I think people have a tendency to forget that the detective's testimony and cross-examination are gameplay.

Make it interesting. You're there to break stalemates, but there's no reason why you can't, say, come up with a little theory based on your investigation (which is probably going to be wrong, because that's how casing works), or even have a contradiction if you discover something that doesn't gel with the court record, but introduces an element of mystery the witnesses could potentially use.

I mean, it's fine to complain about the detective if you're dealing with pic related, but we've had plenty of good detectives.

When will people stop using this argument? We've had good variations of almost every thing and bad variations too. That's a non-argument, what matters is that detectives are almost always a failure. Any rational person would replace them with Witness 3 which almost always redeems a case.
As for the "true purpose" of detectives, it's non existent in improvs. Because their point is to revel contradictions in the evidence itself, at the very premise of the case, as early as possible, so as to create an entirely new premise and justify seeing witnesses. It's just not compatible with improvs that usually start with airtight evidence that is unconnected to each other because you don't really know batshit about how the murder happened until the confession of the real killer.
And what else can detectives do other than that? "A little theory"? That's what prosecutors should do.
Anything detectives do is just taking away from the (little) functionality that prosecutors have left.

My compromise is to not have detectives testify and just be an asspull machine. Either that or detective testimony needs to have a contradiction like in the games, but the best way to have it not be an obvious, stupid contra would be to have it be a contradiction that is only obvious when the detective is pressed for information on a piece of evidence.

The prosecution settled on something that was unambiguously in their favour. Immediate guilty, and one that left everyone unsatisfied - except the prosecutor, probably, since they left the area immediately afterwards.

A good detective turns a good asspull into a better curveball. One that doesn't exactly yield to the defense, but doesn't pander to the prosecution either. Something that says "You've got something here, but...". It gives both sides something to work with, adds another layer of ambiguity and room for the witnesses to work with.

Once again you can't do that in improvs. Look, if we're doing improvs then we must at least understand the weaknesses and strengths of the format. If you trust that detective/witness players are capable of crafting a good turnabout unexplainable contradiction in the 40 minutes they have to write their testimony then you are in for a lot of disappointments and crashes. Failure states are passable when you have a guarantee that the testimony you are facing has one or more good contradictions but that's never guaranteed in improvs which is why you can't have failure states.
And for the record I agree with you that a good detective is one that exposes a fatal contradiction in the case's premise thus justifying witnesses. But I am begging everyone to understand that doing this in under 40 minutes with the shitty airtight evidence usually shat out is humanly impossible for most people. It has been over 3 years and witnesses have not grown into super quantum computers that can shit out masterpiece testimonies with the little time of preparation and "clay" they are given, we need to stop having unrealistic expectations, even pre-writtens where the witness has literally weeks to build everything usually will show weak testimonies and evidence.

What a retarded example. In a court with at least two unbiased parts (judge and stenographer) and theoretically another two (witness 1 and 2), they go out of their way to throw the decision at the hands to one of the two biased parts (prosecution and defense) to decide against their opponent.

We have had hundreds of cases without detective and rarely does it ever reach a stalemate. Now, I know what you mean, and I've been in too many cases where the defense asspulls and says "let's just call the detective an they will confirm I am right", then they call the detective and they do indeed confirm the defense was right. This is rarely good practice though and often invokes revolt, especially in the prosecution who gets cucked by a deus ex machina.

There are many ways to go about it and depending on the method you utilize it can even compose an entirely new format.
The most common one is either building it earlier and then bringing the premise complete to the game or building it with others while you wait for more players.

Cases are either written beforehand or built (building involves creating a premise and evidence, takes a few hours depending on how distracted people are or if people don't want to sign up for a role) and then you sign up for a role. Each role has their own responsibilities and guidelines, similar to the AA setup.

The actual lead DA kept coming up with stupid explanations for the witness's testimony. First that the ladder they used to get in couldn't exist where it was because it was eventually found toppled over.

Second that one of the peopel involved weren't actually hired by someone else in the case, which even if true changed nothing and had no basis in evidence.

They then claimed that a toy u-boat somehow obliterated someone's head.

Finally, ESL Maya spoke up, and said the one reason that someone had not taken the tank could only mean that the tank itself was not operational - a forgery for a scam.
And it fuckin' worked.

