Actual best jrpg coming through.
posting JRPG kino.
This is one the cringiest games I have ever played. Weebs have ruined jrpgs.
One of my personal faves.
>video game
>kino
Stop using words you don't understand.
2 is better, especially now that we got the retranslation patch released.
This is with the one guy using a lizard as a loin cloth?
Will do
None of these are FF7, so you're all objectively wrong.
Prototype Chrono Trigger. Actually pretty good though.
i don't know if i was too young or just a brainlet but i started with the ninja and couldn't figure out the battle system
Ostred did nothing wrong!
You’re all wrong
ff7 is shit compared to most megaten games.
I'm surprised this didn't get some kind of updated re-release down the line or something.
Did he fuck a little girl?
this
hello newfag
Only correct opinion in this thread so far.
Didn't play it but that's a damn good cover art
>mfw Martial Arts chapter and your student masters the ultimate move against the final boss
youtube.com
Too hard for notoriously casual JRPG audience in it for the story. In fact, it's kinda sad that SaGa games in general "break the mold" by being difficult largely by simply not insulting the players' intelligence. They merely expect you to pay attention and learn how to use game systems properly.
Game forever ruined by its association to Chrono Trigger and fanboys fanboying. What a shame.
>Game forever ruined by its association to Chrono Trigger and fanboys fanboying
>not ruined by the fact that all the characters being shit and too many, battles being slow as fuck and the story being nonsense that spits on Chrono Trigger
Yeah okay
I played this game many times but finally beat it last summer. I love this game.
>They merely expect you to pay attention and learn how to use game systems properly.
That's being generous and you know it. More often than not it's because you're expected to play them with one hand tied behind your back because the games barely tell you shit.
t. contrarians
>tfw medieval chapter
You're not wrong. Unlimited SaGa needed a fucking phone book sized manual when it originally came out in Japan, and the American release got a measly 15 page one where half of it wasted pages telling you how to turn the console on.
I think it should. At least for the sake of an international release
t. plebian
This game sucks ass
Best JRPG coming through
>that ost
What is this?
Aside from the good box art i've always this game was just bad
Is live a live supposed to be hard? I tried playing it and got my ass kicked
I'm sorry, but were you ever nominated for GotY?
>wahhhhh games with similar themes are shit, I wanted a full blown sequel
The games after Unlimited proved that even having in game manuals meant nothing, most people are just too dumb to understand the basics, which is all that matters really.
You can ignore most mechanics at play in SaGa games as long as you understand that you ARE supposed to pay attention to how you play at a basic level, rather than knowing all the subtle intricacies that are there mostly for roleplaying purposes and self challenge.
Hell you can autopilot throw Unlimited with basic bow commands if you want, it's not that hard to get unless you don't want to listen to what the games tell you and you don't pay attention to what happens when you do something and its consequences, which I'm afraid is too much for the average RPG audience in general, not just the notoriously low standard JRPG crowd, most WRPG fans don't get SaGa games either.
>Ungaaa! Um only play de gaymes wit de generic animu whores
This thread in a nutshell.
Get off Yea Forums, Alex
Keep in mind most JRPGs can basically be played by choosing ATTACK and grinding levels high enough. Compared to that SaGa games are rocket science. Shit, SMT blows most people away.
are we pretending gotys are anything but popularity contests? of course new persona would qualify.
Good job not reading the thread at all m8. What a waste of quads.
Where is the full art of all the characters?
>blocks your layup
I plan on playing FF9 for the first time all the way through this year Yea Forumsros, what am I in for? Probably gonna start soon after DMCV is done

I always liked his choice here
>The games after Unlimited
Which ones? Re-releases?
I think only Saga games that were REALLY obscure were Saga Frontier and first Romancing Saga.
Play Mystic Ark
Golden Sun is better
>Shit, SMT blows most people away.
Yeah, I noticed that in the later years SMT has garnered some kind of hardcore aura around here despite its actual merits, I guess that with the recent fall from grace of FF for the 80's/90's generation of players SMT is becoming kind of a substitute for that kind of entry level gameplay that is touted as the best thing ever.
>Which ones?
Minstrel Song, the two DS remakes, Scarlet Grace, even TLR.
Complete garbage that Japan hates and killed the Mother franchise.
Nothing wrong with playing games because they have anime girls in it
>Japan hates
Where did this meme come from?
SMT's claim to fame is basically "whoa dude, status effects matter".
This is the only must-play game I can think of. It is a celebration of the Planet Earth.
