What genre would be the best fit for a magical girl game?

i want to be a mahou shoujo

like hulk ultimate destruction

Whatever Battle network was.

Arkham City

No I’m dead serious. Maybe not in tone but definitely in mechanics.

90s era Action/Adventure
power combining like Kirby 64 or something but no crafting or open world bullshit
if not from an established IP then fucktons of dresses, hats, hair ribbons, etc

Open world to allow for a lot of focus on movement mechanics. Hopping across rooftops is fundamental for magical girls. I would make the combat focus on boss fights to replicate the monster of the week feel with an option for multiplayer coop.

a combination of an RPG, a raising game, and a dating sim rolled into one similar to Evangelion 2 for ps2 and psp but magical girl themed.

shmup

oh god you're right

Depends on what series are used

you know i'd buy the fuck out of that

youtu.be/tY_nphZ2RaU

madoka portable kind of already has this style and also has first person dungeon crawling gameplay

Beat'em up (Sailor Moon did it to death)
Action
Shmup
is onto something

Some metroidvania/bullet hell hybrid like Rabi-Ribi.

Dating sim, of course

A top down twin-stick shooter like pokey and rocky

Only if it provides a backstory for the greatest psychopath on the series.

Straight or gay?

survival horror

Something something purest form of love.

It's Magical Girls, so gay

CRPG.
Not the usual Dragon Quest inspired stuff, but a good, nice, overly complex CRPG that values SOL stuff as much as combat. I want a Mahou Shoujo game where I can talk down the monsters and befriend them, then blast their boss with Love powered lasers!

>CRPG
But DQ isn't a crpg.

God I want to smack Fate's ass.

Sidescroller beat-em-up. Toss in some light Metroidvania elements to spice things up if you want.

Third person action

Bullethell shmup if you ask me.
However something like would be hype as fuck.
Also, a turf war between mahou gangs à la Sengoku Rance.

Something like Kid Icarus for the 3DS would be perfect for 2hu. The dialogue happens in real time, you have a blend of 3D shmup segments and grounded segments where you can let it rip, spellcards can still work the same way. It pisses me off that it will never be done in a competent level.

Then learn danmakufu and make it a reality.
Touhou is already a magical girl bullet hell.

50% persona-ish social links, slice of life-y game where you just go around town doing stuff
50% some kind of action game, whether that be like a musou or closer to an action RPG or whatever the proper term for DMC/Bayo style action games is, depends on what you wanna do but either way it wouldn't be turn-based I'd reckon.

RTT, you command group of magical girls, pick specific ones for missions, outfit them then rain destruction on enemy forces.

I want an old Fallout-style game with Magical Girls.

Yeah I know, there are a lot of shmups featuring magic girls.
You could always make your dream shmup tho, I would love to see something similar to Blue Revolver, but even more focused on freeform hardcore music and the 80's mahou shoujo aesthetic, all blended together.

honestly shmups with magical girls just feels like set dressing rather than an actual magical girl game.

I think the best "magical girl" game I've ever played is senran kagura of all things. And it's not even a magical girl game, it's about ninjas. I just think it had all the mechanics down and while not being flawless is a great baseline to work with if you wanted to make a proper magical girl game.

This is a great setup for a magical girl game, just flash it out with all the details, and you can develop a successful game.

>rather than an actual magical girl game
Nigga you can make a magical girl game following any genre you want and it could be a proper mahou shoujo if you approach it right.
Want it to be a slice of life school simulator? Sure
How about then you get invaders and you transform and flight like in motherfucking Ace Combat? Awesome.
The most memorable stories have been all about taking the formula and twisting it in a unexpected way although for most people that just mean it gets more edgy as it goes on.

Rhythm

a magical girl dating sim and raising simulation game where you play as a young wizard that builds a harem and levels them up into magical girls like pokemon. you have to be careful about how you interact with them because you can cause drama and infighting within your mahou shoujo harem. also they can become slutty and corrupted into succubus forms and then try to drain all of your energy.

Sorta like Littlewitch Romanesque?
