How would you improve the Souls formula?
For me:
>iframes should be kept to a minimum to encourage combat based on positioning and reading the direction of swings/attacks
>useless filler equipment should be replaced by a smaller set of more distinct stuff,
>each move in a weapon's moveset should have a different purpose (like normal attack, breaking guard attack, poking for narrow corridors and so on), no variations of the same shit but slower or faster
>more useful utility items and spells for interacting with the environment and enemies, kind of like an immersive sim
How would you improve the Souls formula?
I would get rid of PvP and lore; that should filter all the undesirable elements from both the series itself and the fanbase.
Weapons that are actually unique and fun to use. Every thing in Dark Souls feels samey.
Monster Hunter World gets this right.
Based
Take DaS2 and make it not rushed, and that's how you improve the Souls formula.
I thought the weapons felt awful in monster hunter. The combat gives you no feedback at all, couldn't tell if I was hitting anything or not.
Not exactly.
Take Dark Souls 1's pre Lord Vessel world design and pre-Anor Londo level design
Take Dark Souls 2's approach to stats, build variety, power stance, covenants and environmental dangers
Take Dark Souls 3's enemy encounter and overal enemy design and polish
Take Dark Souls 1, 2's DLC and 3 boss design
And you'll have the perfect Souls game.
>less enemies more bosses.
>no level limit when invading up.
>can invade solo players just as much as groups
No other game i played has had a better weapon play style than Hammer from MH.
No warping until late-game.
Go back to the slower combat.
No sequels.
A full alternate moveset like the stance system from Nioh should replace weapon arts.
>erase dark souls 2
>either lower the number of spells or the effectiveness of magic to prevent twink invasions and babbehs that cheese the PvE
>less asset-reusing in each game, instead of constant "remember THIS location/character from the LAST one"
>diverse weapons and movesets, which prevents bottlenecking one or two types of builds
>all sorts of fun armors and costumes to encourage fashion and larping
>more waifushit
Dark Souls 1 had the best waifus
What a garbage post.
>No warping until late-game.
There is nothing worse than not having the freedom to travel through the world you've conquered so far. It's one of the things I hate the most when I replay 1.
>Go back to the slower combat.
Terrible. Slow =/= good in the same way fast =/= good
>No Sequels
2 and 3 are amazing games no matter how much Yea Forums memes about it.
>A full alternate moveset like the stance system from Nioh should replace weapon arts.
Ahahahahahahahaha
You never shut the fuck up about how much you despise Nioh and how it is a worthless piece of trash on every sense compared to Souls, and now you want to steal from it? Hypocrisy is thy name
Allow invaders to grief more. Talking about spells that permanently destroy equipment, aggroing NPCs/vendors, and Allant's level drain, etc. Invaders should have things stacked in their favor, and playing with humanity should be stressful as fuck. Losing against others should suck.
>less enemies
I hope you never ever make a game.
>erase Dark Souls 2
>But steal everything from it
>more waifushit
Just let us make attractive characters more easily.
This thread is fucking painful to read.
Fattie.
What's 2B doing in Lordran?
Griefing players was the most fun part of DS:
>Take Dark Souls 1, 2's DLC and 3 boss design
>3 boss design
Boss design in all these games are centered around the game's character speed anyway.
Disable iframes. The purpose of a roll should be to move your hitbox out of the way of any incoming damage, not to temporarily become invulnerable like Danny Phantom
>Do you want to connect to the Dark Souls servers?
>[ ] YES [ X ] NO
>You will play on singleplayer mode. Are you sure?
>[ X ] YES [ ] NO
>Do you want to make offline mode the default mode?
>[ X ] YES [ ] NO
>[ X ] NEVER ASK AGAIN
I unironically think the biggest mistake in the series is that you are able to run past enemies.
Taking the design of the game into a whole, it's clear that enemy gauntlets are taken into account when balancing estus economy. It's really simple - each time you die, you get better fighting the mobs, and you are then rewarded with an extra estus or two for the boss. For this reason I think it's a mistake to consider the boss and the gauntlet as two separate design entities.
