I think they just included that in for the sake of it because older Resident Evil games had choices. It's nice that we get to see what happens if we pick Zoe and see Mia die. But there's no point to it in the end since Zoe gets calcified and dies anyways. In Resident Evil 1 remake if Jill chooses not to give Barry his gun she gets to keep it. It gives you a benefit. But in re7 it's the opposite and you have to do another Mia fight.
