Let's settle this once and for all: What is the best RPG of ALL TIME?

Great combat
Interesting exploration
Well-written story

What's the one that got it all?

> Chrono Trigger, Valkyrie Profile, Final Fantasy VI, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Vagrant Story, MOTHER 3, Trails in the Sky Duology
One of these

>all JRPGs

one post in, already looking for trouble

> WRPG Kun
Oh, thanks for letting us know ahead of time, now everyone can ignore this thread

SMT3: Nocturne

arcanum

>What's the one that got it all?
No RPG like that.

user, he said great combat.

DnD

Quite honestly, Icewind Dale.

If i wanna see a blonde twink handling big weapons I go to /gif/

Shin Megami Tensei IV

I am playing IWD2 atm
How is the enhanced edition for IWD1?

>inb4 beamdog is guilty of several...

Why do the azn like teenager protagonists so much. The soldiers of Strange Journey were so great compared to their usual shit. 2 and 4 get a honorable mention since at least the teenagers were not high school students.

Dragon's Dogma is my personal favorite.

Hmmm this is tough. But i want to say the Y's Series.

Dark Souls

Warcraft 3

You generally don't play RPGs for the combat, but rather for the story and immersion, no?

Id say no classic RPG has all 3 elements, combat usually sucks.

You're an idiot, unless you're talking specifically about the Rexxar campaign, then you have a point.

I agree with you on the combat, I generally play RPGs for the roleplaying aspect, but if the game has good combat it's usually a boon. And with Gothic I'd agree that it definitely has better combat that most of other RPGs, especially the ones that came out around the same time I'm looking at you, Morrowind

>well written story
Every game fails automatically.

Planescape: Torment

Can you provide an example of what you consider to be a well written story, and why it is so?

>Trails in the Sky Duology
I thought there were three of those.

I've been playing a lot of Kenshi, and good god is it the best rpg ever.

What other rpg lets me play as a slaver?

>want to play an evil character
>lmao dude wut r u stupid u gotta play a good character to get the evil rewards dum dum
>spend a ton of money unlocking all of the good rewards just so i can actually be eligible for any of the evil rewards
if not for the unlimited money exploit it would have been torture.

there's a lot of attention to detail in the mechanics and the pawn system has it's own depth that can end up surprising you in memorable ways.
the classes are a lot of fun to play as well and it feels really good to pull off abilities.

Xenogears is already holding that tit-
retard

Skyrim

this

It's not a perfect game by any means, but there's no other game that evokes that traditional fantasy feeling of action and adventure for me quite like it. The combat is a lot of fun (it's real time action as opposed to turn based or real time with pause), the 9 classes offer a variety of different play styles, and the Pawn system (your AI party members) is pretty deep since they can learn based on how you play or train them. The story isn't super complicated but there's enough lore to keep you interested in the main quest which is essentially "slay the dragon." it's a bit more complicated than that. The world is small but there are interesting things to discover in most corners and I personally found a lot of satisfaction in memorizing the details such as where certain enemies spawn and where to find all the chests.

If you do pick up the game and end up liking it though, do yourself a favor and DON'T look up anything about the planned or cut content that never saw the light of day. The game is a gem, but an unpolished one, and knowing what could've been hurts me deeply.

Gothic
Gothic 2
Ultima 6
Ultima 7
Ultima Underworld
Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines
Deus Ex
Planescape Torment

Those are the best. Pick one of them.

Cope

> All Literal who boomer garbage that nobody ever talks about except Deus Ex
YIKES

This is a person who has zero good opinions and objectively makes the world a worse place for being in it.

Fuck I love Gothic 1 and II so fucking much and no game has been able to deliver that same experience.

>Great combat
>Interesting exploration
>Well-written story
none of these are important for an RPG, especially the first 2.

>RPGs are story and ONLY story

You're a fucking spasto-retard m80-o

> Baldur's Gate 2
> Diablo 2
> Fallout 1
> SMT3 Nocturne
> Chrono Trigger
If you ask me, these? They are especially nice since all of them manage to look good despite the time that passed. All you need are some HD patches or emulation settings.

where's might and magic and wiz

xenogears would be holding that tile if it was fucking finished

he probably means that there is no video game in history that ever matched the writing of big boy books like Don Quixote or to kill a mocking bird

What do you mean?