I can't take anyone seriously who hasn't played it all the way through.
Oersted did nothing wrong
Get the PC version, and use the Memoria mod. Speeding up battles will increase your enjoyment of the game considerably.
I liked how varied Live A Live was.
>dat blue mage wrestler chapter
>dat sunset kid "gotta set up traps" chapter
>dat straight up adventure robot chapter
>dat optional stealth ninja chapter
I thought it was turn control
a man of taste
Terranigma's ending is a goddamn tearjerker. I suspect not getting released in the US seriously limited how many players enjoyed the game back in the day, though.
>most WRPG fans don't get SaGa games either.
Because contrary to what Saga Fans like to believe, SaGa games are not all that different from your typical jrpg. They still lack the interactivity that distinguishes wrpgs from jrpgs.
The battle system is infinitely better and isn't the spamfest of Trigger. The main characters are infinitely more developed than Trigger and only manchildren are still crying over Cross for not doing what they wanted the game to be. Grow up
True.
Best game on the SNES and so far ahead of its time its not funny anymore.
Only reason CT is hyped as system best is because the US never got Terranigma.
Man I've always wanted to play this one
Not style, atmosphere, music?
Go for it, it’s fully translated now
>Best game on the SNES and so far ahead of its time its not funny anymore.
Best description ever. Even just the intro that plays before you start feels like it came out of a PS4 epic.
Favorite game next to Characters, atmosphere, world design and music were top fucking notch.
>Because contrary to what Saga Fans like to believe, SaGa games are not all that different from your typical jrpg.
I don't think anyone is debating that, though. SaGa games are different from other JRPGs in how they're tuned aka not a complete cakewalk storyfags get to play through without some sort of a guide. That's really more due to how JRPGs as a whole have taken a turn. I'd imagine modern JRPG fan would have problems with older Dragon Quests as well.
Terranigma would in general get a lot more respect and praise if it had released in the US. Damn shame really.
I still hold VIII in high regard, which is odd because the other FFs fell out of favor with me HARD. Especially VII and X. It's just way more interesting to muse about.
Golden Zoom is baby's first jrpg.
Not even snes games are that generic.
Never would have happened. The game just beats you over the head so much with religion, the world's creation, concepts of heaven/hell in a time when the cross subweapon had to be replaced with axes.
Kill yourself wrpg-kun
This game is so fucking good its not funny anymore and I dont think I've ever seen a game that does the death/rebirth circle theme as well as this one.
Also
>dat little lion's theme
Shit, I forgot the name of it but I remember it's really good.
Fuck off, WRPGkun.
>Kill yourself wrpg-kun
>posts make factual observations between the differences between jrpgs and wrpgs
>doesn't even insult jrpgs or imply they are easier than wrpgs, just makes factual observations
>jrpg fans go into a psychotic frenzy
Calm your tits (or lack thereof), you buttblasted weeb.
Kill yourself already
>WRPG fag posting Family Guy
Not sure why anyone is falling for this shitty bait.
fuck unlimited
Faggots like you responding and feeding it are just as bad.
Reminder to not reply to WRPG-Kun, hide, sage and report.
The moment you give him even a single (You) any thread goes to shit.
Oh shit seriously? Time to start looking around then.
Been ages since I played a good JRPG, aside from bravely default. I thought maybe it would spark a new era for the genre but all we got instead was the same crap as usual.
>I thought maybe it would spark a new era for the genre
Seriously? It was always going to be a niche homage to old job-based FFs.
youtube.com
I have this tune in my head for 20years
nigga please
Based.
Maybe not best ever because its really flawed but what it does well it does unbelievably well. Music, art direction, story concepts, atmosphere. Pure kino.
Currently playing pic related though and the more I play it the more I love it. Just got to Shevat, really reminds me of the mystic age in Chrono Trigger.
But it fixed turn based combat with the brave and default system. I feel dirty playing any other JRPG now where I revive a character, and they get whacked before my other character can throw a potion.
I thought Stella Glow was pretty decent. Felt like a good way to start playing TRPGs
Terranigma bros will forever be my homies, no matter who you are or where you are in life.
Nothing else comes close. A truly unique game.
I still remember how it blew my mind when humans were created again and you lost the ability to speak to animals because humanity focused on their own progress and shit
whant to fuck the one with the horns
I'm just saying, you placed some high expectations on the game that the game was never trying to live up to to begin with.
>But it fixed turn based combat with the brave and default system. I feel dirty playing any other JRPG now where I revive a character, and they get whacked before my other character can throw a potion.
