I disagree. I played Undertale for the first time a few months back, and when in with a shit attitude because of how much I've heard it sucks from Yea Forums over the years. I was pleasantly surprised with how much fun it was. Everyone always said it's a shitty earthbound clone. But the combat system is nothing like that at all. It was a mix of factors that gave it more attention than it actually deserved, since games with such poor graphics gets dismissed all the time, regardless of quality.

First of it, was toby fox already having a presence online as part of the homestuck soundtrack and doing a famous hack rom for the mother/earthbound fanbase. So the game already had a semi fanbase ready for it which you can see when the game came out and it got some attention more than any steam game that had graphics with similar quality and a lot of mother comparisons despite the game being not near as great as the series it was inspired from.

Then you have characters and an internet humor with a lot of references from our era that are appealing for a large audience.

I keep hearing people call Undertale charming but no one has ever explained how. And before you ask, yes I played the game.

I like how I have seen a lot of great criticism for this visibly flawed game and people always back pedal because they genuinely think that there isn't anyone which has sincere negative feelings towards it.

I disliked this game from launch but didn't voice anything about exactly because it wasn't anything special.