When you actually take your time to collect information about pre-writtens and improvs from unbiased oldfags who know what they are talking about, you realize that pretty much every single person who shills or attacks either of these formats is usually talking out of their ass. The first lead DA was vocal and chill, but completely retarded. He kept missing evidence and obvious facts, making assertions that didn't make sense etc. He bailed out of the case, and was temporarily replaced by another player who was even more vocal and even more retarded - when he was chewed out IC, he went nuclear, full salt mine, and tore into everyone for dismissing his stupid contradiction (that the tank shell that killed the victim was somehow fired by a toy U-boat the size of a hotdog).

But the defense's co-def, a Maya player who was obviously struggling with the language and only chimed in every so often, did so enthusiastically with just the right words to pierce the veil of the current witness etc. and continue the trial with assertions that made actual sense. In the end, she and the prosecutor finally took down the most notorious final boss character in AOV, and she vanished without a word.

Prewrit is more your typical structured RP game. You get a "GM", they run the NPCs and allow players to play whatever roles they so see. In this case usually something like witnesses/the defense bench/judge. The "GM" then runs the case through, giving information and prompts to the characters playing as it goes along to tell a story.

Problem is that it requires someone with half a brain run it, and since most people who run these don't, they're awful.

Improv is somewhat structured but only insofar that the details like evidence and who's playing what are sorted out in advance. Then, they follow a loose AA stucture (investigations or trial or both), and make up a story as they go.

It's as simple as no one has any idea what an improv or a pre-written is. They throw these words around without having no knowledge about the essential parts of these formats or how they came to exist.

Here is a little AOV history lesson: improvs derived from pre-writtens, not the opposite. Back then only pre-writtens were ever played, and for that people would "steal" pre-writtens from normalfag authors residing in other servers. This led to a confusion that put the very server in danger since at that time a bunch of russian ponyfucker hackers held a dictator grip of the server.

This threat to the server's stability, coupled with the fact that casemakers began hiding their cases thus leading to a struggle in finding actual cases to do, led people to create blank case formats with blank evidence tables which they would compose while waiting for players, attempting to simulate the pre-writtens they used to do. These are the so-called improvs, and as you can see they are equal to pre-writtens in every single gameplay aspect. The only difference resides in how evidence and testimony is prepared.

This entire switch happened during the server's first week. Ever since then the server had no contact with pre-writtens. Some people put up autistic formats that were extremely railroaded and even had documents with scripted dialogues for defense/prosecution. These are obviously not pre-writens, but people instead took them for the real thing because they did not know any better. Another element that led to the hatred for pre-writtens was the fact that a known namefag actively shills for them. But even that certain namefag only did his pre-writtens like 6 or 7 times during the entirety of the server's 40 months of existence. Therefore it is impossible for anyone in this server to have experience with that format, and, once again, as I said in the first paragraph, it is much closer to improvs than they think.

And now that the source of ignorance surrounding these two formats was properly explained, here is the actual difference between them.

In improvs the evidence and testimony is made on the spot as it is needed, and a group of players who (usually) have no means to contact each other will play witnesses. Since no one has any idea how the murder will ultimately play out they are more or less shooting in the dark and hoping it hits somewhere, and there is nothing wrong with that, it is a clever format that attended the server's needs at that time really well.

With pre-writtens, on the other hand, the evidence and testimony are all created beforehand. The case maker has unlimited time to create it. As result they can imagine how the murder ultimately plays out and tailor the evidence and testimony around that, thus creating the long term contradictions and roundabouts that can otherwise only be simulated in improvs. The weakness of this format is that you need someone autistic enough to write a bunch of them, which is why this format will never be mainstream in a server like AOV, and there's nothing wrong with that. That's why people who push for pre-writtens to be the mainstream format are retarded, that is simply impossible to happen, they will forever be a once-in-a-week thing.

As you can see they are very similar. Then you see people saying that pre-writtens are railroaded or that sort of bullshit. It is much easier to "roll with it" when you are in a pre-written and know the evidence and witnesses like the palm of your hand than it is to "roll with it" in an improv where everything are shots in the dark. Everyone has seen witnesses railroad in improvs, it is not a problem exclusive to any format, especially because, once again, they are very similar, people who railroad in pre-writtens would easily do the same in improvs and vice versa, since there is nothing stopping pre-written witnesses from just improvising or rolling with things.

The judge used to be a conductor, who determined the flow of the case, kept the improv within certain boundaries and guided everyone back to those boundaries when they got too far. Without such a leader, detectives have turned into defectives and witnesses are shitnesses. Benches can shitpost with no fear and everything goes to salt in the end.
