I remember being really surprised when I got Emerald for Christmas one year, I was like 9 or 10 and at that point I had no idea that Pokemon had video games, I thought it was just a show.

I also caught a shiny Paras in FRLG later, but I was gullible enough to trade it for a shiny Starmie once gen 4 came around. The only thing objectively worse about Emerald is the Pokemon League Champion change. idk who the fuck thought it would be a good idea to replace Steven with Wallace. Wallace was a great final gym leader too and was replaced by a fucking guy named Juan.

Gen 3 was the still the age when you wouldnt know 100% of the pokemon going into it.
I surely didn't know about Rayquaza going into the game so when I found that fucker at the top of sky pillar the first time I thought I was losing my goddamn mind. I miss that feeling. There are no secrets anymore.

From memory, the absolute major difference in Pokémon Emerald is the Battle Frontier in the post game. Some people consider it the best postgame in any Pokémon game ever. Further differences I remember from Ruby and Sapphire:

Gen 3 plenty of sprites were still jank
Gen 4 was when GF finally was able to make highly accurate and consistent sprites
To this day Gen 4 sprites are still perhaps the most accurate to the official artwork
Gen 5 just reused most of those sprites but with the added full animation
many of the 3D models in gen 6/7 are a step backwards much like those games themselves

my first shiny was a floatzel in victory road in diamond. Didn't give a shit because I hated that mon's design at the time. The 2nd wild one I ever got was a electrike in ruby outside of slateport and then basically used as my main mon throughout the entire game, which is easy to do in those games bc of all the water. Ended up clutching the champ battle w/ 1hp left iirc, I think I might still have a pic of it on my phone. I think I still have it sitting in a diamond cartridge somewhere in my room back home

I'm 29 and my favorite games are probably Platinum and BW2. I did enjoy USUM but the series has gone backwards in a lot of ways since gen 5, rather than focusing on improvements and filling the games with content.

Waterfall is a HM. A hidden machine. It cannot be deleted because it's a move to help you traverse the overworld. This is done because if you use surf to get somewhere, for example, hop off and then delete surf you're fucked. They made HM moves unforgettable unless you go to a specific guy who can make your pokemon forget the move.

My Espeon and Umbreon were level 80-ish. I was trying to do the battle-mountain thing when I stopped playing. I was nine when it came out. I probably went back to playing smash after getting bored or something. But I never finished the mountain.

Gen 7 made getting the shiny charm easy. Only need to do the regional dex at which point you can s.o.s chain and get a shiny in 30 minutes. Shame Mew is the only syncer that can learn false swipe.

As an added bonus, the plot in AS makes a little more sense. Archie wants to use Kyogre to bring a new beginning to the world, but soon realizes that for there to be a new beginning there must be an end. Which, in this case, is Kyogre fucking killing everyone and resetting the world to the point where it was untouched by humanity.

In OR, Maxie wants to bring an end to the world, but makes the horrid realization that for there to be an end to the world, the world must end. AS was clearly the 'main' version when it came to writing ORAS's story.

The whole point of the city was that it's directly in the middle of Hoenn and is supposed to serve as a quick junction or intersection for you to pass through when traveling the region. Having it be a big mall with a bunch of doorways you have to go through defeats the purpose of that.

ORAS was horrible fampai. Gen 3 is my favorite and they shit all over it. They removed any semblance of a challenge and just handed you the legendaries halfway through the game. You didn't have to earn any of it. It was so mind-numbingly easy that it didn't even feel like playing a game.

I'm of a similar opinion except I took a hiatus four generations 4, 5 and part of 6. But I have been working backwards and I noticed a trend where Pokemon wants to be more story-based. It's the only reason I can think of to where they created an interdimensional dragon that feeds on light and travel through wormholes as a predator. That's a final fantasy villain. There's a lot more talking and trying to characterize people. Which on paper I'm fine with. I don't think the characters should be experience buckets that talk sometimes. But I also think Pokemon is trying to be something that it's not. With Team Rocket no one was trying to threaten the world, they were just a bunch of crooks trying to steal people's pets. In X & Y it's basically the plot of Kingsman. But at the same time you're on a whimsical adventure with critters. There's a disconnect somewhere in there and while game freak is experimenting I feel like the games are suffering for it.

Shitty chibi 3D models are a dime a dozen, good sprite work is rare. I would have rather they put the extra budget into making nicer sprite work than going 3D which basically did nothing for the games.

I understand why gamefreak switch to 3D models. But the Sprites were a labor of love. Anyone who takes the time to draw 400 something Sprites in addition to whatever new 100 additions isn't doing it because they are a soulless corporation. They might belong to a soulless Corporation but the person making that decision and the guy making that happen are doing it because they like what they do. But I guess that gets tiring eventually so now we have future-proofed models that we can see again and again

the flying addition is nice though all it really amounts to is being able to fly above hoenn. It makes it so you don't have to use a fly hm slave and gives you a broken mega lati.
It does lead to a kino post game where you can fight almost all the legendaries iirc
