And Zapdos was a reward for remembering the river nearby The Rock Tunnel. Because back in Generation 1 you were on it Adventure and the more you explore the more you were rewarded. As fun as the novelty of having a pokemon riding behind you was, It got a little boring in the long term and not really meaningful. Conversely Gladion was a stronger character that needed to learn that it's okay to lean on people and you're not mandated to take your entire family's problems on your shoulders. And Lusamine was a selfish cunt that disowned her own children when they wouldn't be her little dolls and instead took up Guzma, a self destructive manchild with zero self esteem who would do whatever she asked. The Aether family is fucked and you're basically helping them heal. Which is better than stopping a primordial extradimensional demon from rewriting reality.
