7 is the best for me since it's the first one with an official PC version. This game is a pure beauty with tweaked effects and jacked up draw distance in UHD. Can't wait to replace my 1080 with a truly insane graphics card, apparently there are setups that run this game in 4k or ultrawide at 200 fps.

Ace combat 4 was the first game in ps2 and most likely built the gameplay foundation for a solid game, they had to sacrifice story, dialogue, characters, planes, and cool missions (even though stonehenge and the last one is pretty good),

the game served as a foundation for the crazy plots of 5 and 0, without 4 you wouldn't even have 5 or 0

It's real nice and consistent, it breaks from the main theme enough (with bangers, generally), and the main theme has the best crescendo in the series.

0 has Zero which is an incredible track, alongside the credit theme. I think 7 is their best work as a complete product.

No I agree too. Like I remember the big ones from the other games obviously, Agnus Dei, The Unsung War, Zero, Liberation of Gracemeria, and then a few select tracks from each game. Watch your radar, they literally just trail behind you. I've seen them get kills before but it's almost always a 3v1 on their part because they do almost no damage.

It shows in the slightly off kilter storyline and characters. I do believe Count, Avril, Cosette etc. we're suppose to get more character growth.

Its why, despite the cheesy story (that I actually didn't mind at all but it bothers some people) I liked AC5 a lot. Having a consistent squad was nice.

It was also kinda a cool change of pace that rather than just the PC being recognized as the ultimate ace the entire Ghosts of Razgriz were at the same time so it was about your squadron and not just you.

He actually seems relieved when your innocence comes to light, and says he knew you felt different from the others.

The problem with AH is that it arbitrarily makes certain enemies invincible until you engage them in a dogfight and go through their scripted flight path to show off all the "cool" explosions and fancy action.

It's horrible from a gameplay perspective because it keeps reeling you in and stopping you from actually playing the game to look at the pretty explosions and set-pieces.

It's fine and the multiplayer modes are much better than in AC7.

6 only gets shit because the majority of AC fans are Snoyboys who are still buttmad they never played it.

I'm replaying 0 now since I've only gone Knight path on my PCSX2 save so far and I agree, it's really goddamn easy. S ranked absolutely everything so far.
Saying assault horizon legacy is better is fucking retarded though, AHL sucks, the PSX version of 2 is better. Maybe I feel that way because its painful to play action games on 3DS for my giant hands, but its the only ace combat game where i'm not hyped as fuck to play the next mission. 3D looks fucking good for the 15 mins you can play with it on before your eyes start bleeding, though.
I fucking love 6, i'd say AH is worth a pirate and a playthrough since it's still batshit but in a different, less fun way. There's a goddamn fistbump QTE. The whole game relies on 'dogfight mode' which is a load of shit, taking away the fun of chasing an enemy plane for some WOAH SO COOL cinematic moments. You're literally forced to use it. Also, the planes bleed oil, for some reason.
Still, it has some fun missions, some dumb and entertaining characters. The helicopter levels are the worst shit ever, but its still fun to see ground troops in an AC game.

Best Gameplay in the series. People shit on the story, and they are right that the cutscenes suck, but the dialogue and characters in-mission is all great.

Cut-scene story sucks in AC7 too.

Totally, but heavy scripting isn't my idea of mission variety. Ace Combat 0 has varied missions but there aren't as many sections where you're just waiting for shit to happen because it's nearly all player driven.

If it weren't for the sheer number of missions and the arcade mode I'd feel somewhat disappointed by AC5. As it stands I still feel it's pretty daunting to replay, while I could fire up ACX or AC0 any time.


Most of the mission is just flying to the descent point and the SOLG is a total sitting duck that can be taken out in a minute.

Because it's a large space of emptiness where you do nothing but listen to dialog for 2+ minutes. This kind of bullshit pops up in the very first mission (where the wait time is 3 minutes) and continues throughout the game. It's no different than when a game forces you to walk slowly listening to idle chatter. It's bad design.

The good part of AC0 is not having much timers/score missions. That i agree. But AC5 has way more variety in missions. AC7 is more heavy on timers and scores, unfortunately.

