Sooooooo. What was the "Grinch Leak" season like back when people thought it was real? Why would this place fall for it? Gimme the details please.

Attached: maxresdefault.jpg (1280x720, 88K)

People fell for it only because they wanted it to be real.

>Why would this place fall for it?
The "leaker" had the intelligence of Light Yagami backed up by funding and connections that would make Bruce Wayne look like a commoner. How could anyone NOT fall for it?

Attached: grande meal.png (666x480, 208K)

>so newfag they have to ask about "what it was like" literally six months ago

short answer: fuck off

long answer: imagine if 20-25% of the board was smash threads consistently, and then fuck off

shitposting
im not even sure if anyone thought it was real or even cared, every other thread was "[blank] fags BTFO he/she/they/xhe's in" and other nonsense
there was no real discussion over whether it was real it was all just screaming into the void and hoping somebody got pissed off over it, so pretty much normal threads in a higher volume

The people who believed in the grinch leak have now become mad against him, now they are called stevefags, because they want to spam.

It was an optimistic time

Attached: r91HS2p.png (1025x4480, 514K)

the grinch has always been a very highly requested character and people were excited that he could be in

Attached: 08437b0d1c44bdb9dfe26a2e8476f64d.png (220x230, 6K)

It was fucking amazing desu

It was fucking genius level bullshit, I don't blame people for falling for it. And then like "oh the final Smash direct is going to be 40 minutes long, the last Smash direct was only 20 minutes long and revealed 2 characters and 3 echoes, so the Grinch roster could totally be real", who the fuck knew that Sakurai was going to talk about literally nothing for half of the direct.

>How could anyone NOT fall for it?
By having an ounce of common sense

Peak zoomerism

OP here.

>By having an ounce of common sense
Then why did this place gun so hard for it, as said above by others?

The grinch leak was the best part of smash speculation.

> People actually thought we would get Isaac

R-right, I never believed it either...

>>By having an ounce of common sense
Perhaps because the common Yea Forumsermin lacks even an ounce of this.

UndecidedChad here

The OC was some of the best I've seen on Yea Forums in years.

I remember when the first mutated/eldritch Steve pic appeared it was posted in reply to me, when it felt like it was 'finally over' in terms of the leaks supposedly being true and stopping Steveposting. It really felt like an evil was being defeated...

The grinch leak was an epic story where in the end, the bad guys won.

Take the "lol it was OBVIOUSLY fake I never believed it" responses you're certain to get with a grain of salt. It's easy enough to see now, but there really was a lot of weird shit connected to it that seemed to lend it credibility:
>Dude's name and LinkedIn showing he worked for a company that might produce promotional stuff similar to what was shown
>Heretofore-unseen images of similar materials for an unrelated film (implying that the company could have been handling both)
>The fact that it matched a months-earlier Yea Forums leak that also included cussing Nintendo out in French
>Some people who usually jump on rumors (such as GameExplain) being suspiciously mum about it, shortly before the actual reveal (as it turns out, this was because they knew it was wrong rather than the opposite, but hey)
>Some other more minor stuff I'm blanking on at the moment
In any case, yeah, it was fake, and it's true that anyone who fully believed it was setting themselves up for disappointment. And there were indeed people who were correct all along, citing the inaccurate background and such. But there really was a lot of circumstantial shit surrounding it such that "Yo, this one might be real" wasn't an unreasonable reaction.

You could make an hour long documentary on the Grinch Leak. You just had to be there to experience it.

>blurry banner image comes from snapchat
>people write it off until they start making connections
>Zoom In Enhance.jpg
>find out that the originator of the image worked at a printing company who worked for Namco
>his desk held unseen promotional images of the Grinch, verifying the workstation was at least real and giving the leak it's credibility.
>rabbithole goes ever the fuck down
>more connections, more details coming out every hour
>the image was never definitely debunked even with hundreds of Smash autists doing everything they could to debunk it
>was connected to an earlier leak made weeks prior (Chadondorf leak)
>leak has insane attention to detail in every possible way
>gets weirdly poltiical, Yea Forums gets angry and Youtubers get defensive
>#TeamReal vs #TeamFake become the two prominent camps
>Riding on the hopes and dreams of the fans, a shitton of unique OC is spawned

Good times all around

Attached: grinch.jpg (184x273, 7K)

If you truly were not there OP, you missed one of the best things that happed in smash history. Things were getting intense and insane, and you really had to be there to truly understand why people believed it. Smash speculation will never top the grinch leak again.

