That's Solid Snake, there are kojima drones to this day who refuse to believe he originally had blonde hair even though the game literally starts off with these tapes before the mission.

(Currently accepted mental gymnastics suggests it's the monochromatic colors of the tape, even though it doesn't make sense)

Also depending on how you look at it, it makes perfect sense that he, an elite special forces operator, acts like he's a total retard in the game, but more on that later when you start playing MGS 2.

OP here. Thanks, it'll all make sense later I guess. I'm glad I started watching with Metal Gear then Metal Gear 2 (I skipped Snake's Revenge). I like that the spray can and lighter weapon used to defeat Big Boss at the end of Metal Gear 2 is the basis of the story for Metal Gear Solid, when it was really just a quirky puzzle solution.

Yes, but the idea of Snake having a twin didn't even exist in those games. Liquid wasnt even a thought in Kojimas head. To drive home the point in MGS1 that Solid and Liquid are IDENTICAL twins Snake is there in the tapes with flowing blonde hair. Now it's possible that the video artists did this without Kojimas consent. It's more likely Kojima just didn't care about continuity with the older games, every single MGS game breaks continuity with last one anyway.

I think Solid Snake is the player character, and the "Colonel" is Colonel Campbell? No wait, that'd make Campbell the naked one. I dunno.

IMO the Otacon ending is way better -- For the game and for the series, until MGS 4 invalidates it.

The intro tapes are labelled "Briefing" for a reason.
ALSO the tapes as they're listed in the menu are not in chronological order. You can play them in order by watching the timer on the tapes.

Well originally they were going to have Solid Snake be blonde, but they decided not to in the end for some reason. I won't get any more specific or it'll spoil some stuff.