>handholding systems that remove challenge and tactics
>"fixed turn based combat"
If you don't an enemy to whack a character before you can heal them, how about *GASP* planning in advance? Stun that enemy, throw up a protective barrier, whatever.
Not the best but Live-a-Live is absolutely fucking based. Square left too much good shit in Japan
>let's ruin Chrono Trigger: The Game
>best
lol
Isnt that the game that showed the dangers of communism?
Iirc there you could help develop towns in the game with certain events and items and one french town had a mayor contest with two people:
>a nerd who studied economy and didn't really know people that well who was focused on progress and numbers
>and a hobo who didn't know economy well but said he loves the people in his town and would never let any harm come to them
and if you chose the red haired hobo then the city would never develop past a certain stage
there was more to it even but this is like more than a decade ago.
>ruin
You're way too attached to games if you think a loosely based sequel can ruin a prequel.
Just ignore if you dont like CC, one of the very few games that got 10/10 reviews in a time where reviews weren't shit
Because turn orders where rand-- oh, you weren't alive back them to know that, were you? Run along now, zoom zoom.
>if you think a loosely based sequel
it's a direct sequel.
>direct sequel
>only connection is right at the end
No it isnt you reddit spacing retard. Its a direct sequel of radical dreamers. And even if it was direct sequel, youd still have to be autistic to let it ruin the first game.
If star wars fans, aka the worst fanbase on planet earth can pretend the prequels never existed to not ruin their enjoyment, then you have no excuse for being this autistic.
>Because turn orders where rand
What are you talking about? Since the dawn of tiem, turn order in turn-based RPGs has been determined by your character's speed stat, or some equivalent.
>Puts off Sci-fi chapter til the very end since I thought it looked super lame
>Ends up with it being one of my favorite chapters in the game
I miss Squaresoft, I should replay this sometime.
+1 for terranigma and chrono cross
I need to get around playing live a live tho
Oh sorry, Radiant Historia for DS, please go on right ahead.
>Live-A-Live

Is there anyone who was actually happy about the merger? Both companies only lost in terms of creativity and quality.
Oersted did nothing wrong ;_;
The only series to come out unscathed from the merger was Dragon Quest and SaGa
I’d say Front Mission but that barely counts as its been dead in the water for years now
>dat Sci-fi horror chapter
Wasn't expecting that when I played it blind the first time.
The Wrestling, Kung Fu and Caveman chapters were great too
The Ninja chapter exposed how much of a brainlet I actually am though considering I followed a guide to get 100 kills and STILL fucking missed one; at least Oboro became a fucking tank of a tank in the final chapter as I played him
>tfw Oersted starts to speak
>that font change mid sentence
You can pinpoint the moment he finally lose hope in the world.
Based and red(hehe)pilled
the game is an absolute mess mate. Battle system, story, it all pales in comparison to Chrono Trigger. Hell, it shouldn't even have the name "Chrono" in it. It was an embarrassment to the franchise held up by kids here who started with PS1 era JRPGs.
Everything fucking clicked for me as soon as that happened and everything afterwards was just one big despair conga line
the poor fucking guy
It sort of expects you to know how the combat works right off the bat if you do any of the combat heavy chapters, Cube's is a good start because you have a heal and the minigame to learn how shit works.
weeb manchildren that can't understand satire, don't want to accept that the whole world hates america and only want moe in their jrpg
>higher rating in Japan than Trigger
>only game to get a full 10 on Gamespot at the time
>favorite of many industry figures
Stay mad plebman
>comparing wrpg to jrpg
people are insulting you, other then being retarded undagedb&/manchildren from Yea Forums or /jp/, also because they are very different genres with very different purposes and can't possibly be compared.
>held up by kids here who started with PS1 era JRPGs
what a weird way to say that CT is only hyped out of proportion by nostalgia fueled neckbeards
*Blocks your path*
Do you play hidden gems Yea Forums?
Together with Chrono Cross, this is certainly my favorite jrpg of all time.
God PSX was such a good console to live through at the time.
Bahamut Lagoon is nothing compared to Live A Live's NTR. Shit hit so hard the world was fucked after. Whats great here is if you take your time in Akira's dungeon in the final chapter, the princess and the traitor Straybow was put into eternal damnation and those two hoped that the team can save Oersted from his despair. This is what happened when a white knight gets fucked by his allies, his love and the world.
the NES section should be played only if you have an historical interest in the origin of the mechanics of the jrpg or if you really love the taste of grind, bad writing and bad translations in your arse
If you consider Glory of Heracles DS a hidden gem, then yes.