I just replayed the PS2 trilogy this week, and goddamn, does Ace Combat 4 and 5 still get me going. 5 is a little bit overestrictive at time, like the way it forces you to use certain plane types in a couple missions, and the hangar UI is just atrocious, but it's still the best story Ace Combat's ever produced, and it does one of the most important things very well, that being making the war feel grand and involved and like an actual difficult affair. 4 is not far behind in that regard, even if its story is a lot more straightforward it still serves perfectly as a plot of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, and Megalith might still be my favorite final sortie in all the games I played.
I just wish I could love Zero as much as I love these other two.

I also like the missions where not much happens since they tend to add more character to the world, like the one in 6 where you're flying through the fireworks during the victory celebration.

This is my big issue with 0. The game feels way too short for its ultimate twist, I wouldn't even care if it was just filler missions where you blow shit up with Pixy, you don't have enough time for him to grow on you before he fucks off.

JUST finished it today on PS4, what a great fucking game. I thought it was way better than 4 (Mobius felt a bit too detached from the story). Will play 0 next and order 6 in the meanwhile. So far I played AC3, ACX, ACJA (dropped it because it would crash on 12a), ACAHL+, 4 and 5. 7 is waiting half finished, I'm so glad I went back, fantastic series of games that respect your time.

Since you're pretty much a faceless protagonist anyway, it worked that the story wasn't about you. 5's missions were much better, though. 0's missions were just as good, if not better, so look forward to that. EML is absolutely terrible in SP.

Hang in there, the planes later in the game are way more agile, and complete all routes on the same save file (save at the end of one, choose download, and instead of loading a file, choose new game, and you'll start a new run on the same file). Play it for the first time a few weeks ago and I was blown away, gotta say it's a very advanced game for it's time.

The first time I got an S on that mission was when I used the PLSL. You can also pew pew the ships too.

You start at the bottom silo, which is always real. Then you go to the silo to the west of it. If it's a fake, you're on route C, so you hit only the silos marked C.
If the southwest silo is real, you hit the silo to the north, then you go to the center silo. If the center silo's a fake, you're on the A route, and so you hit the eastern silos.
If the center silo is real, you're on the B route, and you hit the northeast silo (and get the Clairvoyant medal).

Don't get me wrong, I really liked the melancholic tone throughout, but killing Yellow 4 has no impact for Mobius, just one more on the list, and finally facing and killing the whole Yellow squadron doesn't have the same build up as facing Grabacr and Ofnir in 5. While Mobius 1 is described as a legendary pilot from the start, and Blaze is called Kid until the end, Mobius is too much of blank slate (and a sub Gryphus 1 imo), the character evolution is much better in 5. But all this is highly subjective and I loved 4 too, plus I'm still on the high from 5. Project Aces watched the trench run in ep IV way too much haha

I tried pewpew'ing the ships, it worked but then I tried anti-ship missiles. I had no idea how effective they were.

One of the problems that I had with 4 is that the missions themselves didn't feel as good as the later ones. In the first battle with the Yellows, 4's death isn't even revealed until after the fact, and it wasn't even a full battle. You shoot one and it is over. Also, the story was much smaller in scope, which may have also held AC4 back. You're right that Blaze has more personal development because the story revolves more around his squad than Mobius' story. I liked the outside perspective I guess. Fleshed out the world more to me. Made it feel like your actions were impacting the story. I liked the testimonials from 0 for that reason as well.

what linked is great. Played through AC4 nigh-flawlessly, just had to double tap F9 for the sun to render properly and there was one mission or two with very minor ground glitching. Game ran smoothly and looked beautiful, and I plugged in my DS4 for the added ease of play.

Speaking of which, it's a decent port. Supports 16:9 in game and cutscenes (menus and briefings are still 4:3), runs smoothly and looks better than the original (better resolution I guess) and the control scheme is adapted to the Ps4 controller. And it has trophies (not that I care). It's not one of those shitty emulated Ps2 games, but a real port. Anyone knows if it's the same with AC4 on Xbone? That much effort makes me wonder if they aren't considering porting some of the older games to modern hardware?

I mean I just replayed all of 5 and Zero a week or two ago, but I didn't know about the no interlacing codes. Otherwise the settings are more or less the same that I ran with.