>The leak was all boomer picks minus one

>What was the "Grinch Leak" season like back when people thought it was real?
Fun as fuck. Tons of OC and shitposting. I think some people got into some of the "insiders" discords which were fun. Gamexplain's is about as basedful as you'd expect. It was a testament to how boring Smash Bros has become and that we love the skeptical more than the actual game.
>Why would this place fall for it?
It was another blurry image but what made it believable is there were marketing materials for the Grinch movie that no one had otherwise seen. People dug into it more and found other oddities (like the mural looking to be wrapped in plastic). People were able to track down the company that worked on the stuff. Didn't help that there were a lot of coincidences pointing to Golden Sun being in the game (Direct canceled because of an Earthquake, GS trademark being renewed, the healing item that was leaked looking like its from Golden Sun, the fact that the fake had green vine in the exact same spot as a green pixel on the mural after the Isabelle update). It was really a perfect storm. The person never came forward, likely because on company (which people misidentified was threatening to sue or something). The Grinch stuff was probably real but the prank probably went too far for them to ever say they did it.

This shit isn't ancient history that you're writing a fucking documentary for it happened like 3 fucking months ago. What the fuck is wrong with you people?

unironically the reason why i didnt believe it
theres no fucking way a character from a series that was completely removed in smash 4 would return as a playable character

The new grinch movie was coming out and I thought sakurai would put the Grinch in the game after removing the Cat in the Hat assist trophy from Brawl.

It was literally just people roleplaying and redditors.

>What was the "Grinch Leak" season like back when people thought it was real?
You know how Yea Forums likes to post screencaps of people on other websites, right? Imagine that but a lot worse.
>Why would this place fall for it?
Wishful thinking making Yea Forums unable to see how obviously fake it was.

>Heretofore-unseen images of similar materials for an unrelated film (implying that the company could have been handling both)
That's a lie. Those Grinch renders existed before the leak. Retards on Yea Forums just liked to conveniently ignore this fact.

>isn't ancient history
It is.

Admittedly, most of the Grinch stuff was circumstantial and a large amount of why it was real hinged on Sakurai being a liar, but it was fun while it lasted.

Attached: 1540680592653.jpg (523x1024, 164K)

Biggest piece of evidence for me was when people were passing around that 2016 video showcasing the company's process for making those wristbands and then the company took down the video while it was getting grinch leak buzz.

In hindsight why did they take that shit down?

Did they? I've seen claims in both directions on that one. I vaguely remember it being that the front render was known, but the rear one wasn't or somesuch. But hey, I'm willing to believe you know something I don't.

Do we still have no idea who made this? Do we still not have the original fake artwork?

>please spoon feed me information so I can post about it on other websites
Maybe you should have been here, newfag

>Admitting to being so new that you weren't around for something that happened less than a fucking year ago
>Starting a thread solely to get spoonfed over it
Holy shit. Fuck off and lurk moar you fucking faggot.

and now eldritch steves have gotten even worse

Attached: 1549922173513.png (1920x1920, 919K)

Not only did I tune out seven minutes in, I didn't even bother to check the main thread because I already knew what to expect. Sakurai in general fails to realize who could make who hype and when to show them off. Joker was a last minute attempt to try to recreate hype but no one knew who the fuck he was at that show.

Yea Forums is just that desperate for anything relevant to happen here again.

It didn't come from snapchat, it came from discord who claimed it came from snapchat.
Chain of custody is important.

Were the Grinch posters in the leak legit at least?

it was mainly just shit flinging between believers and non believers
would have loved Mach rider though

>Yea Forums
>Common sense
Pick one.
Remember this is a board where an user spammed smash threads because he wanted it to be banned from the board.