>if you read Straybow's mind in the final chapter he thinks that maybe he might've gone too far
>maybe
>after quite literally staging a plot to completely fuck him over and turn the entire kingdom against him over princess pussy
that guy was such a rat and i'm glad you got to kick his ass in the end anyway
oersted deserved better than those two
Yoyo was just a generic THOT, Byuu was better off no getting with her. She played Byuu, Palpaleos(who is a fucking bro), and even that massive shithead Matelite.
Orested was completely fucked over by his best friend, and his true love who were his most trusted allies to boot and sent him down a what should have been world ending torrent of despair...
I still remember being hugely disappointed by FF7 after loving FF3(6). I have no idea why people love that game so much. Was it your first JRPG?
I'm surprised to see an actual good answer in this thread.
yuh, real nice shit. Arland has nothing on those games.
youtube.com
user that's a guy.
That's mostly because both DQ and SaGa have always been carefully handled and safeguarded by their respective creators, which helped keep up a high standard of quality and identity, the merger has little to do with it.
FM began to have problems before the merger for instance, because they fucked over the original dev team really hard after FM2 and then the series ended with 5 for all intents and purposes.
FF began to have problems the moment the original team behind it disbanded after FFII and left it in the hand of a director who was completely clueless and just made it a generic story focused JRPG with focus on graphics more than anything else, which only helps you so far as the series is forced to always find new gimmicks to appeal to an ever shifting audience instead of a dedicated fanbase.
Mana (and SaGa) began to have problems when Square decided that only FF mattered, which is well before the merger, then the original creator ran out of ideas and got more and more ostracized until he got fed up and left, much like a lot of Square employees did starting from the late 90's.
As for ENIX, they've always been publishers more than actual developers, so it's hard to make any real argument about supposed lack of quality when they didn't really own anything outside of DQ, you can't do the same for people like Tri-Ace either, even when they got temporarily under Square's wing, their failures were restricted to Star Ocean while their other franchises and new IPs were solid, although hurt by the lack of advertisement.
The merger, and the modern information networks, only made Square's lack of management and exec incompetence more known, the ever so mystified "exodus" of talented staff had been an ongoing problem since the late 90's, and while it did hurt the output of the company by the mid/late 00's it wasn't really that much of a deciding factor, the real deal is that the marketing spell Square put people under in the previous decade simply broke.
If you dont agree that Xenogears is the best jrpg ever, even in its inperfect state, you are objectively wrong.
And what did Oersted find in the end after he successfully destroyed the world over assuming the Armageddon is a success?
Nothing. Only emptiness remains. Damn even if he wins, he still lose in the end.
The man is despair incarnate that you will came on your despair induced boner.
How far did you get in FF7?
Squeenix was surprised Bravely Default did as well as it did. Those niggas are completely out of touch with their flagship genre. DQ11 was traditionally DQ and they won't mess with that, but look at FF15 and what is clearly chasing the western audience.
user if you'll excuse me. There, done.
It's been a long time so I'm not sure exactly, but I admitt I did not finish it. I got out of Midgar and I watched a few of my friends play through later parts.
I think the tide finally turned for Suikoden 2. It's basically been an underrated as fuck JRPG on a system renowned for JRPGs and continually got overshadowed by bigger names. It's in Top 10 PS1 JRPGs easily.
The were also very pleased with the performance of Octopath Traveller and today said they were working on more of it.
Front Mission is STILL probably the best example ever of a franchise getting good closure. In a way I'm glad it's over, spin-offs be damned.
>I think the tide finally turned for Suikoden 2. It's basically been an underrated as fuck JRPG on a system renowned for JRPGs and continually got overshadowed by bigger names. It's in Top 10 PS1 JRPGs easily.
It wasn't even the best RPG with that premise (recruit a ragtag army to free a country from tyrannical rule) in the YEAR it came out
If anything, it's ridiculously overrated.
>and today said they were working on more of it.
I thought a sequel was in the works for a while now?
>when they didn't really own anything outside of DQ
while true, Enix is a good example of second party developments. Quintet for example never made a game not published by Enix.
Enix always kept its companies in close friendship.
It was like an Enix family
>That Zombie village twist
Freaked me the fuck out.
I think if you like Suikoden 2 then 5 is worth trying. It was something of a return to form other than the outrageously long "intro" section.
