you're getting when you switch to it, and you can't switch modes reliably. You're also clearly not experimenting with punches, it visually resembles boxing for a reason, treat it like boxing. Hold Y for easy side-steps, and counter-attack if you've bought the skill for it. Both movesets also have different Swordmaster skills.

Balrog is a bit understandably boring on its own, Swordmaster makes it feel like it should, since most of the traditional punchy moves like the dragon uppercut are on it.

I actually really enjoy everything about his character despite thinking I'd hate him when I first saw him. Gameplay wise I can understand why people think he's simpler to play than the other two but I really appreciate how they tried something new with him and I personally think it is still unique and fun despite admittedly getting a bit mashy at times. Kinda disappointed with how people generally don't like his gameplay though, would have really loved to see him again after they have a chance to refine his gameplay with retrospective changes and feedback from players. I mean yeah story wise he's unlikely to come back but with enough people enjoying him I'm sure they could asspull him back somehow but as of right now that doesn't seem likely either unfortunately.

My take is that he knew by then that the damage was done and either Nero or Dante would fix it, or he himself would do it should he win his fight against Dante.

He just saw the opportunity to fight Dante with at full power and he took it, and so did Dante. I really think he had already chilled out by the time he fused with V. He's only a cunt if he wanted to kill someone innocent, but the only person he wanted to fight was Dante and it was mutual so it wasn't like he was being a dick to him.

V was boring to play and I'm not a fan of his character design but he was awesome storywise.

Vergil is basically the main character of the game since he's the one who goes through massive character development, with V we get to see a side of him that's not just a power hungry asshole; once he reuintes with Urizen he's a changed man thanks to V. It was a pretty nice redemption arc.

Making Dante and Vergil fight at the end was the right choice though.

You can tell who played V by standing as far away as humanly possible and then running away when the demons died based on how easy they think V is to play.

The Christ allegory is well played. Sparda was always sort of a Messiah figure but the experience of being a frail human changed Vergil while his demon side was just a power hungry murdering psycho.

Yeah, the writing could definitely use some work. The idea of V/Vergil is an interesting concept, but the execution was horrible. In the first place, I wouldn't have actually made V Vergil's human-half, but merely possessed by him. But then again, I would have actually made Vergil do his own character development and not give the job to another character.

It never turns out well when writers are too afraid to make bold, original decisions with characters. It always turns out mediocre or worse.

In this case, it was the "safest" thing they could have done and the story suffered for it.

Itsuno claimed the ending was bittersweet, but what we got was pure fanservice.

I'm a huge Vergil fan but I think the biggest tragedy of DMC5 is that V isn't his own character. I really like him a lot. I like him more than Nero even. He's really cool so it feels like such a waste that he essentially isn't even real and can't really come back.

it was an attempt at a reboot so it isn't canon to the rest of the series. it's actually a decent game as long as you don't hold it to the same standards as the rest of the series. most of its issues are cosmetic and the combat system is pretty solid.

I feel like it really comes down to offloading more control to the AI of the summons vs direct control the player has. I think the gameplay designers were in a bit of a bind with V because the only real way to have complete control of the summons that I can think of is to make V control like an RTS with keybindings for selecting Griffon or Shadow or Nightmare and then controlling them individually or in a group like an RTS with units and etc. But it feels like they didn't hit the middle ground for control and AI offloading here, and gave you too much direct control, which felt a bit forced partially because it's a DMC game where you need that to have that type of control before you get into autoassist or having the game play itself. But the freedom they gave you over the summons is weird but when you want to execute more control, you find you can't do it or it doesn't control quite like how you want. They should've went with a more sophisticated Chaos Legion setup with removed RPG elements and more advanced AI that is possible. If Itsuno decides to make DD2 with a summoner class, I hope he refines V's type of gameplay more.
