In an RPG, do you prefer to use the default name or make up your own?
Personally I prefer making up my own, makes my adventure feel unique.
In an RPG, do you prefer to use the default name or make up your own?
Personally I prefer making up my own, makes my adventure feel unique.
I only do it if characters and/or parties are totally customizable.
If the characters have speaking lines, an arc, and personality, I prefer using the canon names since it's not really my adventure. If the characters are generic, creatable classes, then I name them after my friends. If the main character is a nameable self insert I drop the game because self insert MCs are garbage.
First playthrough: default names
Anything after that: stupid names that only a 5-years old and I would find funny
I only give them a name if they are a complete blank slate. If they already have their own personality then no, I just use their canon name.
Depends, but usually, default name. Something like Pokemon and Dragon Quest I use my own name because those are stories you're meant to really self insert into. Stuff like Earthbound/Mother 3 or Chrono Trigger, I use the default names. Persona, I use my own name. Rune Factory, I use my own name.
Basically depends on how personality-less they are and how much the game wants you to self insert.
i always name them something like "aw shiet he" so every turn it's something like "aw shiet he used magic kaboom"
As a kid, I used to make the MC me and the rest of the cast my friends' names. The female love interest was whomever I had a thing for at the time.
If it's an RPG with defined characters I keep the characters name. If its a character thats supposed to represent me I give it my name, if it's a created WRPG character I make up an apporpriate name.
The only autistic namers are the sorts of spergs who play games like Persona 5 then call their Main character Ren because that's what people say his name is supposed to be etc, that's literal autism.
I almost always use default. If one isn't given ingame, I search online to see if they have a semi official name used in other materials or something of the sort. Exception is when everything is custom, then I just pick a theme and try to fit name and appearance into that theme.
I always made up names as a kid except for when I was super young. At this point though, I just use the characters' actual name, unless if there is none in which case I just name them random shit according to a theme I come up with on the fly.
I always use default because I guess I'm autistic or something. When there isn't a default, I go out of my way to look up the character's canon name on the internet. If he doesn't have one, I just call him "Mark" because that was the self-insert's name in fire emblem 7 and it stuck for some reason. "Jill" if it's a woman because I like how it sounds.
I use customized name for main protag and maybe pets and default for everyone else.
As I kid I would put my real name, now I put a nickname I have in real life or my handle I use for online games. For pokemon I always put the MC as Jojo and the rival as Dio.
>Play FFVII
>Rename RedXIII to Nanaki
>That scene when somebody says "Nanaki is Nanaki"
>The cycle is complete.
I'm not some stupid perma virgin, so I come up with fun names for the cast if the game allows name changes.
Depends in FF and Chrono Trigger I respect the original names, in others I use names I like
If I'm playing "myself", I use a slightly-more-fantastical version of my actual name: Samael. A good compromise, I feel.
In Pokémon I always use an insult for the rival, like bitch or fag. It's a cherished tradition.
Jesus, Yea Forums is literal no fun allowed central.
Hi, Samuel.
Unless they are a silent protagonist/non-characters (like naming your Pokemon) I use default names.
Are you a native spanish speaker, user?
Haha, get fucked, my name's just Sam
If the game allows you to change the name of only 1 character (aka hero), I use my name. If the game allows you to change names of all characters, I leave default.
I thought Sam was the short form, like Bill or Dick. Didn't know It was a name on it's own.
How is any of this "anti-fun", you chode? You're anti-fun.
I played through pokemon crystal recently and I called the rival NIGGER because i'm so fucking funny and mature
Pretty much nobody is just called Sam, but I'm the super special exception I prefer Samuel tbqh
How does it feel to have such lazy parents
>Not just having a chad name that sounds good in all realities
Alexander here, get fucked discord trannies.
The most autistic thing I do with names is un Pokémon, I give them names according to their types. Torkoal=Hephaestus, and so on.
Meanwhile, "Alejandro" sounds beta as fuck, so I always go for "Alex".
Boring people are no fun, amigo. And judging by the majority of the answers in this thread, the average Yea Forumsirgin is boring as fuck.
If it's something like the original Final Fantasy where their isn't really a set protagonist or characters beyond just class rolls, I tend to name then after people I know
I always name my main characters Oliver. Its the name of my little brother who died when we were kids.
Bit creepy now that I think about it, but it's a way I remember him
Always default name if available, except for Garnet. Fuck that "Dagger" bullshit.
I never self insert. Self inserting is a very cuck thing to do.
Yeah, that's definitely a bit creepy. You should stop or else you'll start thinking your brother is the character.
Depends on the plot and setting. I'll change things in a separate playthrough though.
I never use my name though. It never seems fitting so I go wwith something that's close.
Yeah I just use Sarah.
Do you ever feel like the wrong kid died?
patrician
I always change my name to Faggot.
I give all the female characters lewd names and fap while playing
give examples of lewd names
>if you rename characters with lower-case names, the dialogue will flow more smoothly but it will look weird when it's their turn to speak
>if you keep the upper-case names, it will look weird during dialogue but won't stand out when it's their turn to speak
Zoomers will never know this dilemma. I'm so glad modern games figured out that it's best to keep the names lower case and give them their own box when it's their turn to speak instead of trying to make it look like a stageplay.
>TERRA: Are you alright, EDGAR?
vs
>Terra: Are you alright, Edgar?
You are all nothing. Iskandar or Alexandros or nothing.
When did they fix that?