>Jagged Alliance 2
>WRPG
Nigga, please. At least be honest with yourself if you can't with me. There's a reason why we have sub-genres.
I'm a big JA2 fan and 2/3 of the cast is literally useless, and almost none of them have distinct and memorable personalities, despite the fact that they literally have only a couple of throwaway lines they use in combat.
you are such a stupid troll
Say a better JRPG franchise
Protip: You can't
>Nigga, please. At least be honest with yourself if you can't with me. There's a reason why we have sub-genres.
How is Jagged Alliance 2 not a wrpg? IT literally has the same gameplay loop as something like Baldur's Gate: recruit a party of whacky characters and travel from town to town while killing enemies and getting better gear.
It's not like other SRPGs where it's just a series of missions, it's a fully explorable open world. It even has an airship (well, helicopter) for overworld travel.
Why no one has posted Kiseki/Trails?
I want to bully whoever ut does.
not him but its a tactics game with squad management and some light rpg elements.
on the flipside fm5 is the kind of game where you basically need extensive franchise experience to get everything it packs in
Referring to this story from today.
Friendly reminder:
>same gameplay loop as something like Baldur's Gate: recruit a party of whacky characters and travel from town to town while killing enemies and getting better gear.
I'm starting to believe you haven't actually played any game you meme about and just looked up wikipedia pages or 5min youtube vids to make your shitty, overgeneralized images.
That, or you are just an idiot.
My bad, I don't frequent this place enough to realize the guy even exists.
>not him but its a tactics game with squad management and some light rpg elements.
>more rpg elements than any jrpg in existence
>"light" rpg elements
What is your qualification of 'heavy' rpg elements then?
From a wizard of oz game apparently.
>that you have no reason to ever use in combat
except for the fact that most of them have a storyline to complete and require you to have in your party, or the fact that they're actually good combat members that fit your team.
as much as I like JA2, all the characters are hollywood action movie stereotypes with cheesy one liners, which is literally the charme the game sold itself on.
>I'm starting to believe you haven't actually played any game you meme about and just looked up wikipedia pages or 5min youtube vids to make your shitty, overgeneralized images.
Judging by the fact that you have been unable to come up with a single counter-argument, I'm guessing it's you who haven't played either game.
Sure, JA2 (military turn-based tactics) plays different from Baldur's Gate (fantasy real time with pause tactics) but what does that have to do with anything? By that logic, Baldur's Gate would cease to be an RPG if it had JA2's combat system.
Again, JA2 is fundamentally different from other SRPGS because there is a fully interactible open world. You visit towns and talk to npcs, do side quests, recruit characters you encounters in the world, buy stuff from stores, etc.
>>more rpg elements than any jrpg in existence
first of all this aint true,
second of all, throwing in a decision point now and then aren't "heavy" rpg elements. you can go fuck yourself you baiting faggot.
*blocks your path*
>first of all this aint true,
>character creation
>party member reputation and morale system that reacts to your choices
>non-combat skills (steath, lockpicking, detecting mines, training/teaching, etc.), something virtually non-existent in jrpgs
>non-linear open world, again practically non-existent in jrpgs
>missions can be tackled in different ways
>a complex stat system that governs your characters capabilities in numerous different areas
You are genuinely retarded
and some of you dumbies still reply to the bored WRPG guy.
Anyway, I've been playing Death end re;Quest and it's pretty fresh, you should try it if you haven't.
Fuck off back to /r/eddit you normie tier trash ass nigger. Fucking hell, why do I even come to this board anymore
If you really cannot distinguish between a squad based tactics game with literally 0 story but kill deidranna and npcs whose only role it is to give you money or weapons on your mission and a full fledged rpg based on a pen and paper system with a world and mechanics a 1000x as fleshed out with its citizens, then I'm afraid what people say about you is true.
Also, look how you try to generalize everything
>it has npcs and I buy stuff from stores!
Its almost like context is completely lost on you and you can only think in 1 and 0
Final fanrasy legend 2 is really good, certainly one of the best gameboy rpgs
Shame I don't have a ps4 or else I'd try it.
>Anyway, I've been playing Death end re;Quest and it's pretty fresh, you should try it if you haven't.
Slowly making my way through it. Last thing I got was the back to back Bad Ends in chapter 3
half of those aren't necessarily "rpg" systems you moron, and the rest is typical for tactics games.
even ffa would apply
>can solve missions in different ways
>party members have specialized skills that allow them to be send off to do side mission on their own
>you can switch your job instead of being locked into it
>you can learn skills by using equipment
>complex stat system that governs your characters capabilities in numerours different areas
get fucked
>except for the fact that most of them have a storyline to complete
This is complete nonsense. The vast majority of Suikoden characters, after they join you, only have a few generic lines of dialogue when you speak to them in your hide-out/base.
