The earlier versions of Minecraft had far more interesting generated environments, and had the advantage of being represented in 3-dimensions, which is a massive advantage for this kind of thing.

fuck Worldgen-Fortresses are boring clusterfucks of tunnels.

the biggest problem with minecraft mods is the biggest problem with minecraft.

the game doesn't have a fucking "feel" or really "exist" in any cohesive sense.

it's just a bunch of shit slapped together by the developers. I mean I think the whole "end" business makes that pretty clear.

contrast this with KSP, who's mods are also fairly numerous, a good KSP mod will have stuff that generally adds to the general feel/atmosphere of "aerospace" and "exploration". (a good mod for instance being FAR or the various airplane-parts-expansions, or adding a bunch of soviet/russian-inspired parts, or "action-group-triggering-parts" so you can have your chutes delay deploying for 5 seconds after your LES fires and pulls the capsule from the exploding tower automatically)

Minecraft doesn't get that... In part because the developers are caught in a cycle of making 4+ different versions of the game simultaneously, updating them periodically and never really reaching a "finished" point with them... but more importantly because the autistic fanbase is pulling 40 fucking different ways and have been since at least the alpha version.

So when it comes to a "good minecraft gameplay mod" that's a hard question, because there's so much wrong with minecraft's gameplay when you really think about it, that there's not really going to be a good mod that integrates with the rest of the game.

the problem with all the "things to like about minecraft" are that they're held back by a thousand other things inherent to minecraft.

install optifine, there will be a new video option called "shaders" put shaderpack zip files in there, seus and sildurs vibrant are pretty popular

they unfucked hunger in 1.12.2, you gotta chew through food during combat again but other than that its pretty rare

Assuming hytale is as extensible as they make it out to be, you can add or change basically anything and just remove the garbage that you don't want

Honestly hoping this turn out good, because what they've shown is basically what I wanted Minecraft to be by this point. The combat, while still looking super simple, looks a lot less janky and stiff then Minecraft's combat, which is pretty much my number one issue with Minecraft.