What then happens is that players complain about repeating content, when the truth is that they merely survived it by happenstance. Maybe that's good enough for players, but it does not mean they mastered it. You can do one of two things
1.) Let go of the pretense of a boss gauntlet, and give respawns near the fog gate no questions asked
2.) Force enemy encounters, and when the player performs well, offer them rewards in an explicit way most players will understand. An incentive that balances the risk.
I think Sekiro realizes this fact which is why they are implementing the revival mechanic.
They could take the next step and remove rolling, just keeping the hopping dodge. Making little adjustments to positioning while looking for openings is way more satisfying than rolling a kilometer away from your opponent at the slightest sight of danger.
If a game should be made this way though, they probably would need to get rid of gank fights entirely or come up with better camera and targetings systems. It would be cool if you had crow control tools for this kind of situation, like pushing enemies into each other.
>Dark Souls 1 had the best waifus
Quelaag or Priscilla?
Don't Sekiro have spawns right next to the fog gate though? Or I just fell for the shitposting?
this might work if invaders couldn't use magic or buffs
nu-souls players need to be killed
Yeah basically make a Dark Souls 2 that actually did everything right
we need cuter characters AND cuter players
>How would you improve the Souls formula?
Souls battle royale.
I know you're memeing, but they really need this shit for the Switch version. I refuse to pay for Nintendo Online, but every fucking time I start the game they ask me if I want to join.
A launcher and juggle combos
No, I'm not memeing.
The moment that invaders get that much power, that's the moment when people will either stop playing online or playing the game at all.
The first month of the PC version of Remastered was pretty much what that asshole was wishing thanks to hacks and exploits. And guess what? The game died in the blink of an eye.
>Don't Sekiro have spawns right next to the fog gate though?
Kek no. You die you go back to the last idol (bonfire).
holy shit you're a faggot
>There is nothing worse than not having the freedom to travel through the world you've conquered so far. It's one of the things I hate the most when I replay 1.
you do have the freedom you retarded faggot. you have your legs. what the fuck is even the point of having a connected world if you warp everywhere
>cuter characters
The custom NPCs (not the ones made from the Oblivion character generator) are already great looking though. Some of them, like Quelaag and Andre, even have facial/mouth animations.
Nothing more sexy then a hot ladyknight in realistic plate.
Oh yeah, it's so fucking enjoyable to have to walk back to Andre every time I want to upgrade a weapon that I wanted for a particular build that only appears four maps later.
It's a pointless waste of time.
>What the fuck is even the point of having a connected world if you warp everywhere
Who says that the world needs to be interconnected? This isn't Symphony of the Night, and that one had save point teleports.
>Forced PVP, not invasions but two random players in the same area must fight and only one may progress.
>More emphasis on strength weapons
>Big fat armor sets that have a tangible effect, bring back poise from das1 but make it more effective
>Harder bosses
>Delete magic
>DS1 comes out
>praised as the best thing since sliced bread
>DS2 comes out, with improvements on everything, and is more challenging for people who have played DS1
>Yea Forums hates it
Really makes me think
>passive poise
what a joke
With drawbacks of course, you need to be a tubby fuck if you want that poise.
Imagine having this much of a shit taste
Nice try Havel
>realistic plate.
>fur collar
>leather swordhand glove
>shitty belts that hold nothing
>no helmet
>ladyknight
>>>realistic
NO MORE SEATH NIGGER BABBLE
DSII had many, many game play improvements, but DS is more than just bashing things. DSII was just nowhere near as fun or interesting to explore or travel through, and the enemy encounters sucked. Tellingly, that's why all the PVEfags take dumps of DSII, while the PVPfags all love it for the game play improvements.
find a new publisher that will actually give the time/funding needed to finish the game
either remove pvp or stop fucking up pve builds to balance pvp
increase build and equipment variety, bring back power stancing
don't pull another dark souls 3 where half the game is just references to dark souls 1
So Bloodborne? lol....
