FFXIII got 2 sequels, and those sequels gave us one the best combat systems (LR) and OST (XIII-2) in the series. Like it or not, those 3 games have a story.

I only played the base version of FFXV (time played was Dec 2016 to Feb 2017) and I found it to be very mediocre.

I've not played KH3 but FFXV certainly has some redeeming qualities. However, I'm not sure that it was pretty good considering that the core combat was pretty shitty overall and the story was not conveyed well in game because they decided ahead of time you would need a movie, an anime, and 7 dlc's to get the full picture. Despite that, the character interaction was pretty good at points and there were some great things in there. The monster design was pretty nice and I loved the sewer dungeon as a concept, it follows so naturally from an urban fantasy setting that I'm amazed I dont see something like it all the time

The Datalogs were the worst part of XIII's story and lore since pushing all the context to just plain text made the story make no fucking sense. This is combined with its dogshit gameplay and completely one-dimensional and unlikable cast of characters. These are problems attributed to the developers and the director Toriyama.

I agree that that's a huge fucking problem, but even with Kingsglaive and the Episodes taking chunks out of the story you can still figure out what's going on. The combat is one thing but I also mean the world exploration, the way cities work and how eating food and all that makes the world feel more alive than previous FF's. I think most of those games are hold button to win games so I don't really see the distinction you see in these titles and seeing as most people praise the combat in Nier and it's even easier than this game I don't see why this would get people riled. I would rather have an easy game that makes combat trivial but has other engaging aspects of it albeit XV didn't have enough of that, than a combat system that is complex and clunky and gets in the way. In my opinion most 3D RPGs have been a disappointment in combat both eastern and western so I don't think it's a big knock against this game for it to be simplistic in this way.

XV took only a single step in the right direction by ditching complete linearity. In saying that, the world map was terrible, and so was the linear second half. Just a mess of a game that tried to be too many thinks and succeeded at none.

Ignis is the only one that's even remotely likeable. Gladio has no personality outside of being a musclehead, and his only character development is in his DLC where he swears to support Noctis no matter what for the rest of his days, which then goes out the window after Ignis gets blinded and Gladio starts being a cunt for the next chapter. Prompto has a bit more depth to him with how he's a tryhard on purpose because he's scared of everyone not liking him, but it doesn't really help that he's still fucking annoying as shit, and the twist that he's a clone felt completely pointless. Noctis himself is just a shitty brat for most of the game and he has no real development over time, he just suddenly becomes a completely different person after coming out of stasis.

I don't like FFX at all but it least it's colorful early 2000's anime style managed to stay mostly consistent throughout the game and managed to incorporate previous elements of the series in a way that wasn't as jarring as 15's. I don't think we disagree on much but you can stay mad if you want.

not really. the old turn-based system worked fine, and previous spinoffs had done action-based combat much better. ffxv pretty much removed all semblance of gameplay by letting you hold o to win and even stopping the game to let you use a healing item in the unlikely event you ever got down to 0 hp.
nobody's expecting ff's combat to ever have the complexity of smt or twewy. it's an entry-level, mainstream series. but for all their faults, the previous games at least felt like actual games. ffxv is a "cinematic experience."

I've never lived alone before so it was a bit weird at first not having people around when I wasnt at work, it helped me feel less spooked. I was unimpressed at the start of the game but the fight with Leviathan was some of the coolest shit I've ever seen in a game, took the game to a 7/10 for me just for that alone. The music and combat animations for that segment were kino.

I haven't finished it, I just got to the part where you get the boat. Overall I've actually really enjoyed it, at first I was a bit skeptical, mostly because of the opem world aspect, but I actually think it handles it really well and isn't as empty and barren as people make it out to be. I was especially surprised by the variety of dungeons and classic final fantasy enemies present in the game, seeing a lot of them in current gen graphics was pretty cool. I think most people agree that though that its biggest flaw is that it was released as an unfinished game, even if that was somewhat patched up with dlc and stuff it's a pretty shirty move on SE's part. I've also heard the story isn't too hot, but I'm reserving my judgement on that until I finish the game.

Not gonna lie, one of my favorite things in vidya is just cruising around in FFXV while listening to older FF tracks, though that's mostly because just looking around at the landscape while fueling my nostalgia for the older games is really something special.

No, sorry. To me the JRPG genre in general is about the story and the uniqueness of the world and the characters presented (and offcourse the art design assosiated to this aspects). FF used to be the absolutely best in the industry in both regards and i am not willing to accept less from them nor to cut them some slack because of their past glory. If anything i always hold the bar high for FF (and i am constantly dissapointed. I´ve been dissapointed on them for the last 15 years or so).

To me it doesn´t matter if the game is turn based, ATB or ARPG as long as they find some mechanics that work. Sadly the only time SE has nailed a good combination of their menu system with real time action has been KH2.
That aside XV story is just terrible in every sense of the word. The narration and pacing are fucked up by the way they´ve designed the world map and that system of going to tombs almost randomly (heck at least half are not even story related).
Going around on fetch quests and having relationship talks with my party is my idea of a WRPG not of a FF. If i wanted a WRPG i would play one. (I sometimes do, there are some great ones, that´s not the point)
Furthermore the art design of the world is just lame. That "this is a fantasy based on reality" bullshit was just a terrible idea, as it was making the party a posse. I want to meet unlikely companions from different places with different motives to join me in my adventure.
So even if the battle system was not subpar as a JRPG FF XV gets every single thing that usually hooks me on JRPGs wrong. That goes beyond flawed for me.
Comparatively the first Ni no Kuni and Dragon Quest XI hooked me instantly as JRPGs. Both those games are proof that there is nothing wrong with the classic system. It still delivers just fine.

XV has manual dodge, dodge cancels, shield blocks, dash dodge, parries and phase, not auto dodge, phase isn't auto its the same shit as using a shield in any game with one

I honestly enjoyed XIII more. As a huge FFfag, XV's wannabe action combat is fucking awful and holding down the button to attack sucks dick. Barring the MMOs like XIV or weird spinoffs, FF is best when turn-based. No other franchise has the sheer breadth of possibilities that the Job System presents in a turn-based game. XIII wasn't good, don't get me wrong, but at the core it didn't feel like it was trying to distance itself from FF.

I don't know what the recommended level was meant to be but when I did this fight I was around level 65 and I literally just held O the entire time and destroyed Ardyn with no effort. The next phase where flying around was one where I actually had to heal myself twice.

13 was passable. It had a good battle system, a perfectly reasonable evolution of the ATB system. This just got ignored though because of the games other flaws. 15 on the other hand is almost entirely dogshit. It's the only time a game has honestly made me feel offended. The only good thing in the entire game is how it looks. Everything else is pure shit.
