What's the best tetris game?

It is. It's got a story mode, local versus with tons of different tetris and puyo variation as well as online, unlockables, and challenge modes. Probably my favorite puyo and tetris game I've ever played.

By far the most visceral and enjoyable experience I've had in a Tetris game was in Tetris Effect.

DS is the one I put the most time into

Tetris CD-i for that aesthetic
Tetris Plus for them weird modes
Tetris DS because Imo that’s the best truly
Puyo Puyo Tetris because it manages to combine the two puzzle games super well and is bursting with content, especially the PC version
Tetris Effect because it’s a really neat way to make it special while actually utilizing powerful hardware
And 99 because the concept is so effective

The Tetris side is really well done, however at the significant cost of being an extremely painfully cringey weeb game that forces constant awful cutscenes on you and loud, obnoxious anime characters. Also, the Puyo Puyo half isn't fun at all since that game sucks. Hard to recommend for just playing the pure Tetris modes away from the rest of the cancer.

The official ones on the GBA are pretty dire.
Lockjaw: The Overdose is where its at. Almost as good homebrew effort as the Tetris Grandmaster homebrew for the DS.