I used to giveTerra my crush's name and I'd give Locke my name.Things got weird when Celes was introduced
By doing stuff like this, where they just make "Knight" in red instead of making it KNIGHT which would cause Ramza's name to look weird in comparison if you wrote it in lower case.
something as simple as 'slut' works better than you'd expect
usually I check the looks/personality of the character and think of something fitting
leads to some good dialogue like "no need to act all formal, you can just call me tits"
Why does Yea Forums always talk about naming MCs after themselves and love interests after their crush? Am I the only one who was autistic enough to use a pseudonym for my vidya MCs?
When I first started playing Pokemon and Zelda, my name was SPIKE.
Default for games like FF6 where there's a story being told with those characters. In WRPGs I usually make up my own since they're a bit more open ended and not tailored to the characters themselves.
>when
This, or second playthrough is normal names but anyone with a secret identity gets there real name instantly.
Marle? Fuck that, you Nadia ass nigga.
Based.
lol Spike is a cool kid name.
>read walkthrough for FFIX
>author insists on calling Garnet "Dagger"
Naming people after weapons is really stupid. "Come here Trebuchet, is bedtime". Dumb.
If it's a predefined character where I don't really have much input in their personality, I stick with the default name. If it's a character that I create and pick dialogue options for, I make up my own name (or rather, I use the one name I use for all my characters because I like it and I'm very bad at coming up with names anyway).
Default names for the first playthrough, whatever I feel like for any subsequent ones.
If I'm given a default name, I'm going with that; otherwise I'll think of one on the spot.
>tfw boy but mom named me after a girl in the bible
Jael
she's fucking brutal tho
Your mom fucked you over bro
tbf Leto is a boy's name for some reason
but who cares about that, become the trap your mother always wanted you to be. It's your filial duty.
Bet is father does
I'm shit at naming and I'm confident the devs came up with something better than I can.
This has always been dumb in games with pre-defined characters (i.e. virtually every jrpg ever). It's just something jrpgs mindlessly copied from the earliest wrpgs that inspired them.
Always, always, always use canon name. Anything else is ridiculous.
i prefer my standard name i use for single player rpg's: dumbslut
Did that really used to be a big problem? FF6 is the only game I remember doing that.
pictured: the mental maturity and sense of humor of the average RPG character renamer.
Based and redpilled
I don't use my real name for my characters, but that might just be because I'm not a huge fan of my real name. I don't really get naming the love interest after a real-life crush, though.
>name fits in basically any setting
Feels good
>tfw when the Switch port has a word filter
>tfw no black mage Hitler
>no white mage princess Slut
>no Faggot Quina
>no FucBoi monkey boy
>no Cumgzlr loli summoner
>no BigDic Amarant
At least Steiner is perfect
Who Daniel Chads here
make my own
It's part of the story of FFIX, though. Garnet decides she needs an alias but can't think of a name, then she sees a dagger and says "What's this called? Dagger? Okay, that's good enough." I think we're kind of supposed to think it's stupid in this case, because it's someone making something up on the fly and going with the first thing they can think of.
DUDE WEED AHHHHH LMAO niggers amirite!?!? 1488 smoke up 420 hehehe
If you use anything except the canon names, even ones that are not provided by default, you are autistic and do not deserve the game you're playing. Give it to someone who will take it seriously.
my first plat of FFVII i had cloud as faggot, tifa as bitch, and barrett as nigga and i don't think i would have enjoyed the game otherwise
>qtpie22f
>Not qt31422f
lmao'ing @ seething-mad weeb's
fbpb, though second post fleshes it out better.
But basically that, if it's a story I'm following along and handling the gameplay with, even if it does have some branching choices, I stick with the defaults unless they're so retarded or such obvious bad translations that it's distracting. That's pretty rare these days though.
If it's fully custom then I try to come up with decent names that will work with the world so it won't break immersion every time they come up. I don't personally use any real people I know ever, I feel like it'd distract from having the characters do stuff I think fits even if it wouldn't fit what I'd do myself or anyone I know would do.
Yukiko would never
The correct name of this character is "Tina."
That's not a very feminine-sounding name, really, and most people probably don't know the Bible well enough to even know where it came from. Unfortunately, I imagine upon hearing that name, most people would think of pic related.
Nope, Terra is canon as it is used in all English FF material. Aerith is also canon.
it's pronounced yale
>Play JRPG where you can name each party member
>Give everyone the same name
SOMEBODY STOP ME
Ok, now I see the allure of renaming characters
>name protag after myself
>name best friend character after my dog
>name love interest after girl i have a crush on
>I stick with the defaults unless they're so retarded or such obvious bad translations that it's distracting. That's pretty rare these days though.
But when it did happen, my God did it stick out.
You're not Alexander.
I put their secret real name in chrono trigger
Glenn, nadia, etc
Well, that would make me think of pic related. But most people, not being Internet weirdos like me, would probably think of the university, so that's good.
Pokemon did it too for 3 generations
tis your birth and faith that wronged you not I
>tfw game lets you choose alternate names at random
>your name is one of them
Bob. Name them always Bob. Regardless of Gender name them Bob. Name more than 1 character? No problem Bobb and Bobbb are born.
>tfw my name isn't Bob
>Name? Ah, my serial number. It is R66-Y.
>No! That won't do at all! Come on Crono, let's give him a better name!
(rename Robo to R66-Y)
>R66-Y...R66-Y...that's perfect!
