There are tons of good mobile games, actually. A diablo port is really on the bottom of the list considering it probably does not take that much into account of the smartphone capabilities and is just something to grind and show epic numbers.

That sounds invariably the case, considering lately the only games who seem good seem to come from studios with at least humane practices for their employees and some sort of artistic vision. Not considering smaller indies.

Video games are no longer manged by people who love video games. They are owned by people who love making money. The original developers who made all the games you hold dearly are now loaded for life, have sold out to richer people and no longer actually contribute their talent to the production of quality games. AAA companies have just become another job where people who love video games will work at but really have no direct say in what happens. The big decisions are made by people who just want to make the biggest dollar, and that usually means appealing to the biggest audience at the cost of bad content and outright lies to the consumer.

Easiest way to tell this is to look at game reviews. Even the absolute bottom of the barrel, barely functioning garbage like Mass Effect 3 or ME:A or Anthem still gets scores in the range of 60-80. That implies that they're not as good as some other games, but definitely still worth playing. Only in extremely rare occasions to games get raked over the coals and given scores below a 50. Sonic 2006 is quite possibly one of the worst big budget commercial releases, still has a 46 on Metacritic. A 4.6/10 implies something just below average. It's because every "professional" game critic is a bought and paid for industry whore. Look up the Rotten Tomatoes score for a movie that critics hated. You'll see a 20% on average, with plenty of bad or forgettable movies sitting at single digits or even lower. When Roger Ebert wants to tell you a movie is bad, he tells you. When IGN does it, they have to damn with faint praise because anything more would put them out of business.

Without professional criticism to inform studios as to what works and what doesn't, the medium can never move forward. Instead, it just regresses further and further into the safe, the familiar, the "seen-it", and worst of all, the financially exploitative. Critics saw fit to award GOTY 2018 to God of War, a by-the-numbers exercise in box ticking. Even the much praised story was something that's been in dozens of high profile games before. The message is loud and clear. If you want to succeed, critically or financially, make your game like everything else. And when games these days are practically a graphical/open world size arms race that threatens to bankrupt them all, is it any wonder that studios are choosing to instead turn their IPs into mobile games?

To continue, mobile games make all the financial sense in the world. A mobile game might cost half a million dollars to throw together, but they're also the most profitable games that currently exist. One of the most successful games ever made, Street Fighter 2, made an inflation adjusted 4+ billion USD in quarters. SF2 was, for the time, the cutting edge of graphics, experimented wildly with itself, and created an entirely new genre. Needless to say, this is lightning in a bottle and would be extremely risky/expensive to recreate today. However, games like Fate/Grand Order and other mobile games are making billions, and they're safe and low quality even for their own platforms. So it makes too much business sense for companies to not make mobile games. Even if every mobile game crashes and burns horribly, the company isn't losing that much money. Plus, if it succeeds, they make money hand over fist.

The really sickening thing is that the only reason regular games still exist is that they're trying to figure out how to implement the mobile game features into them. So many games now aren't designed to be fun, they're designed to be addictive. All of them have that tell-tale RPG loop of exploring, leveling up, crafting, quantification, etc etc, that can be oh-so-easily turned into a premium live service. Games like Assassin's Creed Oddyssey are the prototypes. Sneaking in pay2notgrind bullshit into full priced games to see how much they can get away with. Because that's the future, because that's what makes the most money, because that's what takes the least effort. Why bother trying to cultivate fans with genuine passion for your games when you can instead cultivate addicts that literally pay you to not play your games.
