What are some undeniably flawless space sims?
inb4: Freelancer
OH SHIT I'M FEELING IT
FS2 was basically the ultimate refinement of the space sim genre, and it's only gotten better in the years since the community got the source code.
Yes. FS2 is never going to fucking die
youtube.com
Loved playing freelancer online. There was this mod I don't remember and it was mmo. Was so good, might download again.
hey hey people...
I would kill for a copy. GOG managed to get Diablo, i hope they can get this to. I want to see how good it is for myself
GOG already has it.
Sorry i meant freelancer. I already have this gem. Never manged to save the Enif station tough
Thanks for the recommendation for tachyon. Looks great
OH SHIT I'M FEELING IT
While we're at it...
tachyon got boring and samey really fast.
I am suddenly salivating at the thought of buying a new hotas.
freespace 2
tie fighter
klingon academy
edge of chaos independence war 2
Is there hope for Freespace 3?
No need to dismiss Descent: Freespace - the Great War
It was fucking great to begin with, FS2 was just a fantastic sequel
is there a hope for vidya industry?
hey one can dream right?
tfw no way to get Freelancer legally anymore
Yes, but remember about rude awakening.
Im still not sure if star citzen is scam or the next Half life 3 kek
Both.
That just means you can pirate it guilt-free.
H E L L Y E A H F U C K Y E A H
No. But that's okay. We've got FS2 Open, which lets everyone make their own Freespace 3 (or their own Wing Commander, or their own anime space opera, or their own BSG, or whatever other space fighter game they want to make). Besides, if they made FS3 now, can you imagine how dumbed down it would have to be?
But if you get FS2, you can play FS1 for free via the FSPort mod.
What kind of psycho would rip off the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel?
Lol true. The steam reviews would be lit tough. "Ungh i cant play this, it does not support my ps4 controller. And what is a joystick? "
Popularisation of gaming was a mistake...
>or their own Wing Commander, or their own anime space opera, or their own BSG
By the way, that's not an exaggeration - those are all mods that have already been made for FS2.
>Control scheme reduced to the few buttons offered by joypads
The Diaspora Mod is really great
>buy Tachyon on Steam
>the digital retail version doesn't even come with the FMV cutscenes
Pirates win again.
>tfw Yea Forumslancer is dead
So does this supports vr and hotas? Any link to the vr mod please?
It's amazing how most modern developers (including Chris himself, it seems) misses the point of what made Freelancer such an amazing game.
It wasn't the combat, it wasn't the story, it wasn't even the ships. Freelancer was unrealistic, but even so it _made space interesting_ to explore and traverse. Going beacon to beacon in a dense nebula or avoiding giant ice spikes to find a wormhole that took you to a forgotten, forlorn sector might not be "realistic," but it made it memorable and engaging to experience, even after repeated playthroughs.
It's not combat realism that killed the space sim, it's "space" realism.
Disco. It's a hot fucking mess, but it's the best space RP you can get today despite that.
Not him, and I don't know about VR, but I do know you need to do a bit of work to get HOTAS working, because FS2 can only recognize one device. You need to use a program like vJoy to turn your HOTAS into a single virtual device to use with FS2. I've been meaning to look up how to do that, because I just got a HOTAS myself.
>tfw people keep telling me rebel galaxy 2 is the next freelancer
>space is the same dull look it is in every modern space game
Based.
But look its shiny and makes your graphics card cry!
It's too bad Ancient-Shivan War never got finished.
>klingon academy
Top-tier taste
Too bad it's way too complex for the console tards
Discovered IW2 by accident on GOG a few years back and bought it
Was blown away. Great game
It's a relatively hidden gem, and somehow the mods for it make it even better.
I'm more worried about star citizen, and how it gradually moved away from the early screens which showed a more colorful, interesting space.
it has mods? i remember playing it some time ago, had to mod in mouse control, while game was fun, it felt empty and no point to explore
hey but your ship can do this so waiting till 2040 is ok
X4 is the closest, sadly
And X4's space is as soulless as X3's. For all it's faults, Rebirth was the most interesting take Egosoft had on space, and they've fully retreated from it.
look up underspace
that one system with the giant dying sun was pretty comfy
I don't even want to think about how bastardized Freespace would have to become to be playable with 16 buttons. The only targeting options you'd probably have would be "target nearest enemy" and "target nearest bomb", wingman commands would be reduced to "All fighters attack my target" and "All fighters protect my target", and energy and shield management would probably be removed altogether.
o hei trainwiz
meant to reply to I think the problem with the X games is that every system has to follow a pattern. The jumpgates are all at predictable corners, and that means that you can't really explore except to find the kind of goods-selling station you're looking for.
Isn't Elite on consoles? how does it do it?
By having nowhere near as many controls as Freespace does.
well that's disappointing
Nothing can top Freespace 2.
He's not trainwiz, I am.
oh boy a chair animation on a ship that i can barely see out of because visual clarity isn't realistic.
I wasn't a huge fan of Diaspora itself, but I really liked its gun sight. I use that instead of the lead indicator for every Freespace campaign now.
TRIPLE SIX, FIVE, FOUR...
> The feeling when a fucking Colossus-class star ship fires a destructo blast near you tiny wheeny fighter
This game is golden. The cockpit mod is the best mod in my opinion
That's an RTS idiot.
I wish more games did big laser beem cannons like it
DID someone say RTS?