That's why JA2 handles its large cast better. The devs realized the difficulty of juggling such a large cast, so they just focused on giving them easily identifiable traits, distinctive styles of speech and fun banter.
>or the fact that they're actually good combat members that fit your team.
This is even a bigger load of bullshit. The Suikoden combat system is extremely simplistic. With six party members, you've already seen all of the combat there is to be seen. It simply boils down to picking the characters with the highest stats and ignoring everyone else. There's no build diversity here, nothing.
Not only is JA2's combat system (and non-combat systems, such as militia training and stealth) vastly more complex, but characters all demand different salaries, so you have to make a trade-off between a character's abilities and their cost. Furthermore, some party members are at odds with each other, reducing party morale or even outright refusing to work with each other.
To the people still replying to WRPG-kun:
You do realize that once you backed him into a corner, he will just fuck off and then post the very same images in another thread on another day right? He doesn't learn, or wants to actually discuss. He just wants to post his painfully generalizing images to feel better about his shit taste in games.
I liked Legends of the Dragoon when I was younger. Been a long time since I've played it though so not sure how it's aged.
>even ffa would apply
Does FFA let you wait till it's night time so that it's dark and you can do a stealth approach? Does FFA have a line of sight/fog of war system that adds a different dimension to combat? Does FFA let you split of the party at any time to have party members act individually on different maps at the same time?
Again, you are truly retarded.
I wished you could have tortured that ass more before lashing at the world. Maybe let the fucker see the horrors that his douchebaggery caused. Oersted was a good man, one that knew that what was doing wouldn't make him happy but couldn't stop himself. And who would after all the shit he had to endure?
really now dude
Man these arguments are always hilarious.
>This is complete nonsense
confirmed for not playing the game.
> The vast majority of Suikoden characters
even 1/3 of them would still be more story involvement than the literal throwaway characters in JA2 with their generic movie one liners.
>There's no build diversity here, nothing.
>he doesn't know about party combos
>he actually believes that a good set up between melee and magic characters is nothing
>he doesnt know about weapon range
lmao you're such a fucking moron this is actually fun!
I'm fairly sure he's arguing with himself most of the time.
wow, waiting til nighttime is the ultimate rpg mechanic! you heard it here first!
Oersted did nothing wrong.
I don't just want endless sequels, though.
Bad things happen to good men.
All of those are tactics mechanics and the split party thing is a JA2 novelty.
What does any of that have to do with rpg mechanics? You always do that WRPG-kun,you always get carried away because you're so butthurt at Jap games.
You should feel ashamed to use a beloved classic such as JA2 for your bullshit crusade with your shitty images.
FF was an Ultima clone
FF2 is what SaGa became
Mana was solid and square as a whole continued to produce solid non ff titles all the way up until TSW
PE1+2
CC (regardless of your opiinons on it)
FM3 and 5
Xeno 1 and 3
Romsa
Einhander
Chocobo's mystery dungeon etc etc
In an 11 year Period there are less FF titles than there were in SE's re-release release spinoff happy era.
Meanwhile most of the old guard at Square, with trickle exceptions, stayed AT Square all the way until the early 2000 just under 2 years before the merger. Square didn't become a "FF" company until the extremely financially damning year of 2000 and 2001. That same period being what led Wada ousted Sakaguchi and Suzuki took responsibility by taking a significant paycut and later being flat out replaced.
web.archive.org
Square was fine until that shitty year in 2000 and the delaying of FFX. The entire trajectory of Square can quite literally be defined by the moment Wada joined that company as CFO in 2000 jp.square-enix.com
If you're curious, while Mistwalker only actually formed at 2001 (before the merger)
Quick sidenote. What caused the "exodus" that some people didn't realize actually happened.
mmcafe.com
While that merger helped fuck everything up. Square was already FUBAR when the periods start from 2000 and going until 2006 (with some in 2007) when any of the old writers, Musicians, associates, partners, and more stopped working with the company, left to form their own like Monolith Soft, Mistwalker, (whatever the fuck Kato is working at right now)
Now, on the topic of Front Mission. 4 wasn't held back by lack of advertisement. It was held back by subpar reviews. The game literally had shelves to it, had commercials, was on toonami, had dedicated sections in PSM and more
Who said anything about "endless?"
