it's the best platformer I have ever played by far.

I don't know why, but as a kid I was really terrified of confronting the evil pigs. Maybe the build up was just good enough to scare a kid. Then they're just comic relief.

This stupid theme playing in every conversation, voice acting, and zippo in general are the only flaws of 2.

People generally don't hate 2, they just hate certain things about 2. Usually some of the music and most of the voice acting.

it's not the voice acting and music itself, it's the goddamn audio mixing, the volume is all over the place, dialogue and specific tracks suddenly jump up to floor vibrating levels

I miss that era of all those experimental and weird games back during the PS1/PS2 era. Feels like today there's so much less of that and a lot more playing it safe except in indie circles, and those are a lot more hit and miss than what we used to get. I'm trying out a lot of games I skipped out on during those gens now, and even the stuff that got lambasted as shit back then is pretty serviceable or has redeeming qualities out the ass.

my only criticism would be that there's some quests that are either never directly explained how to start (baby pig), and that there's a hard difficulty spike after dwarf village/mushroom forest.
Otherwise very solid game. One of the best.

Tomba 1 and 2 seem like a fever dream, Back when I played them as a kid I had never played a metroidvania game before and had nothing to compare them to so when I tried to describe the game other kids seemed to think I was making it up.

I'd imagine most kids would get lost quick after clearing dwarf village.
My zoomer brother.kept dying at phoenix mountained and reached game over.
I picked it up to show him how to clear it and ended up finishing it in an afternoon with 35 lives.
It's just great fun zero bullshit.
Localization is surprisingly great as well.