>The feeling when a fucking Colossus-class star ship fires a destructo blast near you tiny wheeny fighter
Unfortunately, I can't really get that feeling from Freespace anymore. Because of the current trends in campaign design, I no longer associate beams with awesomeness, but with constant scrambling to disarm enemy capships before they vaporize whatever I'm trying to protect in one shot, and with paranoia forcing me to always take Trebuchets whenever they're available lest I find myself failing a 15-minute mission in the last minute because a Shivan destroyer jumped in and I didn't have the missiles I needed to take out its turrets in the five seconds between its arrival and its beams annihilating everything.
OP asked for space sims, not space RTS.
So dunno why Star Trek Armada and Homeworld are being posted. What you gonna do now? Post Nexus - The Jupiter Incident and Haegemonia - Legions of Iron and continue with the irrelevance?
Piss off. Libtard.
Game?
Similarly, large impressive ships now just make me think "Oh great, something else I need to disarm."
>anons, I don't feel so good...
>tfw just watched the updates because they were comfy
>didn't hear bout the game before
>didn't kickstarter
>dev is on endless hiatus
I feel less sad knowing it was procedurally generated. It was never gonna work.
Its a joke, dont take it so seriously. I already made a thread where i asked for recommendations for games like Homeworld bc they dont have anyhting to do with this genre(no replies). You unintentionally recommended me some, so thanks anyway
>endless hiatus
He cancelled it outright after getting committed to an institution and realizing he bit off more than he can chew.
X Rebirth
>>dev is on endless hiatus
No user, he officially gave up because of his health problems.
>Posts games from genre unrelated to OPs question
>Gets called out
>Piss off. Libtard.
>Overly emotional, angry, factually incorrect, and retarded response
Why is it so easy to spot Americans?
Heh, no worries. The problem with Homeworld though is that the best game in the franchise isn't part of the remaster and isn't considered canon. You can get it on GoG though, they changed the name from Cataclysm to Emergence iirc.
Cataclysm is metal. Prob. the only time i felt terrified in an RTS game
Pretty much. Finding hidden pirate bases, wrecks or jumpholes in dark gas nebulas was such an amazing experience.
There was also a pretty solid lore in this game. Pretty much every base had its own infocard, telling you about its inhabitants or its history. Even rumours had a ton of story, despite their clumsy implementation.
I wish Bridge Commander actually looked like that.
i wish bridge commander actually played like that
BC is fine, even if simplified when compared to KA or SFC. Things like the Innacurate Phasers mod help a lot.
Puslar Lost Colony is good
Unironically, Frontier: First Encounters aka Elite 3.
Everybody post your favorite fighters
I like the Herc Mark II.
A shame that the Valkyrie wasnt in Freespace 2
>tfw jumping into that Omega system with the neutron star for the first time
>doing it with an anubis
>then later learning that Sigma-19's route to Omicron Theta exists
It would die even faster in FS2 than it did in FS1 (and it died really damn fast in FS1), due to FS2 having more powerful weapons in general.
I love flying the thing, but I never give it to my wingmen, because I'd like them to live past the first enemy wave.
well finish it already
>neutron star
You're forgetting the minefield, the other minefield, and the pirates
Yeah. I also remember wanting to leave that place as fast as possible and going to Omega 11 for that of all places.
God Freelancer has so many cool unique systems.
In time sweet user, in time.
>God Freelancer has so many cool unique systems.
And pretty much all of them were located in the Omega sectors.
well fuck, at least i don't have to keep up my hopes
Yeah, he did have the decency to end it at least.
I remember immediately flying to Bruchsal after finishing the campaign to buy that sweet torpedo launcher, buying Stilleto and then learning that there's a Sabre available for purchase just one system away. God, I miss it.
we need more space games like this
>And pretty much all of them were located in the Omega sectors.
Nah m8
>Tau 37
>Tau 31
>Hokkaido
>Dresden
>Dublin
>the dark matter ones
>all of the Sigmas
>Omicron Alpha
>New York just for the Badlands alone
Texas was the only dark matter system I can really remember.
Galileo and Kepler.
Galileo and Kepler. And unlike Texas they actually have jumpholes and bases within the dark matter clouds.
Spooky places. No stars.
And nothing else too. Even the tradelanes were just fucking turns...
now that freelancer is basically vaporware there needs to be a fan remake of freelancer that maintains its aesthetics with more modern graphics and vr support with at least elite dangerous tier cockpit immersion
but then star citizen would have too much competition
Their lore was pretty neat. Something about a predicted dark matter storm in Galileo that caused the government to build another set of gates in Kepler. But it never came and caused Lane Hackers to form.
Yeah but Omega 11 was the best
Yeah, Omega and southern Omicron worlds really have that "at the very edge of civilized world" feel to them. Super comfy.
Man that webm is old, funny to see the old train model.
That whole series of system in general just had a lot of fun themes going on
>That system where the entire thing is a pirate battlefield
>Omega-11 and its diamond field with the occasional dead adventurer inside
>Going to Omicron Alpha and finding the massive amount of Outcast graves
Stumbling upon the pirate homeworlds was kino
Yes! That was the one. My most memorable moment from all online games was there.
I was just transporting goods with my small low end ship and when I went thru wormhole there was a massive clan/team battle. Like 100 ships or something including these massive battleships, felt unreal.
too bad about everything else