Have the focus on defense instead of fast rolls, add positional blocking and maybe a duck option. The initial selling point for DS1 (and later Nioh) was the weaponry and relatively grounded combat. I'd love for it to focus on hitboxes and attack angles instead of the iframe dodging of the newer souls games.
maybe if you play faggy shit like dual swords, try using the hammer and tell me all the hitstop, enemy stun and meaty sound effects feel awful
>remove one of the things that made ds1 as good as it is
>perfect souls game
??
yeah two or three actually have moving mouths but very few are as cute as priscilla, quelaag, her sister, or patches
>ladyknight
>realistic
kys game of thrones fanboy
>>Forced PVP, not invasions but two random players in the same area must fight and only one may progress.
for an optional area that would be fucking GOAT
>don't pull another dark souls 3 where half the game is just references to dark souls 1
Are you fucking serious? Fanservice is a bad thing now? Continuation of the narrative and lore is a bad thing? Holy fuck.
fuck off hbomberfag, your ass was pounded into submission by the CHAD MAULER
youtube.com
increase armor slots, so for example boots and pants aren't just one slot but rather two, three if you factor in a belt
I liked DS2's PvE even.
My only big complaint is how linear the world is and how much the teleportation system is needed to traverse it. Should have been a lot more hub zones and warping be limited to later in the game, like in 1.
Also having to talk to an NPC to level was annoying, but 3 didn't exactly fix either of those issues.
So which is better: passive poise or the hypermour health system in DaS3? I seriously can't decide.
Honestly it's his only idea I really like.
Can just imagine pushing towards a boss, enter a colliseum and he locks the gates. Another player on the other side, boss gives some shitty ds boss speech, only the winner gets to challenge him. No bonfir between the player fight and boss figjt
>for an optional area that would be fucking GOAT
No, I want it to be relentless.
You have to struggle through the entire game constantly fighting people, survival of the fittest.
>You're 28 minutes into the suffering mines, you've killed 3 players and eaten their life force refilling your healing items
>A lone man with 9 skulls above his head indicating that he has seen some shit on the way here waits for you on the bridge of death, neither of you can progress to the boss room until this is over
youtu.be
Positional attacks with a more fleshed out armor system like you said would be perfect. Imagine if a hit to the head calculated the damage only based on the defense of your head piece instead of having a flat body defense. Different shield shapes would be beneficial to different weapon types/areas, and you could go light on more defended body parts (for example the chest piece if you're using a tower shield).
Fuck you guys. Why do we need more "hot" characters? The ugliness of souls PCs really helps with the overall atmosphere of shit and decay.
a greater focus on environments and the road to the boss rather than the boss a la DeS
remove poise forever
stop balancing weapons for pvp fairness and generally allow pvp to be broken as shit
The Surge did something like this, you could target different body parts.
if everything is ugly then it is meaningless. for there to be conflict and a sense of decay, then there needs to be something beautiful at risk... or even responsible
I dunno
>first person gameplay?
I'm sure a lot of people will disagree, but I think that adding more variety to the players movements would be a very nice change. Being able to have different types of doges, an actual jump and a way to climb parts of the environment could allow for more variety in the level design and could vary up the combat quite nicely. They should also clean up collision meshes and add the ability for all enemies/phantoms to hit each other so attacks don't clip through walls and npcs. Other than that I just want to see actual new content instead of reused assets from the previous games.
Kind of, but even then it was just lock-on to different body parts. You didn't need to take into account whether you used a horizontal or vertical swing.
there was some choice in movement depending on what you wore, for example a ring in the first game that let you do cartwheels instead of rolls, and wearing heavy armor would slow you
>remove poise forever
fuck you
I enjoy broken pvp so long as it doesnt devolve into everyone using the same thing because a specific set of items blow everything else out of the water
>looking at you purple dildo and pushlock
Actually I'm pretty sure using certain attacks could hit specific body parts even when unlocked
The system could easily be changed to allow for this in any case
Also Demon's Souls had ledge mantling but it was only ever used in a few places
Kinda like for honor, but with dam based on where you hit?
The surge tried to implement jumping as a dodge option, but it was underutilised and rarely a beneficial choice. It'd be interesting to have a couple of aerial moves only accessible from jumps to use as a punish, kind of like while rising moves in Tekken. Have them as strong single-attack punishes, and the player can also neutral jump into them as a risky heavy hit or a surprise attack from a higher ledge.
Oh I know, the dark wood grain ring is one of my favorite items, I just meant that having even more things like that could really help freshen up the formula.
I actually lost braincells watching this pretentious shit.
