if it's not, then it's probably the most basic and bareboned story I've experienced in a game

Bad bait. The series invented the barebones old-school RPG story and that's exactly what it wants to be and why people like it.

Sylvando is best character unironically

Dragon Quest is 100% unironic, its story charming in its simplicity. Dragon Quest is the small home town of JRPGs that does it's own simple thing that's fun to go back to.
The monty python tongue-in-cheek JRPG of the generation is probably Xenoblade 2.

it is. dragon quest has always had a medieval setting but the writting is very modern. like the way yangus befriends the hero in 8 or the fact that the chosen one was your son and not you in 5 or the way the king 3 crowns you so he can go gambling. this is particularly bland because it turns out is just a fairytale from a children´s book.

It's supposed to be classic and untainted by modern jrpgs

That's infinitely more interesting than XI
At some points it seemed like the game is self aware / self ridiculing but that never really went anywhere

Name one thing about this game's story you couldn't see coming the moment you started playing.
The whole premise was established in the first hour or so, and it was never expanded upon whatsoever.