>but the rear one wasn't or somesuch.
There's been promotional images that showed Grinch from behind. Also, the render might not even be a rear view of the Grinch in the first place. It's most likely just an edited and mirrored Grinch render that's existed for a while.

Attached: grinch leak.png (1000x1074, 1.2M)

Nobody's been able to find the promotional material the Grinch leak apparently had. The materials only used existing Grinch renders, so it's likely the leaker just made them up.

>By having an ounce of common sense
I know you smash players are all fucking autistic as hell, but you realize that the post you're responding to is dripping with sarcasm, right?

Attached: F5E60C1B-DCD4-4A33-BEA9-3C450468480C.jpg (1025x537, 336K)

Yeah, that makes sense. Flip it so the hairdo is on the other side, fill it in with green, let image quality take care of the rest. Fair enough.

Because the company was probably getting swamped with a ton of bad shit from idiots on the internet. It might not have been the French printing company that took the video down. If I remember correct, a bank made that video.

Yea Forums is composed of 95% electionfag children and boomers
It's no coincidence that electionfags and boomers are known to have cognitive deficiencies and believed in grinchshit

I still think this fake leak was deliberately trying to emulate the ESRB leak, since that leak was one-in-a-million by actually being real.

>outside company working aspects of the games marketing (ESRB rating, promo art)
>leaked from the inside
>blurry pictures (always required)
>close before the game is supposed to launch

Since the ESRB was real, and people remember that one all too well, it makes sense they'd cling to this one. Having stuff they wanted also helped. Who cares if the fighterless background in the leak doesn't match the official one shown months ago? It has Banjo!

Attached: 1550961502692.jpg (400x225, 12K)

:(

Attached: 1540748516633.png (376x504, 262K)

Who wasn't the boomer pick? Chorus Kids?

What would his final smash be?

>common sense
the word you're looking for is hindsight.

No, the correct word is common sense. The Grinch leak had a fighterless background that had a ton of inconsistencies and too many fighters. It was obviously fake as fuck.

Even leakers who had been told the real roster were confused about the Grinch image

That's all you need to know

I'm here. Yep, you got me. I lost, we lost. Our guys didn't get in. 2 were assists, 1 is a spirit. Ken was confirmed by that point, so at least he made it.

But you know what? Laugh at me. Screen cap this or reply with cringe--I don't give a fuck. Because I believed in what I believed in until the very last minute of the direct. My allegiance to the grinch didn't sway one bit. I was banned for posting the Howdy dog up until a few hours ago so i couldnt even defend my fellow grinchbros during the direct.

I'll never regret being a grinchbro. It was such a wild and fun ride. All the memes, all the camaraderie, and all the pure hype and team spirit. I don't regret it one bit.

Attached: 1541114104216.jpg (848x480, 55K)

B-But the insiders are being told by Nintendo to damage control!

the only part I liked was that someone actually took the time to make a grinch wrrrrs steve animation.what the heck was he saying at the end? It always sounded like jibberish to me

>Even leakers who had been told the real roster

Attached: A FUCKING PLANT.png (1000x500, 19K)

The fact that the leakers doubted themselves at all demonstrates how believable the Grinch image was

why would someone do anal vore animation

None of the leakers doubted themselves. Don't fall for Yea Forums's bullshit narrative that the leakers were in full damage control. The only leaker that I remember doubting himself was that retarded Persona guy who ended up being full of bullshit in both Ultimate and Persona 5.

The Grinch era was kino from start to finish, I still remember how optimistic everyone was on 11/1. Sure the Grinchleak didn't end up real. But the memory of it will always remain.

Viral marketing.

Only real loss was Mach Rider

They debuted on DS, so yes

It was a horrible week. The OC was nice but Yea Forums was focusing way too hard on trying to BTFO people on Twitter, Resetera, Reddit and whatever. Yea Forums is at its worst when posting screencaps of literal whos.

It all started to crumble when Yea Forums convinced themselves that the original video not existing was somehow evidence towards it being real rather than being fake

That's like Yea Forums most of the time.
