Zelos is just an inferior Kratos. Attacks are shorter range, has a less relevant backstory for the main character and the story generally, and doesn't have a voice that makes women wet like Kratos does.

Kratos is objectively the superior choice.

Zelos' entire arc is tragedy, he literally wants to die at the end. It's not great by any means, considering it's the non-canon, I.E. the underwritten route, but at least somebody gets what they want and has a conclusion.
The entire fake-betrayal orchestrated by Kratos is almost as lazy as Kain's "betrayal" in FFIV. These stupid nips can't write for shit.

The final solo fight between him and Lloyd would be so much better if you couldn't use items, hence why I decline to use items in that fight entirely.

Jesus Christ, why is this game so cringy? The character designs, the plot... The gameplay isn't even as fun as I remember.

Raine actually has one of the quicker melee chains in the game and if playing on the gamecube version has the ability to use spellcanceling for many chained hits on anything that doesn't go overlimit.
She also has phenominal equipment options that can make her immune to almost every non physical attack in the game at once. It's not that unbelievable that someone can trash endgame bosses when she doesn't take damage from all their flashy shit.

Abyss is the best. Symphonia will have a special place in my heart but I can't say its better.

Guy is the best sword user, Jade is the best magic user

Can't even remember the plot of Symphonia at all. All I remember is that that dude was the boss of the end of disk 1 or something like that and he was da and you could get him in your party but he kinda sucked.

And Colette was an angel or something and was dying because of some dumb sacrifice crap or something. And then you went to another world.

And everything in the game was trivial if you used that item that made all damage in a fight be halved.

Maybe I should replay it.

Hilariously enough, they start at level like 20 or 30 when you first meet them - depending on when you meet them - and they have their shitty equipment.
Come the point when they all join back up they've reached level 50 and they have their end-game equipment as if they just put it away in their homes until they needed it.

Also the Derris Emblem being on any of them for whatever reason causing them to turn to stone was retarded. At the very least, Lloyd should have not been effected by it because he has the fucking ETERNAL SWORD.
Symphonia 2 reeks of them looking at what is currently in the game and then trying to retcon a bigger bad and a bigger problem into all the old areas.

It's funny because the premise of the world being fucked up because of the world regeneration at the end of Symphonia 1 is a really interesting idea, especially since Tethe'alla and Sylvarant thought of waging war over new territory.

The costumes that were DLC in the PS3 version of Vesperia are automatically in your game the second you boot up Definitive Edition; there's no need to download them, just check your inventory.

The costumes that you can download for free are actually just some of the in-game costumes you get from sidequests. Some, mind you, not all of them. So you'd still have to do certain sidequests to get some of the in-game costumes anyway, you'd just be getting a couple for each character much earlier.

The Chloe costume is obtained from completing the 200 melee fight as Estelle.

What went wrong with Tales of Series, anons ?

But on a broader level--the combining of Team Destiny and Team Symphonia seemed to do no one any favors, especially when Baba was at the helm up to his shenanigans. Then you had stuff like Xillia being rushed out and it definitely being felt.

I loved Legendia, but I've always acknowledged it was rough around the edges. Of the games not given a remake yet that aren't named "Tempest", I'd say Legendia deserves one the most. I'd like to see everything further refined.

Crestoria is such a weird thing. They claimed it was supposed to be a proper Tales game, but then reveal it has turn-based combat, and then later reveal it's also still somehow a crossover game rather than being a 100% original setting like it was being pitched as.

So I haven't played Symphonia yet, but I want to, which version do I choose? Is the PC version good? I've heard some bad things about it, but that was back when it was released. Did they fix it or was it never bad in the first place?

It's a bit buggy but you can install certain fixes that'll help out.

If you have a semi-decent PC you can also have mods that make the game look a lot better.

And if you don't want to go through all of that just get it on console if that's available to you.

That's wrong, you can beat Kratos the first time you face him. You get an extra cutscene where Yggdrasil appears and you fight him. THAT battle is unwinnable, and if you somehow managed to get the upper hand, the game ends the fight anyway.

You can beat him, but you need to be like 25-35 levels over where you'd normally be in the game. I only ever bothered to do it after getting 10x xp in the grade store and it was still a slog to fight mithos

The bonus dungeon was especially weird since it contained plot-relevant information that helped shed light on some of the stuff that had been going on, but you could only see it after going through the game's bonus dungeon which you could only do after you already beat the game.

Then it decided to veer into a Freaky Friday hot spring scene to cap it all off. Between things like that and Jude being turned into a penguin, Berseria could get really weird sometimes.

you didn't, they eased up a lot of the sidequests. After the final boss, go to Danghrest. There should be a scene with an earthquake, then south of the hotsprings there should be the ex dungeon. You can do it without going to the town in Phaeroh's crag

The main problem is being unprepared for that and expect another fight after beating the other angel.It also doesnt help how you lose THE one character carrying you through that journey(Kratos) and Collete is out, so you are stuck to Genis that is pretty shit at that point on the 1st playthrough, a Sheena that barely helps and the only thing left is Lloyd vs Kratos with Raine on the back. Whenever Kratos goes overlimit means him spamming magic like a madman and fast which means "bye Raine"
I remember the first time fighting him barely having items to keep myself alive, playing Hard difficulty didnt help either. Mania mode on the 2nd playthrough is still annoying unless you waste time on grinding a lot or keep the stuff through the grade shop(like ex-skill and skills)

Well, let's see.

The 2D Tales games, mostly by Team Destiny, kept mixing things up with their combat more than the 3D ones that Team Symphonia did. Symphonia, Abyss and Vesperia played pretty similarly, having the same foundation to them even if each new game expounded on it. Vesperia plays and feels like a very refined Symphonia, if you wanted to oversimplify things.

Meanwhile, Graces, a 3D game made by Team Destiny, was doing the usual thing of mixing things up. The arte tree system was introduced here, but only for normal attacks. It also introduced CC, the thing that replaced TP when gauging how many attacks you could do in a single combo. Furthermore, around this point the series had started to move away from world maps, going for interconnected areas instead, and the amount of content you could get and do in-game wasn't quite as high as some of the previous games--coinciding with the rise of DLC.

Xillia would go on to take some things from Graces, like not having a world map or the CC gauge (now called AC) being carried over. But it also was a rushed product with Bamco forcing a time crunch for it, which led to them cutting a lot of corners. It had a lot less side content.

Team Destiny and Team Syphonia were folded into one team again. We used to get multiple games one after another when we had multiple teams working on seperate projects, but now side games are all regulated to phone stuff, and the mainline titles have been things like Zestiria and Berseria. Before, when we got Team Symphonia games that still felt sort of similar, we'd usually have, at the very least, a Team Destiny game to compliment it with a different style and structure. That's not really the case anymore.

I do know the series general trajectory, I was referring more to the old adage of "How can the newer games be that much better if they basically do the same thing (until Zestiria)?" Oh, well, like I said, the different development teams meant that games played radically different from each other at times. Take a look at Hearts on the DS, it played so much different than most other Tales games. Then its remake on the Vita, Hearts R, also played entirely different and did a lot of stuff different than many other 3D Tales with its heavy emphasis on aerial combat for every character.