20 minutes in and he's still dissecting quotes about "fun level" for mechanics such as healing.
Does this guy upload videos not expecting anyone to actually listen to what he's saying?
Add an online multiplayer filter that locked people out from joining your session. Like say you could limit int so no one with int higher than 20 can join.So cheap ass magic users can't show up and cheese their way to victory
user you need to save as many brain cells as you can! don't keep watching it!!
those weren't necessary better than things like estoc, BBS light weapon, greataxe etc
He goes sentence by sentence using his high levels of autism and absolutely rapes hbomber's pathetic defense of DkS2. hbomber should have stuck to making fun of Fallout 3, an easy target.
Yeah. There'd also need to be some kind of adjustment to the lock-on system to compensate (I don't think they should follow the For Honor close camera 1v1 style since it would suck for groups). Ideally I'd make some adjustments to the controls so lock on is less essential, or have the lock-on looser so you're not always facing the opponent and hit/hold a button to "click" back to facing them or something.
he was right though. he's mainly just exposing how hbomber is a fag who says vague opinionated useless shit
A fucking map
>game comes with a map
>it's outdated and unusable
timefags would shit their convoluted pants if this happened
not important at all
It'd actually be pretty cool. Have the changes relate in some way to the story, and design it in a way that the player can annotate any changes themselves as they go including shortcuts.
>A fucking map
>In a Souls game
Never fucking ever.
As someone who has about an hour a fortnight to spare on gaming, a map would actually be invaluable for me, to remember where I was supposed to be going
I realize that the omission of a map must've been a conscious decision, but it's really fucking frustrating
On a side note, does the map in the mansion in DS2 function as a map in any real way? I only played it once and can't remember
>ds3 fags
frankly, make every weapon trick weapons. Outside of boss battles in BB I used my weapons entire moveset. R1, R2, jump Rs, backstep Rs, combos with L1 trick switches etc.
I dunno, I couldn't imagine having to deal with say Orphan of Kos if I had to run through the gauntlet every time. My first time was on NG+ and it was the first souls boss I needed 10-20 tries on, I couldn't have kept it up if I had to run a gauntlet of enemies every time.
When I first got in to souls the Kappra demon was wrecking my shit since the beginning was so dependent on dodging the dogs. Until I found the shortcut I was at my wits end running the gauntlet every time. I got good at it and all but still.
They just need to make it where you can't run past enemies but can discover clever shortcuts for each boss more like DS1
Dragon > Spider
And the best boy also
I can see where your coming from with this, as I utilized my full move set more frequently in BB than I did in DS, but I don't want every weapon to be a trick weapon. I think it would be far more interesting if they chaotically threw them into the mix with all the non trick weapons.
Maps are cool. No reason not to include them.
I honestly prefer the I frame dodging, they just need to make it less spammable. There is no better feeling than hitting that perfect I frame on an attack that would kill you.
I think you forgot someone.
The world used to be glorious, but there's no remain of that, so i would say that ugly characters fit better
Amazing chest ahead
true, true, and even in BB they had a few weapons who's trick was more of a temporary power up. But in DS on my dex builds I just find myself only using 2h R1s because it's just more safe and efficient.
Haven't gotten to DS3 yet so we'll see how that game goes.
PvP is fine, just continue to put invaders at a disadvantage or make a pvp arena completely outside of PvE. Maybe you can import characters to it from PvE and join different scenarios. (duels, 2v2, etc.)
I hate PvPfags as much as the next guy but there is something incredibly rewarding about bodying them with your PvE build when they're so obviously going for minmax with their edgelord fashionsouls.
An UI that isn't shit
Not that guy, but having a map in Dark souls wouldn't work very well. A lot of the areas are actually placed very close to each other despite not actually connecting at all. The areas also have a lot of varying elevations. So ultimately you would end up with a very disorientating map.