>lmao you're such a fucking moron this is actually fun!
Do you seriously think those features somehow elevate Suikoden's combat? Weapon range, a mechanic virtually every turn-based RPG has had since 1981? So how does that add anything? You simply pick the strongest character within a certain weapon range (small, medium, or long).
The combat is still completely braindead.
>What does any of that have to do with rpg mechanics?
I already pointed out things JA2 has in common with other wrpgs, such as exploration of an open world, different ways to tackle obstacles and non-combat skills. Is it that difficult to get it through your thick skull?
I enjoyed it on my one playthrough but it really isn't a game that seems replayable, more so then other jrpgs even. Chapters like Cube's and Sunset's where you know the gimmick/twist just don't hold the same impact. The only one that has real replayability is Oboro's as you can do challenge runs such as all 100 kills or no kills.
Still,if SE ever did decide to do a sort of sequel or spiritual successor I would be interested.
>JA2 combat
>get assault rifles or smg with scopes on
>spam burst fire
>win 95% of battles easily
>shitting on TWEWY
but I can buy things from shops and equip my team with it. according to you thats the most rpg mechanic evar!!
also, can you debuff your enemies in ja2? nah I didnt think so.. does any combat involve more than just shooting your enemies to death and actually require a carefull arragenemnt of buffs and debuffs by carefully selected party members with appropriate skills as well as positional combo attacks that require characters to be placed on certain tiles?
nuh huh.
go pew pew your enemies to death, the big boys are talking here
none of the things you just listed are rpg mechanics, besides the second one and these days you even find that in shooters or puzzle games(hitman) is hitman an rpg?
>also, can you debuff your enemies in ja2? nah I didnt think so..
You can. Heck, despite being a realistic military sim, it has more interesting debuff options than Suikoden, e.g. like a cloud of tear glass that expands each turn and suffocates enemies within it.
>tfw two of your favorite games, Suikoden 2 and JA2 get violated by the biggest shitposter on this board
It feels really bad....
Also for a list of my top 5 jrpg in no particular order:
>Suikoden 2
>Chrono Cross
>Terranigma
>Lunar: SSS
>SJ
thats not a debuff, thats a weapon you idiot.
>SJ
my man
he's got nothing on MaZe
Grenades are also fucking worthless due to their ap cost why knock out an enemy when you could have just shot him several times in the face?
>thats not a debuff, thats a weapon you idiot.
It debuffs enemies, so yes, it's a debuff.

>muh R*ddit
Go back there if you want to bitch about it so much, fag.
>Golden Zoom
It's older than Mother 3, though.
But I don't care about Golden Sun. I do, however, care about shitting on Mother 3.
It's a bad game people prop up because it never got an official translation so it's like an epic secret club for people that have played it.
G I G A B R A I N JRPG
I fucking swear to god you people are some of the most worthless mongrels out there. I can not even begin to begin to comprehend how shit your fucking taste is, like holy fucking shit. People like you are what genuinely make me loose faith in this world. I would tell you to kill yourself, but you're probably too fucking stupid to even load a gun. And even if you did load the gun, you';d be so smug about accomplishing a basic fucking task that you wouldn't even want to kill yourself anymore. I would kill myself, but that would end up lowering the total IQ in the world because fucking mongoloids like you would still be alive. If I knew your address I would fucking eliminate your entire fucking gene pool for even daring to shit out some sub bacterial tier brainlet like you. It surprises me that you even know how to breathe, let alone turn on a fucking computer. Every day you breath brings shame on your entire family. I would force you to drink bleach, but I'm not sure you're even smart enough to know how to swallow. You probably survive off of an IV drip because you're too stupid to even accomplish basic bodily functions.
Nice blogpost.
So is Wizardry not an RPG? A game can only be an RPG if it has a strong story focus? That's utterly absurd.
Again, JA2 has an explorable world with towns to visit, npcs to chat to and side quests to do. It does have a story. Why do you keep ignoring this?
>>it has npcs and I buy stuff from stores!
What SRPG has explorable non-combat environments?
I loved this game but never got very far. It doesn't work on the SNES classic either, pisses me off.
Fucking actually gas yourself. If I met you in real life I would shoot you fucking dead in the head. Not because I want to give you a quick death, but because I'm almost 100% sure you're lacking the mental capacity to even feel pain. A crab can probably feel more emotions than you, you worthless sack of filth. The only way you got shat out is if your mother was raped for not paying her crystal meth bill.