I don't want to argue with them because I don't want to turn a comfy AC thread into a shitfest, but I personally liked her. In the early mission where Bartlett gets shot down she declines role of squad lead to you despite being arguably more experienced at that point. Then she stays loyal to you throughout the entire game and generally had a good personality. Chopper and archer were also pretty based, even swordsman after he joins. Definitely the strongest wingmen cast out of the trinity.

They fixed the UI texture scaling so they actually look like vectors instead of textures. Also much higher quality on the cutscenes and audio. It's the best version of AC5.

I posted in a previous AC7 thread about where to start. I got 0 working fine on an emulator but it isn't really grabbing me right away. At what point do I start getting into the CUHRAZY story and/or gameplay?

The CUHRAZY was more in reference to story than gameplay. I had AC described to me as MGS in planes. The gameplay seems pretty tame currently though; no mission thus far has really stood out or wowed me and I'm wondering if I'm still just too early in the game or if it doesn't really step up in terms of spectacle.

I started with AC7 and while I enjoyed the game, I couldn't get into because I didn't know the previous games and couldn't follow the conflict from a geopolitical standpoint (Osea vs Erusea in Usea, who the fuck is what???) so I want back to discover the series from earlier titles, and that made me enjoy it way more. It depends how much you can dive back into older games but this my recommendation: AC3(JP), ACX, AC N3DS, AC4, AC5, AC0, AC6 and finally AC7. Check the thread, someone posted an image with a list of games to play/avoid.

0 gets crazier and crazier, you'll have a laser trying to blast you out of the sky soon enough. The story is pretty barebones though and told through people reminiscing, play 5 if you want a full on plane anime.

Ah gotcha. I'm still quite early on (but being bad at the game means I spent a long time on it anyway) so I've only visited the Round Table the first time. The most recent two missions I remember are the one where you liberate the big city with the bell ringing, and the one where you get to pick one of three approaches to a mission.

To be honest I feel that about 40% of all Ace Combat missions are completely forgettable.

Without spoiling a thing, what happens in 5 is linked to what happens in 0. If you're familiar with MGS, you know that you could play in release order or in chronological order and get a different experience of the series while playing the same games. I chose an order to see the gameplay evolve rather than going from 1995 to 2040. While MGS with planes is a good description, most games involve new characters and aren't direct or related sequels and the overall plot isn't as involved as MGS where you follow recurring characters (mostly Big Boss and Solid Snake).

I have beat it lately and it was surprisingly good, not for a 20 years
old game but just it was simply good.
Its futuristic story and set-up can stand even today, artstyle doesn't look obsolete, soundtrack is on-par with 0 and 7.

giving it the latest graphics and gameplay mechanics, it will be reborn as a 10/10 game, I think.

-You loot for all classes at once, with a 3/5 ratio in favour of your class
-Already looted weapons upgrade with subsequent doubles (better reload times, damage, range, accuracy, etc) making an upgraded weapon still usable even if you have a higher level weapon, making loadouts more polyvalent
-a bunch of other shit I can't think of right now
In short, a good game that clearly improved on it's predecessors

Frankly I was blown away by how good this game was, I agree that it would be a great game even today if you just improve gameplay and visuals.

Dashes aren't tied to melee weapons anymore, but you can only do 2 in a row at the beginning. As you get more upgrades for your Fencer, you can go up to 6-7 in a row before a short cool down IIRC. Which means you can dash, boost jump twice, dash again, fire artillery or whatever, dash back twice to regroup for instance.

That sounds fucking rad and is exactly what Fencer needed.

That's true, rain, snow, sun glare (how the fuck?), missile being actual, physical projectiles, afterburner throwing transparent pixels behind you to simulate heated air trail...and how much shit they cramed in there like briefing, replays, planes models and significant handling differences between starting planes and later ones. I can't believe that this is a Ps1 game.

I think so but my buddy is the Fencer, I'm playing Air Raider. Also normal/hard is harder now and you must complete the game in either of those difficulties to unlock hardest/inferno. They really wanted to improve and not just give us the same game, I'm really glad these games are still going strong despite their niche appeal and how technically out of date they are.

I haven't played Air Combat or AC2, but as I understand it, yes. Although AC3 is quite unique with it's setting and anime cutscenes.
