Basically this. Mario doesn't even attempt to have an overarching story. And while Zelda can get pretty dark and grim, it also is fairly lighthearted and whimsical for most of it. But Metroid is played completely serious 100% of the time. Samus is a hardened bounty hunter that swan dives into dangerous, horrific environments on either hunts or extermination missions being haunted by a psychopath dragon that murdered her family and laughed. And there's only 1 timeline which makes it difficult for Nintendo to fit it into its family friendly image or just do anything. That's why people are STILL waiting for a post Fusion game

The Metroid series has a style that isn't like other Nintendo games, so it's hard for their developers to work on the series. They could hire a developer just for Metroid, but then can it even be called a Nintendo franchise still?

It just never took off over there in the first place. They didn't care for Metroid, so they didn't get into Super Metroid. Japs get motion sick from first person games so they didn't like Prime. So they're sitting like 12 years between games and then the shitstain that is Other M comes out. Basically the last good Metroid game Japan probably even played was Super, so to them it's more like a dead franchise like F-zero than an ongoing one.