Now, now user. No need to get all worked up.
I am going to systematically bomb all internet servers just to make sure I know you never post online again.
Eh.
JA2 has no memorable characters you liar, last time I asked you yo post the Suikoden equivalent in JA 2 and you didn't cause you played neither of those games lmao.
Hey, buddy, vector projecting much? Nobody gives a digit about your pathetic little sequence of rants that sums to nothing of value.
Based and zettapilled
second correct post ITT so far.
>JA2 has no memorable characters you liar
>blocks your path
hahahahahahah I'm gonna post a reply to myself to make it seem like people are agreeing with you. You're mere existence makes me want to drown in my own vomit. You worthless obese fucking mongrel. These are not rants. They are the postings of someone with an actual IQ and education who is far beyond the simple postings of stupid "chan-memes". I'm sorry that you're too fucking stupid to comprehend what I'm saying, but it doesn't surprise me that you can't.
what about labyrinth of touhou 1 & 2?
>reply to myself
>phoneposter
Not really helping m8.
I've only played the first LoT for like 5 hours so I can't comment much on it, but I've had the most fun with gos no doubt (which I cleared fully except for V content and endurance dungeon).
>Square didn't become a "FF" company until the extremely financially damning year of 2000 and 2001
Square was already a FF company starting with the SNES games, hell it was already beginning to show its bad habit by rebranding the GB SaGa games into FF games.
All those games you mentioned are also simply the result of older games taking a lot less time to be made in their respective AAA environment than modern ones, all the while deliberately ignoring the bulk of games they produced after the merger, including the more successful properties that are still produced to this day like Lord of Vermilion or Kingdom Hearts, this is an incredibly dishonest argument and smells of the usual Sakaguchi apologism on top of it all.
Good but they aren't contenders for top JRPG of all time at all. Genius of Sappheiros is seriously the JRPG with the most deep gameplay you can play on PC, and it was made by a couple of japs on their free time instead of an actual studio.
dropped after a few hours, this game is total shit and I played smt 1
i hope this makes me as hard as Secret of Mana did
Keep in mind that it's really fucking hard and you have to level and equip every character, SPECIALLY the blue mage.
i love borderline unfair games, so you make me want to play it even more
You'll love it then, every boss fight is a challenge. I'll give you some advice: check out the wiki to see how to unlock the "hidden" characters at the start of the game because there's no way to learn how to unlock them in-game and you are supposed to have them anyway.
to be frank I've neglected getting good gear and like 10 levels for my un-favorite chars until I was in front of the postgame final boss and was doing fine. The mages in particular might as well fight naked (or in a kindergartener uniform like said bluemage) and still pull their weight.
but, i got one question
can i go unga with warriors and just spam high damage moves on the early game?
getting the hidden characters makes the early game a lot easier though, and when you don't use the secret methods those characters end up joining in a regular fashion anyway.
that -MIGHT- perhaps work until you face pic related. After that welcome to hell. (literally)
I was seriously hoping they made this guy in 3D
fuck I'm playing this right now and it's so damn fun
>Neku and crew get full on 3D models in DDD
>can’t even get them as party members
>Based mathman isn’t even a secret boss or something
I’ll never not be mad.
Not the best JRPG but a comfy jrpg about being a magical girl
youtube.com
>inb4 Nomura puts him in KH4 with this as his boss theme
I enjoyed it and I also loved SMT 1
Sho memes will never get old.
youtu.be
Yeah, we had to get those shit ass dream eaters instead. Really telling as Riku fights with you in the opening bit. That aside though Sho KIND of makes an appearance(and use that term very loosely)...as the name of an opponent in Flick Rush
Is it any decent?
Soundtrack is great
Story is okay, but it's really something you'd only enjoy you were looking for an episodic anime about magical girls.
There's disappointing yuri bait in parts
censorship
The biggest let down is how easy the combat is even on hardmode.
Get it if you are into magical girls and there's a big sale on it. otherwise you can safely wait for sequel and hope gust does a better job.
It's good but not great, it feels like they have the blueprints for a good idea and just didn't have the execution down.
I dunno, man. Actraiser, Actraiser 2, Soul Blazer, and Illusion of Gaia all managed to get released, and they're pretty similar with the whole religious themes.
And I also don't remember a single Castlevania game where the Cross subweapon was replaced with an axe. Unless you're not talking about Castlevania, but what other games had a cross as a subweapon?
Here’s the real best JRPG