Same formula but the game is set on a massive sci-fi space complex and the levels are different floors/wings that players can roam to catch other wanderers. Customizations are cybernetic implants, energy armor/weapons, 3D printed garb, etc. Aliens, genetically modified monsters, and mind-shattered, cybernetically-enhanced crewmen are your enemies. No I-frames for rolling, but certain abilities can make you avoid damage if timed correctly. Game has a greater focus on sound and horror; most of the spaces are tight and claustrophobic. Summons are robotic companions you can customize that have their own AI, and you summon other players by uploading brains into robotic shells that they control
>First half of DaS level design with many branching paths designed specifically for different builds to encourage multiple playthroughs (BB's is also great, feels very compact, but I just played it for the first time so I need more playtime to really say one way or the other about it.)
>A good mix of varied bosses, including a small amount of ones with gimmicks. Obviously not too many of the latter, like DeS suffers from, but enough to at least make your first playthrough more than jut Big Humanoid with Epic Huge Sword #37.
>I agree with OP in a smaller amount of items with more distinct uses
>lower threshold for efficient builds that can also use spells, at least for basic ones, but for mastery require a big investment. I always feel overleveled if I want a sword & board character with any sort of spell support.
There's probably more. Tbqh with you lads, the series scratches a ton of itches for me as is and compared to most AAA modern games.
the ancient gods remained in the ruined world though
I'm curious, why a map? The games are actually fairly linear, even the shortcuts are not some huge divergence from areas you can literally see before their unlocks. Being able to see a map would be a huge spoiler if you ask me, friendo. Any seasoned player would be able to spot potential pincers and boss areas and off-shoot paths to items immediately.
mite b cool
Did you play The Surge? Similar in some ways to your description. Unfortunately it's a piece of shit for the most part, but your game sounds cool.
So I can look at it later and think "damn this looks cool."
Let me show you a nice trick then, user.
google.com
>less enemies
go play monster hunter faggot and then kys
and are the few waifus we have left
Fuck that, it should be available from the game itself.
would you link the fire to make your waifu smile?
Maybe some of that is in an artbook of some sorts for you? I dunno user, it seems an autistic thing to get hung up upon.
I'm not hung up on it. All I'm saying is that it'd be a neat thing to have. If anything the people disagreeing with it and bringing up stupid shit about game design are the autistic ones.
>add FLAILS
>add DECAPITATION/DISMEMBERMENT
>make bows/crossbows an actual viable weapon class and not just a gimmick utility
>return to Dark souls 1 stamina system but keep everything else DaS3 introduced
And just like that DaS3 becomes the undispurlted GOAYT ARPG
>If anything the people disagreeing with it and bringing up stupid shit about game design
I guess it depends on what kind of map you mean. Your last few posts have made it sound like you want a large print or something for a map. If you want an in-game one, I think that's pretty hard to deny that changes quite a bit of things about the series' game design.
See
moar weapons and armor.
The maps could only be unlocked after an area is completed. They could be locked away in their own little area like the bonfire "map" in DS2. They could only be used while resting at a bonfire. They could exist in universe and be poorly drawn/inaccurate. There's a ton of ways to incorporate maps without infringing on the gameplay.
also more cool and unique enviorments and enemies. DS3 felt kinda bland everything was so similar. we need more abominations and acid trip like environments less grey nothingness and boring reused forests
Gears of war style exexutions that you can perform on other players. Pretty much anything that lets invaders shit over the hosts life is a good addition.
>invade. And cheese rhe shit out of host
>kneel over him and punch him in the face for 25 seconds before crushing his skull
Shit would be so goddamn funny.
>I'm an ADHD fuck therefore this detailed and objectively correct analysis is dumb and stupid
literally you
I would add weapon-poise where you can block certain things with your weapon and not take damage, so say you have a long sword, an enemy swings a regular sized sword at you, you can deflect it and not take damage, but if they swing a fuckhuge great hammer and you try to block it, or they come at you from an angle, it will break your poise and do damage
literally dark souls 2 parrying
ok well do the same thing but in a game with levels i actually want to replay and bosses that are fun
>Allow invaders to grief more.
This. Fucking twinking was one of the most defining features of DSI. It really made it feel like the world didn't give a shit about you and was kicking you 100 ft down for every step you took back up. Really contributed to the oppressive atmosphere.
A literal stupid bitch. No thanks.
>I would kill the game because people i dont like enjoy it
It's a good thing jaded NEETs like you stay unemployed
>get rid of bonfire teleportation, more shortcuts, more metroidvania
