The Sonic Mania guys had to ask Sega to be stuck on port duty for five years before Mania was even announced, and Sega is WAY more friendly towards its gaijin fans than Nintendo

To be fair, the first one had a shitty controller and the remake was tied to a handheld with a shitty gimmick and garbage controls
There are a few differences between this mess and Taxman and Stealth's work on Mania:
-Taxman and Stealth made their own physics engine for Mania which they used for the mobile ports.
-When they presented Mania to Sega, they had an original level already playable and done with original assets and code, unlike the asset flipper in the video
-Taxman and Stealth are capable of actually making a good fangame
